I like westerns and have seen a million of them,or so it seems like. I used to like Clint Eastwood's spaggetti westerns because in my mind(at the time) I veiwed as the real rest.I like westrned that capture my imagination of how the old west really was.Of all the westerns I watched,I find two John Wayne movies to be my favorite. One is called "The Searchers" and the other one is "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance". The latter catches my imagination of how the west was more than any of them. What's yours?

True Grit or Lonesome Dove one had the Duke and both had Duvall and technically it is not a western I'd have to give The Man from Snowy River an honorable mention.Actually if it is a western I'll probably watch it except for Bronson movies,I know a lot of people like his movies but I just don't.

Can't believe this one took so many posts to show up. I saw the topic and thought it was a no-brainer. That was Clint Eastwood's high water mark.

"Whooped em again, eh Jose?
"Yeah, whooped em again kid."

As I think about it, If I had to pick my top five they would all be Clint Eastwood westerns.

Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Hang em High

I love westerns. I grew up with them.

My all time favorite bar none is Tombstone. Val Kilmer should have won an Oscar for his Doc Holliday. I have a framed movie poster hanging on the wall of my open staircase that goes up to our bedrooms.

Second would be Magnificant Seven. This was my favorite until Tombstone came out. I would never have thought that a western could be made that would top this. Also one of the great musical backgrounds ever written.

Third would be Rio Lobo. John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Ricky Nelson, just a fun movie.

Next is a tie between Outlaw Josey Wales and Big Jake.

For humor and fight seens it is hard to beat They Call Me Trinity.

I have to chip in a few tv shows:

Wanted Dead or Alive- Steve McQueen at his coolest.

Have Gun Will Travel- Richard Boone the class of the west.

The Rebel- Johnny Yuma was the Rebel

Wild Wild West- Campy fun.

Kung Fu- Always entertaining.

Yes I left off Gun Smoke. As much as I liked westerns, this one always bored me. I tried to like it. My grandparents liked it and made us watch it. It was only one tick better than Lawrence Welk. I realize I am in the minority as it outlasted almost all other shows, but I just couldn't get into it.

I was no fan of Bonanza either. But it was still a lot better than Gunsmoke.

And when I was a very young man it was Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, Bat Masterson, The Texas Rangers, and Wyatt Earp.

Funny you should mention tv westerns,Gregg. I went to Cracker Barrel the other night and bought a dvd with 150 tv western on it,12 discs in all, front and back.Should keep me entertained for awhile.

Plumb for about "Outlaw Josey Wales",don't see how I missed it.I also like Tombstone, especially the gunfight scene.I grew up in Az,so I learned all about the history and the fight at the OK corral.I also visited Tombstone once, still alive today.Just not as dangerous as it was 130 years ago.

Nice. Now I know what to ask for for Christmas.

I have read all I could on Doc Holliday, Brothers Earp, and the OK Corral. I like biographies, both western and hollywood. Tom Mix was a pall bearer for Wyatt Earp.

Great flick and right on about Val Kilmer. Interesting, most of those snappy lines Kilmer recited in that movie (including the "I'm you huckleberry" line) were actual quotes from Doc Holiday.

I'm going to get my dad that for Christmas. He probably won't get out of the recliner for three days. Do you have a Hastings book store in your area,or a Barnes & Noble? They should have lots of information on the old west. The History Channel has some pretty interesting shows featuring the west. I watched an episode called "Sharp Shooters". Pretty cool, and them guys are amazing shots!

There was a time in my life that I bought a lot of old bios on ebay. I was getting them from $2.00-$25.00. Now I am spending more time in The Word, and other Christian books that I do not have much time for the old west hobby.

I can tell you that I have an oil painting of John Wayne (purchased for about $20 at a flee market), and a seperate photo with his signature framed (the antique frame was a surprise gift from my Mom and wife about 15 years ago) in my basement. I have two of my old toy guns hanging next to them. One is a Fanner 50. Oh yeah, I was a fast draw when I was eight years old.

Single favorite John Wayne western is tough, probably "Big Jake".... but listing some of my favorite quotes is much easier....

"And now you understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all... your fault, my fault, nobody's fault... it won't matter - I'm gonna blow your head off. No matter what else happens, no matter who gets killed I'm gonna blow your head off. ” Big Jake

"Dog” Big Jake

"A big mouth don't make a big man" Big Jake

"Big Jake: Give us a room.
Hotel desk clerk: The dog is all right, but, ah, we do not allow Indians.
Big Jake: Do you allow Eskimos?
Hotel desk clerk: Yes.
Big Jake: Well, he's an *Eskimo*. " Big Jake

"I aim to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. What'll it be?" True Grit

"I ain't lookin' for trouble, -never have...but if you are I'll accommodate you" True Grit

"Any man who packs a big bore Sharps carbine could come in mighty handy... if we're attacked by buffalo or elephants" True Grit

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do those things to other people and I require the same from them" The Shootist

"First thing is, that target wasn't shooting back at you. Second, most men at that last second will flinch; I won't." The Shootist

"Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid." Sands of Iwo Jima

"You call the tune and you pay the piper. Meaning... you don't like the treatment, don't rob the banks." Cahill US Marshall

"Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway"

"Well I don't favor talking to vermin, but I'll talk to you just this once. You're not just getting started. The line's been drawn. But if one of your men cross my land or even touch one of my cows, or do anything to that store, I'm not going to the sheriff, the governor, or the president of the United States. I'm coming to see you." Chisum

"I'm looking at a tin star with a ... drunk pinned on it." El Dorado

"We've seen what you can do with a boy. How are you when they come a little bigger?" The Cowboys

"We built your fort. We will not have it used against us." Allegheny Uprising

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I don't remember quotes very well, but I can remember the scenes when you write them.

peckinpah's the wild bunch is my favorite western, especially the last 15 minutes.

it recently occured to me that with the exception of shane and the searchers, there aren't many westerns made before about 1968 that care much for (tho i certainly haven't seen them all). i love westerns, but i like them best that have moved out of the "sentimental" mode and into the "realist" mode of more modern film esthetic. in other words, more gritty, dirty, and violent.

speaking of westerns, have any of you read cormac mccarthy's blood meridian?

Pale Rider is hard to beat.

The Cowboys is right up there.

My only complaint with True Grit is the Rockie Mountains and those big ponderosa pines being so close to Fort Smith, Arkansas...
