View Full Version : 9.0 Quake hits Japan..................

Liquid Tension

A 7.9 earthquake hit Japan a few hours ago. Tsunami warnings are in effect for a large part of the Pacific, including a tsunami watch for Hawaii. One small tsunami has already struck in Japan, and the video I just saw appears (I think) to have been a second wave.

Yea that 8"wave that rolled into Hilo Harbor was something to see.

Have a feeling this one will be a little worse.

It seems the earthquake intensities are increasing over the last decade. 6.0-7.5 were the "big" ones not long ago. But not anymore.

I heard an approximately 2 metre surge has hit the Islands, little damage so far reported. I think our coast is anticiating a 1 metre surge, but that should not pose any problems...

..compared to the 10 metre ones in Japan.

Prayers for all.

My mom is less than a mile from the coast in Huntington Beach, CA, and said it's low tide there, and it shouldn't be too bad, from what they can see so far. Praying for the people in Japan and elsewhere effected by this!

Just heard from a close friend in the Vancouver area of Canada... they've already had the first swell and the rivers filled up amazingly quick. So even though it will be nothing compared to Japan obviously.... could cause a stink on these shores sure enough.

Really? I am listening to the news right now and the interviewee regarding this matter has stated nothing of the sort. A tide guage on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) recorded no significant swell. I am also in the Vancouver area. I'll look into that.

The problems over there aren't over yet. The nuclear reactor that produces a lot of power for them is still in an unstable condition.

I fear that they soon will have to pump concrete over the area where water once stood to try to contain the reactor which most certainly has lost most of it's integrity by this point. The radiation that is leaking currently is being taken out to sea. (where it will be greatly diluted to tolerable levels)

There is still widespread power outages and limited water, food, and housing for the millions who live there. The housing will be restored soon for the people but that won't provide water or food for that many people...and all of that may be a moot point if the winds shift and radiation begins to cover the country.

I know...:( I just posted a new thread about the nuclear reactors here: http://bibleforums.org/showthread.php/222131-World-watches-nervously-as-Japan-struggles-with-nuclear-reactors?p=2638537#post2638537

And I just heard in some large areas there is no food at all. They showed an American over there saying he has had nothing at all to eat or drink for 12 hours now because. :( They are going as fast as they can there to try to get aide in. There is a US Naval ship arriving there now to assist. U.S. troops, searchers and equipment arriving in Japan (http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/03/12/quake.response/index.html?hpt=T1)

Yes we do! And perhaps donate to the Red Cross (in the US) or find other ways to help these people in need.

This is a monumental tragedy that is still unfolding. Some notes from what I have been reading below. But this changes frequently and is not always accurate.

Over 200,000 people in shelters.
Much of northern Japan is without water, food, power or communications. Roads are heavily damaged so many areas are unreachable by ground. Even those told to evacuate from the areas around the nuclear reactors have a hard time getting out.
Several cities along the coast have been partly or completely wiped out. Helicopters have been rescuing a few people from the rooftops of the few buildings remaining standing.
Those in the path of the tsunami had less than 10 minutes of warning.
Four trains, one a Bullet Train with 400 people aboard, are missing.
10,000 people from one coastal town are unaccounted for.
One city was destroyed when a dam burst.
Fires continue to burn unabated across large parts of the country.
6 reactors at 2 plants are having cooling system failures. One may be in meltdown.
The island of Honshu (the main island of Japan) moved about 8 feet to the east according to GPS devices. The tilt of the earth changed by about 10 centimeters, and the earth’s rotation sped up by 1.6 microseconds.
The EQ has been upgraded to 9.0 or 9.1.
I have not read of a single report of looting.

Thanks for that. I hadn't heard they had upgraded the quake measurement. Someone else mentioned on one of the news articles that has been no reports of looting, rapes, muggings...etc, like we heard in the aftermath other places that have suffered major natural disasters. It might be there is nothing to loot...but still at least people aren't at each other. Some think its censoring ...but I seriously doubt they could keep that information out of the public eye. You can't steal from your neighbor if your neighbor has nothing. :(

I have been praying and praying for them.

God bless

I heard today that the quake that rocked Japan was upgraded to a 9.1 and moved the Island 13 feet toward the US, and it now sits 2 feet lower. Also this tilted the earth on it's axis further. Along with the one that occurred in Indonesia a number of years ago, plus the one in Haiti did it too last year. The full cut into our 24 hour days still isn't quite a full second, but that's 3 within a short period of time. And after a quake like Japan's that's gonna really put pressure on the earth's crust even more so, which means more quakes.

Here's a map showing the eastward displacement. The island bent eastward as much as 13 feet in some places. This means your car GPS unit won't be able to figure out what road you're on until you get updated maps. Of course, this is a rather minor problem right now.

http://supersites.earthobservations.org/Sendai_earthquake_coseismic.png

This image shows the vertical displacements. Areas along the east coast dropped about half a meter. The shoreline will be permanently changed.

WOW!! 9.1 now! I was kinda wondering if that was going to happen (upgrading the quake) again. If I'm not mistaken, the quake in Chile last year also shifted the earth's axis tilt a bit (7+ centimeters).
