Righteousness is not looking down on others, it is looking up to God. God has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, who knew no sin, by becoming sin for us. By receiving the atoning work of his sacrifice, we become the righteousness of God, having been made pure and thus able to stand in the presense of a Holy God.
