View Full Version : Jenna's New Glasses

Jenna, my 6 year old, had to go see an optometrist today to get glasses. Our insurance only covers these very flimsy wire frames (my own pair fell apart 3 days after I got them and I had to superglue the lens back in.) We are only covered for one pair of glasses each 2 years, So I was concerned that little Jenna's glasses wouldn't be sturdy enough for the rambunctious life of a 1st grader. Thre was a kind little old man in the glasses shop, he is the one who helped me when I got my glasses a few months back. He picked out some plain wire rimmed glasses to have Jenna try on. She looked kind of sad and said "I don't like those, do you have any other colors?" So he went back and looked and found her some purple ones. (Still flimsy wire.) She liked these ones, and they looked really cute on her. He was So kind when he was speaking with her-he just reminded me of a little santa claus with his white beard and happy eyes.
I asked the gentleman if the insurance company would pay for the lenses if I could pay for the frames. I explained to him my concern for Jenna's glasses getting broken. He said he would see, and then looked at Jenna and said "You look like a pink girl to me! Let me see what I can find you!" He leaves the room for a few minutes and comes back with a pair of sturdy, hot pink plastic framed [I]Hanna Montana glasses-with little tiny rhinestones all along the top of the frames. Jenna looked SO adorable with them on!
I asked how much they were. The gentleman said "Don't worry about it. I've got it taken care of." I tried to protest a few times and he just told me not to worry. He said Jenna's glasses would be done on Tuesday (with the insurance we would have to wait 4 to 6 weeks.) Jenna started crying and said she wanted her glasses today, she just wanted to be able to see etc. I was mortified that she was upset when this guy was being so sweet. He fills out all the paperwork and says "They will be ready tomorrow." I told him he really didn't have to do all of this, I feel bad, and he just said "It's Christmas time. Sometimes Christmas comes a little early." I am SO grateful that he was sweet enough to do this for us! Tomorrow we go back for Jenna's new glasses, and on Monday she will get to wear them to school so she can see properly! :)
Wha this gentleman didn't (and still doesn't) know, is that i'm a single mom of several children, and their father just lost his job about a month and a half ago, which means I am down 700 dollars per month in child support-we are really having a hard time financially right now. His blessing was just perfectly timed!
All evening I have just been overwhelmed with emotion about how blessed I am, not just because of this, just everything in life. I feel like this little incident was just the icing on the cake. God is SOOO good!
[As a side note, I saw the exact same pair of frames hanging on the wall when we walked out of the store. The price? 128 dollars. My goodness.]

your story made me cry. i am a 32 year old man and i'm crying because of you daughter's glasses. that old man was very kind. i was thinking about how we look at children. i don't have any  but i would like to someday . when i think of these acts of kindness done for the little ones, it brings tears of joy to my eyes. i was wondering if this is how God feels for acts of kindness towards us all. i am also very encouraged to see that you can see how greatly blessed you are even in hard times. God really is sooo good. Hallelujah! thank you Jesus! i will keep you and your several children and their father in my prayers. thank you for praising God. please dont stop.

Carissa, thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this! No matter how many stories I hear, no matter how much I know it to be fact, it still makes my heart sing when a brother or sister shares the ways in which God takes care of the large and the small details of our lives.
Even in the midst of difficulties, God is good. Always!

Oh, coffeecat, you totally read my mind! I have been trying to figure out something nce I could do for this kind gentleman-my mom said I should avoid cookies because he is quite older and she said he may have diabetes... Ugh, i'm racking my brain for something I can do for him. I'm defnitely having Jenna make him a card after school but i'd love to take him a small gift to show my gratitude.

Oh Brant I know how you feel, all yesterday afternoon I was getting teary eyed on and off thinking about it, and then this song came on the radio while I was driving home last night and as I sang I was just ovewhelmed with emotion and started crying out of gratefulness. The chorus in particular just kills me, it gets to me every time.
Jeremy Riddle - Sweetly Broken
From the album Sweetly Broken
To the cross I look, to the cross I cling
Of its suffering I do drink
Of its work I do sing
For on it my Savior both bruised and crushed
Showed that God is love
And God is just
Chorus:
At the cross You beckon me
You draw me gently to my knees, and I am
Lost for words, so lost in love,
I’m sweetly broken, wholly surrendered
What a priceless gift, undeserved life
Have I been given
Through Christ crucified
You’ve called me out of death
You’ve called me into life
And I was under Your wrath
Now through the cross I’m reconciled
Chorus:
In awe of the cross I must confess
How wondrous Your redeeming love and
How great is Your faithfulness
(Crying may not have been the smartest thing to do while driving, but I couldn't help it, lol.) I had to wonder if this gentleman had grown children of his own, maybe grandchildren. Just watching Jenna look up at him with her huge brown eyes, it was like he just melted. I wonder if he has any idea how beautifully God worked through him.
Thank you so much for keeping us in your prayers, bless you!

Oh, me too Vhayes! I think that's what really got me, the glasses weren't exactly necessary, as the insurance covered a basic pair, but He just went out of His way to go that extra little mile to make my little one smile-which is huge for a first grader-glasses are so intimidating for a kid to wear at school anyways! I really feel that these are so cute that there will be no stigma involved for her when she wears them to school on Monday. In fact, she can't wait to pick them up today, she woke up and asked if we were going yet, and I told her she had to go to school first to give them time to make her glasses! LOL!
