Same sex marriage

For a long time, debates--often heated and emotional, have addressed the issue of same sex marriage, and whether gay couples should be afforded the same legitimacy under law as married heterosexual couples. I do not understand the importance and sense of urgency lavished upon it --either by individuals or the Obama administration. Given the high priority our President has given Gay Rights, it seems that even the dark, impending economic disaster now overshadowing this country has taken a back seat to the issue.
For quite some time, thread after thread on this board has been devoted to the debate, often dragging on endlessly, page after page. Over and over, the same arguments are made--often by the same people, for and against the passage of laws concerning same sex marriage:
"It's hateful and unchristian-like to condemn people for being gay."
"We're not condemning. And it's not hate to warn the unsaved about the consequences of unrepentant sin."
"Why is adultery, fornication, and gluttony given a pass, while homosexuality is always singled out and vilified?"
"When are these other sins publicly advocated, as homosexuality is?"
First, let's agree that lewd and lascivious behavior is not the exclusive domain of either homosexuals OR heterosexuals--and that God doesn't use some kind of "sin scale," or is biased against one group over another. And let's agree that homosexuals do their share of "fornicating." While the LGBT community likes to project the image that most same sex couples are in stable, monogamous relationships, promiscuity and multiple partners are quite common among gay men.
Obviously, the 3-5 percent of the population which homosexuals comprise accounts for a smaller percent of total sexual activity with multiple sex partners than heterosexuals. But let's call to remembrance which segment of the population was first ravaged by AIDS, how it got started, and how quickly it spread around the world via sexuality by means of obviously less than monogamous relationships. The point is, the tired old "fornication vs homosexuality" argument is wearing a bit thin, so let's keep it real.
Secondly, it's disingenuous to suggest that society as a whole, gives greater license to sexual immorality among heterosexuals than it does homosexuals. Those who truly hold to traditional moral values (admittedly a dying breed), do not show favoritism with regard to lewd and lascivious behavior. Admittedly, homosexuality may be viewed by many as contrary to nature and normal human sexuality--in addition to being immoral. But then, it is isn't it? Same sex marriage is consistently voted down by a clear majority every time it's put to a vote. So apparently, a majority of Americans--not just a bunch of hateful bigots--seem to hold same sex marriage in disfavor.
Yet, civil unions and gay marriage would not be growing in acceptance among the public and within state governments if there were not tremendous public support. Gay rights proponents have made great strides, and have begun to exert great influence in recent years in virtually every sphere of society--due in large part to a growing percentage of society that has adapted to the "new morality" mindset that began in the 1960's.
So the argument that adultery and fornication are okay, but homosexuality is a sin, is both invalid and intellectually dishonest. In fact, it's becoming increasingly clear that the last rampart in opposition to the LGBT agenda exists mostly among older, Christian conservatives. And why is that do you suppose? Is it hate? Insensitivity? Intolerance? Are Christians hypocritically belying the love they profess? Or, is it maybe something else?
Maybe, just maybe, gay marriage truly offends their moral sensibilities--and they're loathe to compromise their values by accepting the same unnatural sexuality and disease-ridden society that characterized Sodom and Gomorrah. Maybe they fear God, and dread being complicit in bringing a similarly horrific judgment upon our nation. Maybe it's because other once mighty nations such as the Roman Empire, collapsed because of internal, moral decay, and they seek to avoid facilitating and hastening a similar demise of our society. Maybe they see it as a spiritual Trojan Horse that we will unwittingly bring within our gates--and foolishly embrace, like some spiritual leprosy.
Maybe they don't want to see the sacred institution of marriage--a type of Jesus and the Church--made a mockery of. Maybe they recognize that the family unit is the building block of our society, and see the redefinition of marriage and the family unit as a means of fomenting the deterioration of that foundation--a foundation that held us together as nation through two world wars, and the Great Depression--only to then be breached and eroded in the 1960's by a spiritual tsunami of godlessness, drug abuse, "free love," and utter, moral depravity.
And maybe they don't like seeing our President and his minions making Gay Rights such a priority and pillar of his administration, pandering to a tiny percent of the population. Maybe they would prefer he focus on more important matters like the economy, which is crumbling under the sheer weight of an unsustainable debt and insane, out of control spending--with no jobs being created to replenish the rapidly depleting US Treasury.
Or maybe its all of these things together.
There are those (including a growing segment of modern, "Progressive" Christians), who say we should just embrace diversity, and give same sex couples the same status and basic rights as married couples. After all, it's a matter of law, not morality, right? And it does seem a nationwide acceptance of same sex marriage is pretty much inevitable at this point. America's moral compass has been broken for a long time. And we are so far off course from the godly precepts we once lived by, that we as a nation, will probably never find our way back. Immorality is being both encouraged and facilitated among youth and even children--even as the influence of God and a sense of morality are being systematically disdained and swept away.
So, I'm personally tired of arguing about the matter. I'm tired of reiterating the fact that standing for godliness and traditional values--and warning the unsaved of the eternal consequences of unrepentant ungodliness--equals love, not hate. That simple truth just seems to fall on deaf ears these days. Our society is past the tipping point in its leaning away from our original core values. The same spiritual darkness is now spreading across the entire world, and Satan's kingdom will finally enjoy its brief global reign--before the Lord of glory returns to destroy it and all those who are part of it; and to render both rewards and punishments, according to His perfect will and justice.
Those of us who are saddened by the path our nation is currently on, cannot stop what will happen. But we can steadfastly stand on the Word of God, firmly hold on to our faith and convictions, and lift our lamps aloft, to illuminate the Way, the truth and the life for those are still able to discern the light from the darkness. After all, God did not call us to help transform the world, but to help transform individuals through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Satan can have his fleeting kingdom--this lost and dying world system, and the children of darkness who are his foolish, unwitting pawns--and welcome to it.But the standards embraced by individuals today--whether of this world or of heaven--will lead them into eternity.
