  • Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath set you free!

How well we all know that the flesh is easily enticed! Without Christ in us, we have no hope. But I have been reading Romans 6-8, Second Corinthians 5 and the entire book of Galatians and over and over God is showing that we are new creations, and the flesh no longer has a grip on our souls. Satan has succeeded in lying to us and we have bought it, hook, line and sinker. The salvation our Lord has purchased for us, the glorious liberty of the children of God, has been turned into a place of defeat and holding on, rather that one of joy unspeakable and full of glory.

But in these last days, God is revealing the truth of the new covenant that applies to all who love him in truth. No more are God’s children to labor under the bondage that the old covenant, the law, generates in our souls.

Let us finally accept the pronouncement of guilty the law has for any who breaks even one of the commandments. And what do we deserve as the penalty? Death. But listen, saints of God! When Jesus died, becoming sin for us, He paid our penalty! We died with him! And as Christ arose from the dead, we have too.

We are now new creatures, and we cannot be declared sinners any longer. Why? Because the law has no more hold on us, as it only have a hold on a man as long as he lives, and we died with Christ.

The law can no more tell us we are sinners, for it does not any longer apply to us, we who have Christ inside. Do we still have character flaws that need to be infused with the character of the one living inside us? YES! ((and some, like me, more than others!) But it is so very important that we see ourselves as Christ sees us. We are justified, thoroughly cleansed of the old nature, from where the lusts of the flesh are born.

The law has no more sway on us. We have escaped it, not by ignoring it, but by having submitted to it in Christ! We accepted its punishment- death. We that have accepted Christ were baptized into His death. Why? So that like as Christ rose to live ever more to God, so should we!

I have found it is only as I stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free (IT IS FINISHED!) that I find the power to defeat the flesh's wishes. I have found that what is hard now(...no...impossible!) becomes easier and easier as we walk in our new nature by faith, and the things that tripped us up before so very easily, lose their power over us.

But if I allow myself to listen to the accuser of the brethren, and agree once again that I remain a sinner with an old nature still intact, I am placing myself back under the law. I am saying to God "No, I am not clean. No, I am not justified. I am still a sinner!" and the strength of the flesh remains and thus the sins that follow it.

Oh, how I wish I could crawl into the hearts and minds of all of God's children and rip out the lie satan has had us all buy into. We were sinners. As Paul says so beautifully:

"And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."
    1 Corinthians 6:11

For us who are in Christ, the law pronounced its sentence. We received it....death when we accepted Jesus, for His death became ours. Once dead, we are out from under the law's grip, and we can be pronounced sinners no more.

Who are we then? We are the righteousness of God in Christ! We are justified, pronounced thoroughly clean! There is therefore now no condemnation on us, if we slip as we walk towards Jesus.

And if we slip, what then? Do we run back under the law and accepts its judgement and the condemnation it brings? NO! We aerve now in a new and living way. We repent, we confess our failure and we receive cleansing...full cleansing.

What is the state of our souls? Sinners? No! Justified, thoroughly cleansed children of God! Thus we walk on again with Him, all the while understanding we have been justified, and as we are now children of God, then His blood, the blood of the new covenant, continually cleanses us. It is a fountain that never runs dry, continually keeping us pure before our God. Amazing God that we serve!

Without this shield of faith, and if we buy into the lie that we are once again just sinners saved by grace, trying the best we can to become new for Him, we inadvertently are placing ourselves back under the authority of the law, and guilt follows, as does separation from God. Understand, dear brother.Let it sink in deep, sister in the Lord, We cannot walk in grace and law at the same time. It is serving two master and it is impossible.

Why? Because in our minds and hearts, we have laid down the truth of our FULL justification and accepted as fact from the mouth of our enemy that the blood of Christ does NOT cleanse us from ALL sin and thus, the condemnation that comes with the law comes back upon us. The battle now is not between God and satan. It is the battle in our minds and hearts, and we are urged to fight the good fight of faith. Shall we not believe our God?

"for as a man thinketh in His heart, so is he."

But praise God! Why should we who are dead to sin and guilt and condemnation give place for one minute more to the devil, the ultimate liar? There is therefore now NO condemnation in God's judgement. Shall we not cling to Him with broken thankful justified hearts?

I have found this in my own walk towards the glorious light of God. If I walk with a clean heart towards Him, holding fast my profession of faith in what my Lord has already accomplished, I do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. But if I allow myself to be blinded to who I am in Christ, or begin to think I can stand on my own, then I lower my shield, the accusations of the enemy find their mark once again, and I am brought back under guilt as I make myself a sinner. It is guaranteed that condemnation is sure to follow. So does more sin.

At the end of Galatians Paul says this:

"For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature."
    Galatians 6:5

We are new...NOW! We are not trying to become new. We are not to die to the old nature a little at a time. The old nature is a never ceasing cesspool of selfishness and lusts of the flesh. The only way to finally defeat the lusts of the flesh is to walk with our minds and hearts agreeing with God on the matter.

And what is that truth, the truth that really does set us free? Listen to God! Believe his amazing words! We are not in the flesh, we are told, but in the spirit. We are not the old man trying with all our might to be good. It is impossible! We are now new creatures in Christ. Old things are passed away...gone! The old man is dead! Long live the new man!

Therefore we do not let satan get an advantage over us any longer. If we fall, we confess to God, repent and IMMEDIATELY get up and again hold up our shield of faith, knowing this to be true, for our God hath declaried it.

I am the righteousness of God in Christ.

This is truth, and if we continue in it? The truth SHALL set us free indeed. And the sins we have found impossible to defeat will fall away from our lives like withered leaves from a tree that has had the ax laid to its roots.

How I wish that my words could open up eyes to see the truths of the full glory of our new covenant, and that the hold that the old covenant, the law, is been broken forever. The law, and the guilt it brings, is past. It has no more hold on us as children of God.

But my words cannot do the work. This is the job of the spirit inside us that must illuminate and draws all men to Him. I just pray right now that the spirit illuminate the truths of what Christ really accomplished for us on the cross. Forgiveness of old sins? Absolutely. But oh, if we could but understand and accept willingly, hungrily, the gift of the new nature He has freely given to us!

In Him we are free. Stand fast!

      Nice article BruceG.

What it comes down to so many times with Christians is are regrets. I think we let the devil get a foot hold when we start regretting our past and the way we behave during the day. Our attitudes may have been wrong and our actions towards others should have been more loving, but if we sit around feeling sorry and regretting and wishing we could have changed things we sink ourselves into a guilt trip.

Yes, we are guilty and have sinned against God and we should have had a better walk that day, but we can't change that day....we can only move forward. And only with Christ as our focus can we do this....because only He can give us the strength to do so. One of my old associate pastors said when we start feeling guilty because of the sins we have committed we should stop and say...thank you Satan, thank you for pointing out what I did wrong....now I can lay it at the cross of Jesus and know that I have received forgiveness and can get back up and walk towards God again.

You are absolutely correct. We have reduced Christian faith to simply believing whether Jesus died and rose from the dead. We easily assure ourselves we do. We need to ask ourselves if it is true faith, or just easy believism. Think for a minute. The disciples lived with Jesus every day for 3 and half years of ministry. They saw every miracle, they heard every sermon. Yet when Jesus was crucified, none was found waiting outside the tomb. None. Faith takes ones whole heart. It is not an exercise for the head, but a reaching out with the heart for all God wants to give us, so that we are fit to be used by Him for His glory.

Faith is rare in the church and unbelied is rampant, but God is awakening His bride again to the exceeding great and precious promises, promises we are to walk in by faith alone. This is the "good fight of faith", this is the shield of faith that quenches all the fiery darts of the enemy. How we have mistaken work for faith. Is it not to him that worketh not, but believeth that it is accounted for righteousness. When men came to Jesus and asked what they must do to work the works of God, what was his answer? Believe.

Dear Clay, yes, regrets play a big part. Satan is a master at getting us to look backwards, with regrets. Satan is good at getting us to look at ourselves, with our failures. But satan does not want us to look at Jesus, the author and the finished of our faith.

How we need it settled in our hearts. We are unworthy! Give us an another chance and we will fail again, if left to ourselves. Without Him , we can do nothing. Oh, if we could be learn that. All of our righteousness is as filthy rags. Settle it in your heart. We are nothing, and nothing we do, or have done shocks our Heavenly Father. he knows the state of man's fallen nature.

What He is shocked about though is our reluctance to believe, only believe. We want to work, to prove to God we mean business this time. But God has ordained in His wisdom and goodness that His righteousness is for them that worketh not, but only believe. Amazing God! We are His workmanship, not our own, and in this glorious salvation, where is boasting then? Who can boast other than in our glorifying our amazing God.

      Regrets? No more.

"forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Amen. I agree with you. Faith does take ones whole heart, in hearing the word of God and meditating on that Word day and night, many say they believe and yet if they were to examine their thoughts, they are filled with doubt. It is no wonder that Jesus said that the TRUTH shall set us free, what truth? His Word is truth, and He is the Word that became flesh,He is the truth. So whatever He says, He MEANS it! its TRUE! Truth sets me free from the bondage of sin, He sets me free from emotional bondage,He sets me free to do whatever He wants me to do! if I will just BELIEVE HIM and what He says is TRUE,then i am free indeed!Oh yes,i believe You my Lord!!!amen!

Dear JLM, thanks so much for the kind words, and if we were sharing about the typical thought processes about the gospel, I may have something to boast about! LOL. But in truth, when we finally are brought low enough to see that that is where the blessing is found, what is there to boast in when it is all by grace? Shall I boast in my great faith? Ha! It was sheer desperation that pushed me to the point of believing, for I had no other options left! In addition, the faith to overcome in itself is a gift...all our Father does is ask us to exercise it.

How hard it is for man to learn that without Him we can do nothing. How difficult to make men truly understand that unless the Lord builds the house, we labor in vain which try to build it, for it is only when we are weak (and know it!) that He can be strong in us.

You mentioned a wonderful aspect of walking...no...abiding in Christ. It is not a "state" we are brought to where we are now deemed overcomers, where we have "arrived". It is a daily 100% dependence on God to keep us from falling, and yet, knowing...not hoping...knowing... He will do it.

Thanks so much for your great comments.

I will be honest with you. So many are skeptical when someone says that we should be able to defeat the desires of the flesh. Is it promised in the word of God? Everywhere. Yet how unbelief grips the hearts of many. in all denominations.

I was saved in 1970 but even after my salvation, all the way up til late 2007, I was addicted to pornography. Not something I am proud of, but it was the truth. In October of that year, after trying anything and everything to get that ball and chain off my leg, I gave up. I broke before God and told Him that His way was too high, too hard, impossible! I was out of strength, out of any confidence in my own abilities to figure it out.I had fasted, prayed, memorized, read, attended, you name it, I had done it, and even after 37 years of following hard after God, this sin had me by the neck.

What happened next I can only summarize, for words fail me. But God's presence came over me and a voice said "For this, my son, I am well pleased with you." WHATTT?? 37 years of failure and I finally had given up and now He tells me he is pleased with me?

Then in an instant He led me to Romans 6 where we are told by Paul to reckon ourselves dead unto sin and alive unto Him. I had read Romans 1000 times, easily. Yet, not once had I ever done that in faith that it was meant to be true. Have I ever really "reckoned myself dead to sin"?No, i had not, and realized immediately the scripture "but it did not ptofit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. I spoke the words out loud, so my own ears could hear them, so satan could hear them, so my God who I longer to pleasse could hear them, and yes, He was pleased. Faith jumped inside me. Then all became clear.

It was not that I was too weak to walk victoriously, but too strong! I had labored under the spirit of the law to try to be good, rather than walking the pathway of faith...what Paul called fighting the good fight of faith. I was led to the scripture:

"Wherefore are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these, we might be partakers of the divine nature",

and the promises started coming to me from all directions...

God will not allow us to be tempted above that which we are able to stand

I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me

Sin shall not have dominion over me

He that is dead is freed from sin

above all holding the shield of faith, wherewith we shall quench all the fiery darts of the wcked one

God will cause us to will and to do of His good pleasure

and the overcame him (satan) by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony

They were everywhere, and all of them, like giant golden nuggets on top of the ground that we Christians continually ignore while we are scurrying over them , under them, around them with our little panning equipment trying to wrestle a bit of gold dust truth from God.

Ok, so here is my point in all this. For two years now, the strength of that sin has had its back broken. Even the lust is gone, which I truly never thought possible. It matters not what sin it is, nor how addicted one is to it, God wants to set us free indeed. This glorious gospel WORKS!

Blessings and thank you for some amazing comments!

It does not surprise me that you would have a powerful testimony like that my friend!! It is truly amazing how much He loves us, that even in our brokenness, He has a divine purpose for it and look what He did with your brokenness!!!He has had to break my own self will so that I can receive His word by faith, you ever notice the harder you try to obey God in your own strength, the more you are defeated? God set it up that way, so that we would NOT make flesh our strength, so we would NOT put confidence in the flesh, but in HIM who is able, through FAITH, believing His word that is TRUE. Amen? Thank you for sharing your testimony brother Bruce!

Do you remember what a chinese finger puzzle is? I had one as a child, and yes, it was past the cohestoga wagon era.

It was a woven tube6" long out of reed or thin bamboo. You strick fingers from two hands in the holes and then tried to free yourself.

The harder you pulled, the tighter it gripped you. That is what you described.

The lfesh will not go willingly into the night. Men and women who see themseves as failures, as "poor in spirit" are truly blessed. God loves all, but God often has to resort to tragedies to remind people they are dependant on God for their next breath.

Personlly, I think for the church as a whole ot be brought back to its knees, it will require something severe...a financial crisis, a war, famine, something to get our attention. It is sad becasue it is all unnecessary if we but chose to seek him with our whole hearts now. But man is a stubborn creature. Thank God He is more stubborn than we are.

Mentioning something severe? I agree it might take something like that to turn things around for the churches of today. I submit maybe it's not what is in store for them. Revelations has the messages to the seven churches which if you look closely are shadows and types of the churches of today.

I feel that most Denominations were established on truth for thier day. But like the sun moves from the east to the west. so does the Spirit of God move.

As soon as the people organise and create a name that they live, the light moves on. We have to be ready to move with it. Like the children of Isreal. When the cloud moved they packed up and followed.

As believers we have to be ready to move when the Spirit moves. Many set up roots in their organizations and fail to heed the calling of the Spirit.

I love all my brothers and sisters and I appreciate how valuable they are to me. Maybe I may not have the talent that God has given many of them to quote scripture and verse but I love them all.

Be ready, Instant, in season, and out of season.
      God bless you.

Wow, how great to hear someone else say they know what it means to know who you are in Christ. I have often gotten chided for saying these things. Yes, by Church leaders. Thank you for the post. I feel encouraged and stirred up once again. This kind of believer is so far and few between churches. Sometimes I hunger for such a fellowship. Then all of a sudden the Lord puts someone in my path that I might have opportunity to enlighten them so that they too might KNOW who they are in Christ Jesus. May we all continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of His wondrous love.

It all comes down to Godly Sorrow Vs. Worldy Sorrow

      In Christ's Love
Thank you for your insight. You are correct, we must thank God for letting us know the truth..but remember my friend, it is important to know the difference between the truth and a lie, and how we should go about preaching when we know the lie.
