I am deciding on a new rifle, mostly for random targets and maybe killing animals like [deer(doubtful), possum (they love my dog's food), racoons (lol little thieves), squirrels (my house has nut trees on the north side, so its constantly reunion spots for squirrels, and I ate uncle steve), Vultures (they try to kill the calves when tehy are firstborn, we don't kill them ;), byt ya)

I am looking at:

Kalaashnikov AK-47- Expensive bullets, but a good rifle all around, and holds a lot of ammo for bigger clips.

Tokarev SVT-40- About same price as the AK to buy, very good rifle for hunting, but I am also looking into a home protection rifle.

Any other suggestions/comments of other/these rifles?

Can't say whether those rifles are any good, but both seem excessive for killing squirrels. You can kill a squirrel with a single shot from an air rifle.

For home protection I'd have thought you'd want a pistol rather than a rifle. From my (limited) knowledge it seems like you're trying to do too much with a single tool.

I'm sure others with more knowledge of rifles will chime in though :)

I have a 357 Magnum pistol, but I am a rifle person, my dad is the pistol guy, and shooting a 12 guage in a house for protection would probably do more harm to the ears then the burglar could.

I was thinking the same thing. A .22 rifle would be plenty for squirrels, raccoons, possums, and any other kind of varmint. It most likely wouldn't be enough to kill a buzzard (from what I hear, they're pretty much impossible to kill), but it would at least scare them off. Anything you might use on a deer (.243, .30-06, etc...) would be overkill for just about everything else you listed. I've seen what a .243 can do to a squirrel, and it ain't pretty.

If you want a rifle for general target shooting I'd have thought you'd go for one that you can put cheaper ammo in. When I've been target shooting with a friend in the US we do most of the shooting with a .22, then save a few shells to have a bit of fun with the .44 Magnum. Sometimes we'll blow off a few shells from a shotgun, then once the shells are gone we line the spent shells up and use them as targets for the .22s

Not sure why you'd want a higher calibre rifle for general target shooting.

i would suggest a 22 mag but you added the possibility of shooting deer. This would be illegal with a rimfire rifle. So... my suggestion would be a .223 (great for all size varmits)

This is a great target rifle because of the price of the shells and it's a very flat shooter ;)

Also i have witnessed my daughter dropping deer in their tracks with her 223 :)

For the home defense, the .223 is okay but it is hard to beat the 357 mag you have, I keep a S&W .357 mag by my bed

Ammo for the AK is pretty cheap too. 7.62 x 39 is a great round, and the nice thing is you can shoot plenty of them to get accurate.

Guys who shoot big bullets that make really loud noises rarely hit much with them, as they are either too poor, or too sore to practce much. (This is not in red for any good reason, I was just happy with the sentence) :D

I would avoid the AK though, and especially the AK-74 (I guess they hope folks are dyslexic). The SKS is much cheaper then an AK-47, and you can find a good milled SKS for much less money.

If you are really going to shoot squirl, you don't want anymore then a .22 though. A .223 may have nearly the same bore, but shooting at anything in a tree is bad juju.

I would say you should look at 2 guns (more is better anyway right?) I like the Ruger 10/22. I have one I have probably run 20-30 THOUSAND rounds through... it is still a tack driver (or close enough for me), and never jams no matter what kind of cheap ammo I run through it.

You can buy a brand new Ruger 10/22 (even get fancy, and go stainless, or get the target barrel) AND get a good SKS for less money then you are going to spend on an AR right now....

Just another guys opinion.

Well, I was looking into a SKS, but I also want to get a gun that is shorter in basic length (like an AK-47). I wanted a M-4 Assault Rifle, but for one, they cost a lot.

I might buy me a lever action Winchester (size, just needs to be big enough to kill coyotes with 1 hit cause they are very common here).

I have right now these:

357 Magnum, 12 guage, 2 4-10's, 2 22' rifles (one is one shot, the other is 7 shot clip), 1 red ryder b-b gun (at 9 I was the king). We used to have a muzzle loader, but my dad sold it, I wish he had kept it to be honest, but them things make a noise, make a mess, and are just flat out poor to have unless you are a professional muzzle loader hunter. I would rather do bow hunting, cause it makes less mess.

I want to add to my armory of firepower with at least 3 guns before I join the Army, and when I do, I hope to god, that after BT I can get them to let me buy my own assault rifle, and I hope I can get my dad to send me his 357 magnum as a side-arm, but I dunno if they will let me so I just put that as a hope.

I might look into a SKS really closer, but so far I am looking at 3 WW2 rifles:

M1 Carbine (I am a lover)
Tokarev SVT-40 (purrr)
Gewehr_43 (yummy)

Deer AND Squirel with the same rifle ? It needs to be either very big squirels and very small deer, or the other way around to be really practical I guess. ;)

For home defence nothing comes close to a pump-action 12 gauge, espesially close quarter, and you can of course mix up the shot sizes for various aplications.
I would love to have an AR-15, but unfortinatly the law in my country does not allow me this.

For handguns : If it does'nt say Glock on the slide it does'nt count. :)

1. Ya, shoot a 12 guage in your room, you have a good chance of going deaf.

Very serious.
I've fired a 12G inside a house before ( getting rid of a very mean black mamba ), and yes, it's quite brutal on the ears, but to be honest as far as physical pain goes it hurt me much more to fire a 9mm or.40 inside an inclosed space. I guess it has something to do with the very sharp crack that specificly a 9mm has. Weird, I know, but only my own experience, somebody else may experience it differently .

Remember, we are talking a self-defense situation here. The choice I think is an easy one : hearing damage, or being killed ? Deaf or dead ? :hmm:

As far as the Magnum goes, didnt revolvers go out when Colt stopped making the Peacemaker ? :D
Kidding of course, we can discuss this but usually topics about revolver vs pistol / 9mm vs. (insert random caliber) goes no where. I carry on a daily basis, so my choice is based on size , weight, mag capasity etc. We can discuss things like ballistic inifeciancy, rate of fire and such until the cows come home, but at the end of the day it all comes down to what you can afford and personal choice.

lol? If a guy is robbing your house and the ONLY weapon you got is a 12 guage, then sure, take the chance, but if you have other options, I'd take it. I'd rather use my magnum, or to be completely honest, one of my 22 rifles, but I don't ever use them unless I am wanting to kill something really small.

I would not use a Glock inside, unless it was all thats handy. I would rather use my throwing knives, cause they are quite effective and make no noise other than when the person screams in agony of having a blade stuck in him.

I don't think 'Home Defense' in a shooting someone to kill situation is a Christian attitude.

As far as russian rifles are concerned: The AK-47 comes in many modern varieties but all are regarded as being incredibly reliable.

The SVT-40 is quite an old gun and i heard it had issues in ww2 with jamming (probably quite fixable now). Few models were issued to snipers for that reason.

Personally i prefer the precision and satisfaction of a bolt. Grab a k98 mauser and have a merry old time blowing away angry looking cans.
