My husband and I are yet to be blessed with children but we often talk about what we intend to do as parents. One debate we've had is circumcision. My husband isn't circumcised and he doesn't believe that his kids have to be, either. I believe that they do have to be. He asked why, I told him that it was in the bible, that God commanded that we do this to our sons. So I gave him the verses, he read but he still wants to know why God commanded it. I told him that God said to make it so, so it will be done.
He said that if we were born perfectly the way we are and if God didn't want us to have our foreskin, He would have taken it off Himself. But the only thing I can say is that God wants it done, so it will be done.
But what else can I tell him? What else can I say to make him understand God's wish?

Are either of you Jewish?

Actually for the sake of hygiene, it's recommended. I had a younger cousin that almost died of a few infections due to being uncircumcised. Once he was circumcised he never had any more issues.
Now biblically this was for the Jews as a sign mandated by God to Abraham. But we are not Jews and under that covenant that would require us to fulfill the outward sign of being a believer.

It's not a requirement for Christians, Paul was solid on that.

Paul tells us that the circumcision we have now is of the heart: Rom 2:29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart; in spirit and not in letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God. The main thing is to teach the child to keep themselves clean and they will usually be ok. My son had a skin condition that could have easily caused infections but through being strict on hygeine with him he was fine. Medical intervention is sometimes required but only if there is a problem.

Perhaps a quick read of Acts 15 and the first parts of Galatians chapters 2 and 5 is in order. It was the consensus of all the apostles, not just Paul, that circumcision is not for gentiles (at least, not on a covenant basis). For health reasons can be a different matter.

I have to agree with Seeking. Circumcision is not a requirement for Christians, however it is much better health-wise to be circumcised than uncircumcised.

This isn't a universally held medical opinion.

Thank you for the input, ladies and gentlemen. :) Sometimes, I think I know what I'm doing/ talking about and then it's clear that I don't and there's just so much more to know. Thank you for your patience in explaining this to me.
