During Easter dinner at the in-laws I was informed that the roman catholic church where my wife grew up was being replaced with a new and larger edifice. The in-laws were very excited about this event since it occurs so infrequently. During the conversation it was disclosed that they were wondering about the bones for the new church. Apparently every catholic church claims to have some of the bones of Jesus in the altar.
I find it difficult to believe that roman catholics would believe that they have the bones of Jesus in their churches. The bible teaches that Jesus rose from the dead bodily. The tomb was empty. No bones of Jesus in the empty tomb.
I do not want to make fun of family but this just seems beyond the pale.

It does seem beyond belief.
Firstly, as you say, the Bible says that at the resurrection the body was gone and that the linen cloths were left behind. How anyone could get bones from that is unclear. The Bible also tells us that Jesus was taken up into heaven and makes no mention of bones left behind.
Secondly, even if we were to accept that Jesus had died a second time and his bones were therefore left behind (let's assume for now that such acceptance didn't throw the whole divinity of Jesus into question) there are only so many bones to be shared around. If every catholic church were to have even one bone then as soon as they got to 206 churches they'd run out of bones. Unless they were to break bones into little pieces to share them out further, but frankly breaking up the bones of Jesus like that becomes even more absurd than the assumptions to get that far.

What I do know that in most older European churches, the priests and cardinals and such as usually buried in the crypts of the churches. It's an honored place where nobles and their families have been buried also. I once visited such a church in Sicily and it was very unsettling. Most of the bodies were propped upright and had desiccated in the colder dryer air. You could see their faces and they had their hair intact and wore the clothing of the times in which they died.

Suprized that I sup with catholics? I was not a Christian when I married my wife. I was talking to the older generation of the family and reflecting on how church has changed in the last fifty years.
I continue to be amazed at the ability of roman catholics to believe the unbelievable. They have a long history of venerating objects but I found this one to be exceptional even for roman catholic tradition.
It defies logic and contradicts scripture yet it is still taught till this day.

Jesus dealt with a man possesed by legion who lived in the graveyard. The irony of this should not be lost. The vatican has a ton of bones in storage. Are they somewhat preoccupied with dead bodies?

Experience has taught me that discussing the obvious errors of roman catholic traditions is far less effective than lifting up the Lord Jesus and His perfect work on Calvary.
When they get all spooked out it is my delight to tell them of the peace that comes from trusting in the finished work of Christ. It is peace that they seek and rome cannot provide. For thirty years I have given them the gospel and they know it as well as you or I but only God can change their hearts to believe and receive. Religious people are often the most resistant to Gods word both here in the forum and in the home.

But bones of Jesus have nothing to do with traditions at all. That's just lack of knowledge. They believe Jesus rose from the dead, how could they possibly believe that he left some bones behind. Even a non believer would know that's common sense.

Well if you had been trained from birth like most roman catholics that whatever the church says is so you would understand. They are taught that the bread and the cup are transformed into the actual body and blood of Christ so why is it so hard to believe that some bones are transformed into the bones of Jesus?

I've never heard of this before, but I am very interested to know if this is a widely-held belief in the RCC, or if someone was getting their wires crossed a bit. Easy enough to do with all the superstitions they adopt. How do you keep the sanctity of one thing that people come up with seperate from the non-sanctity of somthing else people come up with?
Confusing.

A lot of the people from this area are of central European ancestry and are know for their well developed personalities. I have long said that you can always tell a German but you cannot tell him much. Well when it comes to Croatian personalities they make us Germans seem downright malleable.

First of all they are not so inclined. Secondly my wife confirmed what they were saying. My wife knows the Lord and would not be party to any such activity.
There was genuine excitement in their desire to attend the dedication of the new church building. Don't know if they will take the old bones to the new church or get new bones for the new church. I doubt they will invite me to attend.

There is no conflict if you do not believe in a bodily resurrection. Christians believe in an empty tomb but it is taught that the Lords body was secreted away.

They are 1000 percent wrong. Each RC Church has a thing from a saint, be it a bone a hanky, anything the saint had. The Catholic Church also teaches Christ rose so no bones, theses people while sincere are completely wrong.

That would be much more believeable but still idol worship. They are indoctrinated into church tradition at the expense of biblical teaching.
Guess I'll have to search the catholic information sites to see what they have written on the subject.
