I was just wondering if any of you woman have tried Macafem. It does not contain hormones.
It is for women going through menopause. I am very leary of taking anything with Black Cohosh; and this does not have any in it.
I ordered only one month supply, to see how it will work. But I was wondering if any of you have taken it, and how you did do on it.
http://www.macafem.com/macafem-faq.htm
Would appreciate a good conversation amongst you all about some of your symptons and what helped you. I am not talking debating, just a good conversation.
I do not have the night sweats, but I do get very warm. I am generally always very cold person.
I have a problem sleeping through the whole night, along with restless legs, and cannot get comfortable.
I have hair loss in my hairbrush, and when washing my hair, alot in the drain.
I can get very sad inside for no reason at all. I just want to cry. I don't. But I want to. I never have those mood swings where I am very angry tho.
Periods are either hard or not at all.
I get up and do what I need to do and then some, but seem to be very fatigued all the time.
Weight gain and cannot lose it!
Thanks
Sherrie

Sherrie, I have never heard of this.
I am having some of the same symptoms as you. I am not taking anything except prescription progesterone. My body makes too much unopposed estrogen so when I have bleeding, it goes on for a month or more - at least it did last year at this time. I don't know how things are now...I had bleeding after two endometrial biopsies and then every three months a little spotting, but I get full on hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, insomnia and tiredness.
Let us know how it goes with this.

I haven't heard of this either, but I'd be curious to know how it works.
I am not in menopause yet, but I am having some of the symptoms.
Sherrie, I'm curious to know why you don't want to take Black Cohosh?
I know it helps with the hot flashes.
I hope the Macafem works.

I am not taking anything except prescription progesterone.
Macafem is not suppose to have any chemical hormones in it at all. Non-progesterone.
I think the worse of it all for me right now is the insomnia, and odd cycles. You would think that after years of having a period every month, that menopause; pre or post, would be a piece of cake. My kids think I have experienced the tough mood swings for several yeas now, but I don't think so. ;)
I tried an over the counter estrogen medication once before; and I did not care for it. It caused me to have severe abdominal cramping. I just cannot do black cohosh. But I do want to try a natural approach to this men-o-pause!

Jeanne
Black cohosh can cause headaches and stomach discomfort. In clinical trials comparing the effects of the herb and those of estrogens, a low number of side effects were reported, such as headaches, gastric complaints, heaviness in the legs, and weight problems.

This seems to be what I have experienced. Not to say you would.

I wonder what part of the endocrine system macafem supports. I haven't heard of it before you mentioned it and can't find really anything on it to support that it has been researched very well.
If you use it please don't hesitate to let us all know (fanning face), how it works (eyes drooping) with hot flashes (turning the fan on).
ok really though, I am doing good on black cohosh and progesterone, but if I miss at all I have horrible sweats every 1/2 hr...yuck.
I don't have the bleeding or headaches, but its only been a few weeks.

You may want to try a search on "...a small Andean root belonging to the radish family. The nutritious Macafem (Lepedium Meyenii) grows in the high Andean plateaus of Peru at altitudes as high as 14,500 feet above sea level. "

I am going in later this month for my yearly and want to be tested to see if I am going into early menopause--my husband, sister, father, mother, nephews all have been begging me to. Something about mood swings and crying at radio commercials, or for no reason really. I will not take hormones, my mom developed breast cancer from taking them, so I will be watching this thread for updates.

Wow, Sherrie! I have every one of your symptoms. I'm 52 years old and haven't been to a doctor in 3 years. Please let me know if the Macafem works and how it works for you. Thanks. :)

I am waiting for the pills from ups as I write. They should be here tomorrow.
createdforwishy...Yeah, I am sick to death of cleaning hair out of drains. I thought if I got my hair cut it would help. And they mistakenly cut it shorter....much shorter than I wanted. It still is a problem.
I just thought this would be a great place for us to post our mishaps with menopause, and some things that might have worked for some, and some things that had no affect.
Kind of help each other out. I am sure with the things that are going on with me, a pill is not going to be the only answer. Lifestyles have to change alittle. What helped and what did not........How about weight control......Hygene...sleeping and eating habits........

Well, I know my mom battled with fatigue quite a bit, ut she found wearing a pedometer and making sure she took 10,000 steps per day helped a bit with that. In doing so it also helped with her weight. She also has osteopenia so she has to take calcium every day but cannot take the perscription stuff, so she drinks a glass of milk every day. She eats just about the same thing everyday as well, oatmeal for breakfast, small snacks of fruit and veggies and a slim fast bar, then chicken or fish with veggies for dinner. This helped her weight and her energy level. I am truly trying to get to walking to see if it helps with my fatigue, but I just have a hard tie finding the energy:blush:

I have had a cold flash, which was very wierd since I am very hot natured. My husband thought the world had stopped turning on it's axis when I started piling covers on the bed.
I also have had hot flashes, but they only affected the right side of my body, like I was sitting next to a fire. I thought I was having an all over hot flash once starting at my rear, but my mom just had her seat warmer on in the car:lol::lol:

there is not one research that says black cohosh causes cancer that I have found. It is widely used by us midwives. It does have a highr success rate for menopausal symptom cures.
I was saying that the macafem only has one site that supports it and there isn't much research out there except by that one group.
o man cold flashes are horrible. I get so hot then freeze.

My DH is always complaining about finding my hair strands E V E R Y W H E R E and I don't know what to do. I have hip-length hair.
My hair has ALWAYS grown fast, so it falls out a lot, esp in the shower. I use a rubber strainer that fits over the drain to catch most of my hair, which is mid-back length. I usually have to clean it off twice before I finish my shower, but it sure beats having the drains clogged all the time. :)

cnw; I am not arguing with you or anyone. I always sense a bit of sharpness with you when posting to me, and I do not understand why. Some people can take some things and others cannot. Black Cohosh has been known to cause tissue damage in the breast area in some women. My Mother and Grandmother had breast cancer; and they died from cancer even tho they did have the surgeries. It was suggested by their physcian, if they tried to use herbs, or natural remedies, for them to not use anything with black cohosh in it,and since I have a history of the breast cancer in my family for me not to take it.

My reason's as well. And Black Cohosh is not good for this (breast CA) also!
I didn't know this, and I have a family history of it in my immediate family too. Thanks for the info.
Do you know if plant estrogen is dangerous too? My sisters have stated pre-menopause, and one of them is taking Estroven or something OTC like that.

No; I do not know if it does. Might check around on the internet. See what researches have been done on it. Or check that company out , and see what their reseach came up with. It would be interesting to know.

Sherrie,
Thanks for the info on Black Cohosh. I also have a family history of breast cancer on my mom's side (after surgery as well). My dear aunt died at only 55 with it. Again, let me know how the macafem works with you.

I did not mean to sound that way Sherri, I have done a lot of research on Black Cohosh and know that MD's have said many things that are not tested by researech and because it is one of my sources of study, I think it is improtant for women not to be led astray by false information when it comes to medical truths. Actually research says exactly the oposite. It is said it may lower your chances of bc.
I know many many people who take this after breast cancer and before and have not had a problem with bc.
I am sorry your family has this heriditary issue. I understand your concern.
I will say again, there is not enough information on this new drug to establish that it too wont cause breast cancer and that was my original concern.
on forums it is easy to take others posts as personal, I assure you nothing I have ever said has been directed towards you specifically.

That's a good report....I hope we can keep this thread going. There seems to be quite a few of us going through similar things.
My gynecologist took me off progesterone last week to see how things go. I had been on it for a year. The first thing I noticed is that I am not sweating as much or retaining fluid as much (these are know side effects of the drug I was on). Now we will see if I resume having periods or if the big M is in place.

Well, I cried at a picture in a catalogue today, my feet are swollen, my head hurts, I am exhausted physically all the time, and my moods swing more than my kids on their swingset. I am going to the doctor Monday and hopefully she can help me figure out if it is the big one or if I am just going crazy.

awwww...SethElijah....what we need is one big party and get it all out! Wouldn't that be so nice if thats all you had to do! We could pass out wigs on their fake heads, kleenex, little personal fans, our comfy pillows, and something for bloating and headaches! I know your wondering what the wigs would be for...well...for pulling hair when the mood arises!

I have not tried Macafem yet, but I have the information and I am considering trying it.
I am 42 yrs old and have been experiencing some crazy symptoms. I have only experienced night sweats about 2 or three times. My biggest problems are depression, fatigue, sleeping, memory lapses, mood swings, thinning hair, irritability, headaches, breast tenderness, lack of interest and motivation. Since I had a partial hysterectomy, I no longer have a cycle.
Anyone who has tried it please let me know if they have received any relief.

God's Own - I'm going through exactly the same thing after a hysterectomy leaving my ovaries 2 years ago. I coud've written your post myself. In my case it's exacerbated by work stress.
My symptoms are manageable and I'm not currently taking anything for them. I don't appreciate the insomnia - 6 hours is a good night for me, but I've been like that for years. I believe I'm still ovulating because every once in a while I get that abdominal 'ping' with 5 minutes of nausea, but as I have PCOS, who knows. I have the deskfan permanently on at work because of the sweats. The memory lapses are more concerning; I can look at a list of number references and just not see what I'm looking for until someone points it out. I've had a lot of headaches recently, some lasting for days, but I've put it down to our weird weather and the low pressure.
We have breast cancer in my female line so I'm reluctant to consider the HRT route. If things get much worse, I will put myself back on agnus castus to see how that goes; it always worked well for evening things out before. I think my problem is more likely to be unopposed oestrogen, so I won't be adding more plant oestrogen into the mix unless a blood profile shows it's low. I've tried progesterone cream which did nothing, so for the moment it's 'wait and see.'

Well I have alot of your symptons. Sleeping is my big problem and so is hair thinning. But I have noticed a change since taking it. Still got hair in the drain, but nothing like it was. Like I said in an above post, not near as sad for no reason at all either. My breast tenderness is only certain times of the month, and when it is; it's very painful.

Sherrie I can't thank you enough for posting all those symptoms in a list and I hope you don't mind me sharing on here with you lovely ladies. All of you have helped me so much. My summer just gone my hair clogged our drains like you wouldn't believe . Now I know why! I'm so thankful I have very, very thick hair, I was beginning to think I was going to go bald:eek::eek: I was :pray::pray: for winter to hurry up and come, believing that it was something to do with the season, but when winter came it only slowed down gradually, but I'm grateful that it did slow down :D.
You see, I'm only 42. My early onset menopause began at 38 years of age, so my doctor and I have had to find very alternative ways around all the symptoms because there's no way I could go near HRT, I wasn't old enough. So if I may share what we came up with to bend all the rules to get around the symptoms to keep me sane, so to speak, and trust me I have to keep this routine up, I can't miss any of the natural or the meds or the symptoms return!! Ugh!! Well actually before I go there I do have one lot of symptoms I don't control and that is the body temperature. In winter - which we currently are experiencing I am colder than everyone else, yes, I asked and it's normal when you've got menopause to get colder, here I was thinking that because I was HOTTER in summer I'd be like a heater in winter:lol: The first time this happened to me (the first winter I experienced it) I was  Now doesn't phase me, I just
Anyhow, here goes my personal solutions - Okay:blush: Had to have IUD to stop excessive bleeding. Basically when it started I went from having a normal cycle to bleeding non stop for weeks at a time. These new ones have a coating of oestrogen to help stop the bleeding. 2. I take the pill - Norimin - nonstop, as extra hormone 3. I take natural menopause tablet morning and night by Natures Way. I checked and it has 1g of Black Cohosh, sorry girls.
4.Walk each day as possible.
I know what I do probably won't help anyone else because it's not all natural but if I don't do all of it I have all the symptoms return and it's too uncomfortable. I don't want to do HRT if I can avoid it either, so I'm looking forward to hearing how you go with this product Sherrie because I hadn't heard of it before either.
Wishing you all a great week, blessings and dreams ~ Linda

Linda; It is important to know I am not a Dr., and the symptoms we share here are just that. They are our own experiences. It is probably best if you seek the advice of your Dr., and please tell him of your hair loss, it could be something more serious. I would not want to be responsibe for you not getting the medical treatment you need.
This is just a common ground for sharing with each other.

I think Linda had already gone to the doctor, she said her doctor helped her.
I went to mine yesterday---she said it probably was not the change because my cycle was getting heavier but was still on schedule and because I am only 37. I asked her what do I do if it continues to get heavier cause I could bleed to death it felt like sometimes. She said to track it and get back with her at my next appt and perhaps we could cauterize my uterus:o..okee dokee then. She also gave me Cymbalta to keep me from losing my mind with the mood swings.

Good Morning! Yes, I did go to my doctor and still do, thanks for your concern Sherrie and you don't have to worry I appreciate what this forum is about. I forgot to mention another couple of things as well yesterday. I also went to a naturopath in the early days and had acupuncture when I needed it. I think I had at least three lots of 4-5 sessions over a period of time when the symptoms would flare up and I couldn't bare it any more. Most especially the memory loss and the sleep and hot flushes.
In regards to my hair, last summer was the worst I've experienced it in relation to the falling out, but I didn't worry because my hairdresser had told me I actually had new growth coming through at my age!! She was amazed, and like I said I already have such thick hair. So much so that everytime I go to a different hairdresser they comment on how thick it is. I promise if I clog too many drains this coming summer I'll check with the doctor, but I'm not overly worried.
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but my nails have gone to the dogs this year. I've never had a problem with them before this, but my thumb nails have continually split down the middle all year no matter how much I've filed and tried to take care of them. So I've got a multi vitamin with calcium to see if this will help. Any other suggestions will be gratefully received as my index finger has started to split now as well.
Seth, may I suggest you keep a note of your symptoms truly because you sound exactly how I started, at nearly the same age, with the heavy bleeding. I had a blood test and my oestrogen level was so borderline and I'm so fortunate to have been with my g.p. for nearly two decades so he could work with me to work it all out. The iud is a Mirena brand, sorry, if it's too much information, but I had to have it to stop the bleeding, I didn't want the surgery. One of my girlfriends has had a hysterectomy, she's the same age as me, and she's always telling me to get one, but I'd rather not have surgery as I hate going to hospital. I have nothing against the procedure, just the place.:D
 you all have a glorious day in His name ~ Linda

I have been in a premenopause state for some time, hmph, it may even be full blown but fairly mild in comparison to my sister who is 3 years older than me.
I get hot flashes, but usually only before my period is due and during my period.
I seem to skip periods or start early, and I used to have super heavy ones, but that was resolved after my little procedure last year.
My feet and hands get super hot, even near painfully hot.
I have the occassional mood swing, but usually just a little crying for no apparent reason.
I also tend to cry a bit more easily than before, like over commercials and such.
I can't sleep well, and it doesn't matter if I do, I have to get up to go pee in the middle of the night at least once, usually twice, and lately 3 times.
Gain weight quite a bit easier than before, in fact, I used to lose weight when I ate!:D Not anymore.:(
I have to say, the more I make out this list, it sounds an awful lot like my pregnancy did with my daughter.
You know, sometimes I wonder if I am in full blown menopause, simply because I'm one of those women who never really had issues like most women during "that time of the month". I rarely had cramps, was always regular, never never never moody, or weepy or anything...little cramping if at all, in fact, if it weren't for the blood, I wouldn't have known I was on my period most times.:spin:
The fact that I am experiencing these things is strange for me and my gyno suggested that it's only premenopause. I say HAH!! It's full blown, it has to be, because I don't experience these things.
And then there's my sister, who has always had the crazy mood swing periods and cramps, well, she always had difficult periods, and her menopause is absolutely awful! She sweats like someone dumped water over her head, and that's in the middle of the afternoon when she gets a hot flash! Her mood swings are psychotic, weight gain, and what not.
Though I've been told by my gyno to try this stuff that has rose hips and flax seed oil and some other ingredient in it...I took this before when my hormones were wacked, about 10 years ago. It was expensive and I had to take it several times a day, but it did the trick.
Though I sure would like to know how this new stuff works out for you Sherrie, so keep us up to date on it, because if this junk gets worse for me I will NEED to do something.
Oh, and I've heard that soy products, like soy milk is good for such things.
Check out the stuff that the Chinese use, they usually have all kinds of ancient natural remedies that they still use today. That's what I hear anyway.;)

Here's something to put a smile on your face - I once felt like doing a pregnancy test, even tho' I couldn't be pregnant as I was single, because the symptoms were driving me crazyl!!!!:o I had to talk myself out of the pregnancy test simply because I knew it couldn't be true, the facts were in front of me, but like you say, it makes you feel like one of your pregnancies!!!:o

Hi, i am from india. I came across your post while surfing for macafem. Would you share your experience with macafem. I am 47 years old, facing severe menopausal symptoms chief being hunger, anxiety, palpitations and fatigue. I have extreme hunger. My thyroid is normal. I thought i should try macafem since i have other perimenopausal symptoms. Would like to know how you have done on macafem and if you would recommend it to others. Any side effects that you think one might want to consider. Thanks in advance. Regards Pam.

So far it does seem to be alright. I do not see any major changes. I did notice I do not seem as tired or drained. Do not know if that is the pill working or not.
I did skip two cycles in a row, only to come back and have 4 weeks of the dreaded curse! While on the dreaded curse I elected on my own accord to stop taking the pills everyday. Now I am off again and will start taking them again.
I have also noticed I am not having any cramping, cold sweating around my mouth nose area, or strange aggravated moods. I have not been sad either. My sleeping is also alittle better. Legs have not hurt me either.
But the hunger thing...well I was hungry all the time. But now it seems I am full alot!
All I can suggest is reading the website for the pill, and take it from there. I am giving it a shot. If it does not work, then I will not be out alot of money. I can move on to something else.
My sister-in-law gets something from the doctor, that truely is doing no more for her than what I am doing.
Oh...And Pam welcome to the board!

I am new to these forums, never have much time to fool around online. But I have had such a problem with menapause, and now extremely sore breasts, that I began a little research and stumbled here. A blessing. I am looking for some help. My doctor wants to use anti-depressants to treat menapause, have tried a few with terrible outcomes. He does not believe in hormone replacements, says in the end I will still have to suffer though the storm. But my breasts are so sensative that it is hurting my marrage, combined with the mood swings, tiredness, lack of interest in most anything of interest to my husband. It is simply not fair to him, and he treis to understand, but as a man he is limited in that field. So I saw a report on the use of macafem, and of course plant estrogin as well. I felt the plant estrogin was out of the question, but also I certainly do not have money to poor out to a useless remedy and read through the posts. I was incouraged by what I read, and am going to try a one month supply to see if that helps. Certainly, as all of you know, prayer is needed as well. so I am asking that you all pray that this relieves my suffering. I can handle, as can my husband, the hot and cold flashes (yes I burn up, than I freeze), sleepless nights, hair falling out, and even the mood swings, because those are things that come and go, and I can certainly worn my husband of there arrival. But the constant breat pain is immpossible to work around. I had problems when I was in my late 20's, cut out caffine and the problem went away, but this time I am at a loss, as is my husband. I covet your prayers as I search for relief. When you cross yor arms and want to scream from the pain, it is over the top.

Hi - I am in the 6th year of my menopause, and am fortunate in that I don't experience mood swings at all. My hot flushes are always preceded by a cold flush. I don't take anything to relieve the flushes - mainly because I have had other medical conditions and am weary of trying anything. I just see that I drink plenty of cold liquids during a flush, and usually wear layered clothing which are easy to remove during a flush.

Dear Sister Kate,
Will be keeping you in prayer most definitely. Let us know how the Macafem goes for you, hope it is very helpful. I'm a bit confused how an antidepressant would help with menopause, unless he's trying to stabilise your mood? The pill would be a better option with oestrogen to help alleviate your symptoms - that's if you were wanting something medical of course. I hope the natural works out for you. I have both natural and medical and get relief only through having both of them. God bless you and keep you ~ Soulangel

I am taking macafem and have been on it for 4 weeks now. I am feeling alot better. I had depression, anxiety, mood swings crying for no reason, skipped periods, times feeling over tired, skip heart beats and so on. I will stay on it because how I feel. I am also on zoloft for depression and ativan for anxiety. Started cutting down in the ativan only on .125 mg and will gradually cut down on the zoloft only on 25 mg. Good reviews on it thats one reason I chose it. Also doesn't have block colash or red clover.

I too am going through menopause (I was in denial for about 4 years)
I happened to stumble across this discussion about Macafem after doing some research on the internet. What I found was that its a natural way of restoring estrogen and I am very curious if it works. Does anyone know where you can buy this? So far I have only found this available on line.
I read that to see real results you have to take it for at least three months. BrendaC you say this has been working for you? Any side effects? Thanks so much for having this discussion. Have a blessed day all.:D

Hi! I am new to this forum. Happened upon it when I was researching macafem. Imagine my surprise and delight to find all these posts and women in the same place that I have been for the last couple of years. I was hoping for an update from someone who tried the macafem?
Thanks!
Chris

Hi I am new to this, I haven't been to a doctor yet but I think I am going through the change, I am experiencing tenderness of the breast, bloating really bad feels like I am having a baby and it hurts cramping and burping cannot fit any of my clothes. Its just in the middle no weight gain anywhere else. I will feel flushed for a minute then it passes, sometimes even cold, always tired legs hurt, arms hurt and gas pains in my chest not sleeping well I was reading the post from Sherri and I was looking into getting Macafem, Sherri is there a store I can get it from like CVS, Rite Aid or something I could use it now. I have read alot about it
Thank you

I was just wondering if any of you woman have tried Macafem. It does not contain hormones.
It is for women going through menopause. I am very leary of taking anything with Black Cohosh; and this does not have any in it.
I ordered only one month supply, to see how it will work. But I was wondering if any of you have taken it, and how you did do on it.

Thanks
Sherrie
I am not familiar with Macafem but if it is a pharmaceutical I would personally avoid it. Emerita Progest & estrogen creams have worked great for me with no side effects - unless I overdo on the estrogen, then my breasts get tender. (I use 2/3 estrogen, 1/3 progesterone but everyone is different.) Other ladies here have tried the creams too.
Don't know if you are hypothyroid or not, but you are listing the symptoms, except for the periods one which may be related just to menopause. My case of hypothyroidism was initially missed by blood tests, as was the related adrenal issue. Those tests are not rocket science. I found the Stopthethyroidmadness site to be a wonderful blessing and help.
Praying for you to get the diagnosis and treatment (hopefully natural!) you need for what ails you. ;)
