From what I understand Pharisaic Judaism became Rabbinic Judaism.

From what I've read, Pharisaic Judaism/Rabbinic Judaism accepts the Talmud, while Sadducaic Judaism/Karaite Judaism doesn't.

Recently, while doing research, I came across a reference to there being at least two different Pharisaic sects. Does anyone on here know anything about this?

Do these two groups have names? Are these two groups contemporary, medieval, or earlier? Where did you see this refrence?

I'd have to go back and look, but I think one was called "the Hillel school" or "the Hillel sect". Something like that. I have them written down on a notepad, which I don't have with me at the moment.

They were mentioned in the context of during the lifetime of Jesus. I came across the references while doing research on the life of Jesus. I'd have to go back and look at the notes to remember exactly where I came across the references.

I've basically got piles of notebooks of research on various subjects I've done, and several of these notebooks are currently missing, but foretunately not that particular notebook... yet.

Hillel and Shammai (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/hillel.html)

Not two sects, merely two schools of thought that disagreed on some of the finer nuances of Jewish law.

I'm not quite sure if Pharisaic Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism are synonymous.

Followers of today's rabbinical Judaism see themselves as the philosophical descendants of the Pharisees.

Is that a good thing?

If you think that the Pharisees were correct, it's a great thing! :pp

I've come across the terms Hillelites and Shammaites.

I've really just started researching who Hillel and Shammai were and what they stood for, so I really can't say much else.

They were two rabbis who represented two schools of thought within Judaism. I quote this good article by Rabbi Glazer-

The Talmud records over 300 differences of opinion between Beit Hillel (the House of Hillel) and Beit Shammai (the House of Shammai).

...

Hillel was far more liberal that Shammai. He erred on the side of the individual and making Judaism more accessible to potential converts. He was known for his kindness, gentleness and concern for humanity. Hillel’s life began in such great poverty that he could not afford to study Torah and because of him the fee for studying Torah was forever abolished.

...

To this day Jewish law almost always agrees with the school of Hillel. Why? The Talmud (Eruvin 13b) explains that…“the words of both schools are the words of the living God—elu v’eilu divrei Elohim Chayim,” but the law follows the rulings of the school of Hillel largely because he studied the views and opinions of others and humbly quoted their words before their own. The sages tell us that in their disputes Hillel and Shammai were arguing for the sake of heaven, that is to achieve the highest good and therefore both their viewpoints will live forever.

Does this then mean that there are two standards of truth? As in the case of quantum physics, from the viewpoint of Jewish mysticism, everything is about perspective. In an imperfect like the one in which we live, we err on the side of Hillel’s pragmatism, but in the messianic era, after humanity has achieved a more enlightened state, we will revert to the practices established through Shammai's astute insights.
