My 15 year old daughter has been struggling with acne for a year now. She was having some success with the Neutrogena acne system, but then all at once, it seemed like her acne wasn't responding to anything. As a matter of fact, her mild acne was suddenly very severe. We took her to our family doctor, and the doctor wanted to know why we waited so long. I felt kind of foolish, but we were trying various over the counter plans first. The doctor put her on an antibiotic for 30 days. She is about a week from finishing her antibiotic and there has been a dramatic improvement in her face. Besides the antibiotic, she has a prescription face wash and prescription lotion. Each medice, according to the doctor are the basic meds used to treat acne, so I am very surprised at the improvement. I am especially surprised, because the doctor told us we should see results in 8 weeks, and it's not quite been 4 yet and we are seeing the results we are.

My medical insurance covered all of her prescriptions 100%. We did have to ask the doctor to substitute one medicine she prescribed so that we wouldn't have to buy it ourselves, but she was able to prescribe something else that the insurance paid 100%.

Just wanted to share in case someone else is trying to make a decision about their teen's acne.

I had fairly bad acne in my teens, OTC washes and antibiotics were of minimal benefit. Eventually I used Accutane which cleared it up permanently nearly overnight. But its not innocent, you have to be extremely careful as it can produce long-term side effects in some people and can induce severe birth defects in a fetus if the patient is pregnant. A pregnant woman cannot even handle the tablets. Any woman who takes it has to sign a form absolutely guaranteeing to use a minimum of two methods of birth control, one has to be hormonal and must be taken even if not sexually active, that's how serious they take it, and for good reason. I've heard that of the OTC stuff, pro-active which was not out in my day is very successful and without risk.
