attempting to upgrade my knowledge, as always

I'm still trying to figure out what, if any, connection there is between Syria and Assyria.

Since the word Assyria CONTAINS the word Syria, it seems logical to me that there would be SOME kind of connection.

From what I understand, at one time, Syria and Assyria co-existed, but now there still is a country called Syria, but no longer a country called Assyria.

I've read that a large proportion of the population of Syria is Arab, with a section of the country that is predominantly Kurdish.

From what I understand, at one time there was an Assyrian NATIONALITY and an Assyrian ETHNICITY. People who were citizens of Assyria were of Assyrian nationality, and, from what I understand, people of Assyrian nationality were predominantly of Assyrian ethnicity.

If there is no longer a country called Assyria, there can no longer be an Assyrian nationality. But, I've read that there is still an Assyrian ethnicity, and no, I am NOT confusing Assyrian with Syrian.

Syria and Assyria are both mentioned in the Bible, so I think that learning about this subject will help me understand parts of the Bible better.

Believe me, my Bible knowledge badly needs upgrading in many areas. I make NO effort to deny that.
