View Full Version : Our goals for 2008, 2009
Thirst

It would be cool if perhaps this could get a sticky...
What are your goals for 2008? I refuse to call them "New Year's Resolutions." My wife and I are going to write ours out and give each other a copy and hold each other accountable. I thought the same could be applied here. We're guys, we need goals. So, I'll post mine first. Feel free to do the same, and what is important about this thread is accountability.
Here goes:
1) Read the Bible with the time that God gives me. I'm busy as is most everyone else, but I pray that God gives me a newfound love for His word and that I use my time wisely so that I can be strengthened.
2) Find a church, get plugged in and find new friends. This is so important for me, because I am new to this area. I need more fellowship.
3) Take my wife on a date at least once every two weeks.
4) Get in better shape -- honoring the body that God has given me. I love sports and I have no excuse to not be fit.
5) Nurture the friendships that I have so that I can be a witness for Christ. I have lost touch with some of my friends... I want to rebuild relationships through Christ.
6) Witness to my family. The Lord gives us a spirit of power, not timidity.
I'll probably add more to this later... I hope I get some guys here who want to participate! God bless.

All my goals are going to be GOD oriented. WHY? Because that's how it should be for everyone here. So, here's my goals as you call them, Thirst:
1. Spend more time with the LORD, and, read the WORD for at least 15 minutes, twice a day.
2. Get my life figured out according to His will, and, plan.
3. Lose an undisclosed amount of weight. Why undisclosed? Because I am not going to set a target. So, Toolman, and, all you weight loss buffs, please help me. I am going to use 2 five lb weights, along, with the Tony Little Gazelle. If you know nothing about that machine, google Tony Little Gazelle, and, you can read more.
Thank You, and, these are my three goals that I want to pursue for right now. I hope to be able to keep them going. Now, we just need to be nice to each other when we are accounting each other. GOD Bless you as you venture into the new year.

Mind, soul and body are one unit.
Mind & soul- Make sure to spend about an hour a day in study and prayer, and get plugged in better at church.
Body- Eat better, do cals, light weights and bike my usual 1k+ miles

Personal priorities.
Why not 30 minutes, twice a day, instead of 15?
???
Why not 60?
Why not every minute?
???
???????????
As to losing weight - that is simply vanity.
Pure and simple.
As is 'Getting my life figured out...' ...

Let me ask you this then: How would you word my goals, then? I( could say get His life He made for me figured out. And, do 30 minutes twice a day in prayer, ccripture, and, other GOD related things. I could do 15 minutes of reading a selected chapter, and, 15 minutes of prayer about what the chapter means, and, other misc. prayers. Hpw dpes that sound?
And, is wanting to make myself feel better by losing weight a crime? I don't think so. It is something that all people should think about if they need to lose a certain amount of weight. I don't think it is in vain at all. I just want to feel better about the way I look. That shouldn't be a problem, should it? No, I don't think so.

loosing weight is far from simple vanity. To some it may be, to others it could be their best chance to "remain among the living". I personally commend you for doing this! It is tough and I'm working on it too. Changing my diet, the quantity I eat and excercise more. I just bought a bike trainer, to hook up my mountain bike to and can "ride" whenever I want in the comfort of my freezing garage.
I don't know what I'm going to work on. It changes all the time.
The big one is that I want to be a better husband and father. I'm not bad at either, but I would like to be better. I need to go to the Christian book store and look for books on those subjects.

Thanks, T. I appreciate your words of wisdom. I didn't think it was vanity at all. I watch that show on VH1 called Celeberity Fit Club, and, I see what they have to go through. I may look online for some weight loss tips, as well as tips from you guys. When i go to my appointment on the 9th, I will let my doctor know that I have started to lose some weight.
This losing weight can be a dangerous thing, if you don't know what you're doing. So, I will take this real slow. It's gonna be hard for the first month with me the way I eat, but, after that, it will be easier, and, I can push my plate away after the first helping.

All I can really suggest is this....
Talk to your doctor. Ask him if he can recommend a dietician. Change your diet including the size of your portions. (This is the hardest thing to do, IMO)
Also, talk to the guys in the healty living forum, up above. They know what they're doing.

I plan to loose some weight over the next few months. I gave it till my birthday to reach 200 pounds so I have 3 months to loose 23 pounds. As Big T said, this is for health reason not to mention I really like the jeans I can't wear right now
Hey Dana, 2 pounds a week is supposed to be a healthy rate of weight loss. Initially it might be a little faster but once it levels out about 2 pounds per week is good.
If there isn't a weight loss related thread in Living Health then start one and some good tips will be sent your way.

Sometimes I have a mouth like a sailor and when I get going I really get going. So my goal is to stop cussing period before my child is born so it doesn’t have to hear filth come out of my immature mouth. I have done pretty good so far, hahaha I know it’s only the 3rd but I haven’t had a slip yet.

1. Get my spiritual life right again. -- Getting back into the Word, truly getting involved in my church finally. God has blessed me with the opportunity to be a co-leader of a class starting this spring. I will be teaching a men's class on the book "Wild At Heart". Im really excited about this opportunity. But most of all just get my life on track and in line with what God's will is for my life and learn to accept whatever He allows me to have, be and do.
2. Strengthen the relationship with my son. -- It has been a hard 12 months for him. He has had to go through a nasty divorce between his mother and I and now he has two families. His mother is expecting a child with her new husband and my wife and I are trying to build our family and involving him in that as much as joint custody will allow. My relationship with him for the first five years of his life was shaky at best at times. But now Im truly going to put forth a concerted effort to love and raise him in a Godly way. Also I want to show him God's love through my actions. I want him to see the God that daddy prays to.
3. Work on laying a strong foundation for my marriage. God has blessed me with the opportunity of marrying my best friend. He has given me a second chance at being a husband and this time Im (with Him showing me how) not going to disappoint Him. Im going to be a good lover, friend, listener......everything that Im supposed to be to her. She deserves so much more then I am able to offer. So Im going to do everything I can to make sure she gets the absolute best I can possibly give to her.
4. Try to maintain the weight loss that I had while in Afghanistan. -- Simply put...... I want to be around when my son graduates. Im not in any way in health danger. But I want to be someone that my wife is proud to be around. I love the fact that I can wear jeans i havent worn in 5 years and would like to keep that up.

Finish writing that pesky book of mine. I've got a good jump start on it, but then I hop on myspace, facebook, and bibleforums and get sidetracked and dont finish it.
Oh, and to continue touring as a storyteller/speaker. in fact, I'm currently working on a tour with a band and we have lots of dates left open, especially during the weekdays. PM me or email me if you want more info ;)
The rest of the goals are the typical stuff...

1. Learn what it means to be a godly husband according to God's word and not according to society's categories of what a man is supposed to be like. Even though my wife and I have a good relationship and have only been married for roughly a year-and-a-half, I would love for it to get even better. I guess I am really struggling with fear when it comes to taking control of our finances because I made some bad mistakes back when I was single and don't want to repeat them now that I am married. It was nothing horrible; I just trusted someone to handle my finances who ended up being everything other than trustworthy, and he took advantage of the situation by cheating me out of a great deal of money. This was a number of years ago now, and I have forgiven him, but that experience, plus a few others, have made me apprehensive about my ability to handle money. Plus, my wife has shared with me that her attempting to handle our finances causes her a great deal of stress. So, I guess I would ask that you guys would pray for me that I would be able (with God's help, of course) to step up to the plate and handle our finances in a godly and responsible manner.
2. I want to get more involved in our church. My wife and I have signed up to be nursery volunteers for this coming Sunday, and for some reason, that makes me extremely apprehensive. It is only going to be a once-a-month kind of thing, and seems to require only a minimum amount of effort on our part, AND we will be dealing with the oldest age-group in the nursery (two to three-year-olds and they will be potty-trained). None of that knowlege, however, has alleviated my apprehension one little bit. I'm not sure exactly why that is. After all, both my wife and I want to have kids of our own some day soon (we don't have any yet and this is the first marriage for both of us), so this would be good practice. I guess I am scared that I will screw up in a major way and ualterably scar someone else's kid for life. I know something like that is HIGHLY unlikely, but I tend to be the kind of person who worries about the worse-case scenario. So, I guess you guys could pray that God would encourage me, and that He would help me to remember that children are incredibly resilient, and that my wife will be right there to help me in case I need it.
3. Find a second part-time job, or a full-time job to replace the part-time job I have right now. Both my wife and myself are cashiers at a store similar to Walmart called Meijer, and while we have both been there for a number of years and, to a large extent, enjoy our jobs, we both went to college and know that God has bigger plans for the both of us than just "getting by" for the rest of our working lives at Meijer. My wife has bachelor's degree in social work, and I am an internship away from my bachelor's degree in psychology. Please be praying that God would open doors of opportunity so that we can find just the right job for each of us.
4. Get my writing career off the ground. I am in the research phase of a nonfiction book about how Christians are called to be peacemakers, and haven't worked on it in at least a couple of weeks. I also have a number of poems, short stories and essays I would like to work on and get published, as well as a science fiction/fantasy novel on the back burner, so to speak. I have been writing, off and on, since I was a little kid, and would like to have it be a bigger part of my life, as well as a possible source of income. So, please be praying God gives me the courage, inspiration, wisdom and discipline to get back into my writing, and that it would be a blessing to many people both inside and outside the body of Christ.
Whew! I warned you guys in my post on the Introduction section that I could get long-winded, and that's exactly what happened. I could share a lot more, but I don't want to overwhelm anybody. Anyways, I hope this list gives you guys a good idea of the kinds of things I want to work on (with God's help) this year. God bless you all, and have a great day in the Lord!
Yours in Christ,
Benjamin

Well, here are a few of my Christian based goals for this year and the rest of my life:
-To not only memorize the 10 Commandments with love, but to also memorize them w/ care in order, practically "tattooing" them into my memory.
-To everyday continue to be a "fisher for the souls of men."
-Ignore those who don't care about and/or obey the 10 Commandments, yet try not to be a hypocrite and/or mean to them at the same time.
-Continue to share my love, life, personality, money, knowledge and music with fellow brothers, sisters and those to hopefully become "born again."
-Continue to buy more great christian music on iTunes and elsewhere.
...and the list goes on!:pp

If you want or need any help to REALLY become a Godly (family) man then you should try the Men's Fraternity just like I did.It was such a great, rewarding experience where you'll be able to meet new friends, join fun groups and learn alot about yourself and the rest of your family (son, daughter, wife, father, etc...) while becoming a man thru God and His word. You can either buy the DVDs and book(s) yourself online or you can meet up in groups such as college campuses or a local church like I did.
P.S. It's kinda funny (but also a great fact) that this series can and also has helped out people in prison. It is hosted by Robert Lewis.
Check out the Men's Fraternity website right here:
