Good Deeds

When was the last time you were shocked or surprised by an awful event? There isn’t a day that goes by without something heinous making the front page of the newspaper. People have become numb. We’ve cultivated a society that thrives on negativity and leans toward believing the absolute worst about someone or something. In spite of our obvious conditioning, every once in a while someone will do something that is absolutely amazing. If you look hard enough, you might just see something that reaches way beyond the stereotypical gloom and doom.
It’s those random and seemingly unnoticed acts of kindness that need to be articulated. Recently, I had the pleasure of taking a business trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky. I was standing on the first floor and waiting for an elevator to arrive. I had the pleasure of waiting right next to a young couple; they were in their early twenty’s. She was dressed as normal as the next person, but there was something distinctly different about his attire. He was a battle-ready soldier boy, camouflaged from head-to-toe. He was her husband, a mother’s son, your neighbor, and my hero.
Are you paying attention? What I’m about to tell you will boggle your mind. I’m hoping that it might just change your perspective. Again, we need to see the positive in a world filled with so much negativity. I watched a man walk off the elevator as it reached the ground floor where we were waiting. He had his hands in his pockets and his head down. He glanced up, just quick enough to make eye contact with me, and then proceeded to walk right past us. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and then it happened. All of a sudden he stopped and shook the hand of the young military man. He said, “I want to thank you for all that you do for this country.”
I keep thinking about all of the good deeds that are done on a regular basis. Many of these deeds seem to go unnoticed. I wasn’t about to let this go. It was just the three of us on the elevator, and I couldn’t help but notice that they weren’t saying a word. I said, “Do you know who just shook your hand?” They both looked dazed and confused by my question, almost embarrassed. She said, “We have no idea.” I said, “That was Isiah Thomas, one of the greatest NBA players of all-time.”
Remember, no good deed goes unnoticed; God sees them all.
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. (Revelation 22:12)
