Need to get an internet filter for a family computer. We have an eight year old daughter and several young nefews that will use our computer. Also I want to help with any kind of temptation and accountablity and prevention of pornography or unchristian influences to enter our home. Any reviews or suggestions?

Put the computer in either the kitchen or the living room. No one on it unless Mom or Dad in the room.

This is the best filter.

I agree... no matter how thorough your filter is it can only be so effective. If adults are watching (or can see the screen from wherever they are in the room) it will focus young minds far better than any filter.

You can go three routes. The paid for filter for Windows like this (http://www.afo.net/), this (http://www.wisechoice.net/forchristians/), or this (http://www.menofintegrity.org/christianinternetfilter.html). You could go the free route like here (http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=internet+filters+christian+free&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B7GGLL_enUS387&ie=UTF-8&aq=0&oq=internet+filters+christian+f) and as an alternative you could try Linux specifically PCLinuxOS has filtering software included here www.pclinuxos.com and the plus is you can run it from the CD and you can't get no viruses or malware with it. :) Hope that helps

Agreed with the supervision. The computer is located in the living room and easily visable to everyone in the living room/kitchen area. Any reviews on software that helps with general internet usage? An example of what I would need ones help with is the other day my wife (who is a nurse) was looking up pictures (images) of TB tests to see what the different results look like. When she looked through the images on the very first page was a woman with her legs spread wide open and completely nude in a pornographic manner. It was an inoccent search and that is an image that was one of the first. I know sometimes you can misspell or mis stroke a key and search something completely different than what you are looking for. Are there any filters that protect your computer from bad images or bad sights that can be mistakenly viewed? Thats the main reason we want one.

If you're using Google Images set Safe Search to Moderate. As far as I can tell it stops the less desirable images from showing up.

It's easy enough to change the settings, but it's not something you'd do by accident.

Also,

I have used and recommend K-9 which is free for home use and is great for protecting kids.

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

It's password operated and monitors blocked websites The parent can review these blocked websites with password. Please be advised that it blocks social-sites. An occasional friendly site also might be blocked, but can be unblocked with password. The parent can actually make many choices as to what gets through.

If by chance it doesn't download properly the first time, there are instructions. K-9 will first issue you a free license # by email.

You might want to set up k-9 on a separate user account for the kids. When a bad site is hit, even by accident, you can hear a dog barking.

K-9 is as good as any out there.

I agree with this if the issue is just inappropriate images showing up while doing an innocent image search. From my experience you won't get any extremely inappropriate images (like nudity) with this. If there would be one image that would slip through it would be on one of the last pages of the results. Also, it is nice because you can set this and it stays that way and there is no need to use passwords and all. Also, as far as I can tell the good results are still good and complete and you don't lose images that aren't inappropriate and thus can still get meaningful results. If you set the filter to strict your results will start suffering and honestly there is no need to. This is also nice because you don't have to worry about a filter blocking good sites that aren't inappropriate.
