I have two that I carry all the time, one or the other. One is a Swiss Army knife, about $15-20.Has two blades, screwdriver, can opener, corkscrew and leathe awl.The other is a three bladed Uncle Henry, probably $7,unsure since I got as a gift. One tool I would hate to be without is a knife.I do not think of a knife as a weapon, even though many have been killed with one,it's all how and why it's used for.I guess you never know when you need one, which is why I carry one.My dad always carried one for long as I can remember. What kind do you carry?

If I were interviewing job applicants one of my questions would be where is your pocket knife and if they didn't have something that at least passed for a knife/multitool,I would cross their name off the list because you can't work without one. It is essential to a man as a womans purse is to her,I carry a German Eye 4 blade now but it is nearly worn out,and is getting close to retirement,I don't know what i'll get next but it will most likely be German too.

I'm not sure pocket knives are legal in the People's Republic of Chicago, but I'm thinking of adding a little one of these to the "just in case" boxes downstairs.

I'm not sure about legal in Chicago,But the definition of illeagle in KY is -a large sick bird,Did I say that out loud ?I did didn't I? I don't get it a pocketknife is illegal but the mayor has had the same last name for forty years, what's that all about?

a Leatherman. Priceless, espesially when I'm farming .

I used to say one cannot farm without at least one roll of duct tape, a bag of cable ties and at least one tube of silicone. I added a Leatherman to that list since my wife gave me one for Christmas a few years back. :D

I carry what I think is the smallest Swiss Army knife you can get. It's got a blade about 1.5" long, a tweezer, toothpick, tiny scissors and a nailfile (the last one that broke had a screwdriver but when I replaced it I found they had changed it for a nailfile).

In the UK anything much bigger than that is considered an offensive weapon - I think the limit is a three-inch blade that folds away and doesn't lock but I'm never entirely sure.

A sharpened spoon doesn't fold so would probably be classed as an offensive weapon.

No, I'm not joking...

I know , I know, UK laws are brutal when it comes to these things. I had a discussion with some UK survivalist types about what the best thing would be to keep under their beds in case of a home invasion/ break-in, talking of fire extinguishers and other things that would not land them in too much trouble.

I almost felt sorry for them, until I realised that they probably didnt need what I'm keeping under my bed for the same purposes.

If you're talking home protection that's a different thing entirely, the issue is with carrying weapons in public places.

In my kitchen I have a brace of kitchen knives, including a couple of blades 10-12" long. I've also got a woodsaw with a curved blade about 24" long with teeth on it that will cut through an inch-thick branch in a single stroke.

If I used any of the above against an intruder in my home I'd expect to go to jail for it, but keeping them in my home isn't against the law.

My regular carry in my pocket is a 3 blade Boker/Soligen Tree Brand that my father gave to me. We was carrying it in his pocket the night I was born, so it's got a couple of miles on it, but you could probably still shave with it in a pinch.

When I need something other than a pocket knife, its a Gerber Mark I, blackened.

It is the best balanced knife I have ever owned. It is a straight skinning knife with about a 6" blade. He hasn't made straight knives in decades. He is a pioneer in knife making, inventing the lock back and the drop point blade and was the president of the knife maker's guild for years. My dad used to be on the Tampa Fire Department with him back in the 60's. My mom bought it for (I think) $125 for their first anniversary custom made, just for dad. It's approximate value today has two more zeros on it...;)

Pocket knives, what do you carry? (http://bibleforums.org/showthread.php?t=185852)

I carry a pair of nail clippers and it has a litte knife inside which I will use as a weapon if I have to, now mind you it's all of almost 2' in length and it's rigid like a file.

Still too loud in some circumstances!!!

Is that someone else's photo, or does that belong to a man, whether in the body or out of the body, you do not know?

Wouldn't that be better chambered in .45 ACP with subsonic loads? If you try to subsonic that in 9mm or .40 S&W, won't the round just sort of roll out the end of the barrel?

Firefighter
Aug 19th 2009, 04:48 PM
No, I don't have one of those yet. But it is in the works...;)

Why subsonic? Have you heard the crack of a .40? It is pretty quiet.

At 25-50 yards, that would be a Depends moment.

I bought one of these over the weekend and you're right, very practical, plus you don't have to take care of the blade at all : if you wan't to cut something, then go ahead and do it, if you mess up the blade just change it out with a new one. ( It gets packaged with 5 extra )

I always carry two. In the exact same place in the exact same pockets all the time - if one is missing, I know instantly and get a panicky feeling. The first is a Case like this one:

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:ssWR6VT0gtf0DM:http://images.smarter.com/300x300x15/47/46/26619546.jpg

a gift from my wife when we were dating. Not much as a tool, but perfect for cutting on a stick and high sentimental value.

The second is a leatherman Charge TTi:

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:-LCUpmUqHWgVVM:http://www.nightgear.co.uk/images/p/l/1/1097/Leatherman-Charge-TTi-Multi-Tool.jpg

Living on a farm, I've always said that the real value of a knife/multi-tool, is the number of walks back to your workshop the tool saves you from making. This one does the trick nicely as I find myself reaching for it constantly. I've had one leatherman or another on my belt for as long as I can remember and couldn't recommend them more (I've had gerbers, but the pliers pinch me far more than the leatherman)

It's funny that this thread should pop up now as this past Friday, on my way home, at the bus station in Atlanta, I nearly was arrested for walking in with this "weapon" on my belt. I'm so clueless sometimes, when the policeman asked me if I had a knife, I thought he needed to borrow one, so I whipped it out and opened the blade for him - you would have thought I was robbing a bank by the way he reacted. It never occurred to me to think of it as a weapon - where I'm from, everyone has some kind of knife or another on them all the time. The Atlanta police felt otherwise. Took me in the back. Frisked me. Went through my bags. Told me that he could arrest me on the spot for entering the terminal with a weapon. In the end, after a lot of contriteness and humility on my part, and showing him how to unlock and close the blade (you gotta love city folk) he let me ship the knife to myself on the same bus on which I was riding for an additional 7 bucks, which was annoying, but I guess better than buying a new knife - or posting bail.

Reminds of a trip back in '98, on my way to a job in the D.R. Congo, I was passing through Brussels airport. This was of course before 9/11 and you could carry pocketknives in your carry-on baggage. I had a brutal cold develop on the way over from Vancouver to Amsterdam then to Brussels and felt like garbage after and 8 hour layover. At security the lady asked if I had a knife in my bag (after scanning), I said yes, and took it out. It was a Leatherman SuperTool. She then asked if it had a locking blade. "Yes" said I. I was then told locking blades are illegal in Belgium (even though I am leaving Belgium, though it was on the Sabena, the Belgian carrier). So my only option was to take it and put it in checked. I get escorted to baggage check, they put it in an envelope and I pretty much kiss it goodbye as I will be arriving in Kinshasa airport (which is pretty much a gong show). Back up through security, they recheck my bag (same lady) and again ask if I have a knife to which I say "Yes". I was bringing another Leatherman for a colleague on the project. It was still in the box, but this one did not have a locking blade. I was a little annoyed, very tired and very sick, but I guess I should have remembered that I had that one too. Anyway they let me through at last. Amazingly I actually retrieved my checked knife in Kinshasa.

I also have a single blade knife (maybe 3 inches?) Have any of you guys ever owned a mora knife? I hear they are good knives that are cheap. some are even under $10. I carry a single locking blade piece of junk made in china as an all purpose utility knife. A friend gave it to me some 25 years ago. The steel is sub par maybe a bit on the soft side. I have been brutal with this knife using it for all manner of things knives are not supposed to be used for. I also carry a swiss army knife with the corkscrew, bottle & can opener, saw, awl and philips / flat screwdriver functions. The swiss army knife steel is somewhat brittle and I ended up breaking the tip off of every swiss army knife I own.
