James
(from the Fore word in my NKJV) “ Faith without works cannot be called faith. “Faith without works is dead”(2:28), and a dead faith is worse than no faith at all. Faith must work; it must produce; it must be visible. Verbal faith is not enough; mental faith is insufficient. Faith must be there, but it must be more. It must inspire action. Throughout his epistle to Jewish believers, James integrates true faith and everyday practical experience by stressing that true faith must manifest itself in works of faith.
Faith endures trials. Trials come and go, but a strong faith will face them head-on and develop endurance. Faith understands temptations. It will not allow us to consent to our lust and slide into Sin. Faith obeys the Word. It will not merely hear and not do. Faith produces doers. Faith harbours no prejudice. For James, faith and favouratism cannot coexist. Faith displays itself in works. Faith is more than mere words; it is more than knowledge; it is demonstrated by obedience; and it overtly responds to the promises of God. Faith controls the tongue. This small but immensely powerful part of the body must be held in check. Faith can do it. Faith acts wisely. It gives us the ability to choose wisdom that is heavenly and to shun wisdom that is earthly. Faith produces separation from the world and submission to God. It provides us with the ability to resist the Devil and humbly draw near to God. Finally, faith waits patiently for the coming of the Lord. Through trouble and trial it stifles complaining.
James 1
What did I learn of God? – Those who commit their lives to Him are His bondservants. He tests the faith of His people, which is designed to produce patience. He gives Wisdom to those who ask Him for it – if they trust Him to give it, and He knows they intend to act on what He says. He does not tempt anyone to Sin. All good Gifts come from Him. He is Glorified when His people visit orphans and widows who are in trouble, and not contaminated by the ‘world’.
What did I learn of Myself? – Do I regard myself as Christ’s slave? Do I regard trials with joy? Are the difficulties in my life stretching my faith and making me more patient? if so I am growing towards perfection. Am I aware that I always need the Lord’s wisdom? Do I know God will give me the Guidance I need, and wait for it? or get tired of waiting while doing nothing? or do something useful while I wait? Do I realise God is unlikely to Guide me unless He knows I am determined to do as He says? Do I accept my social position, whatever it may be? Am I faithful to the Lord inspite of temptations? which come about because of my desires and determine the quality of my commitment to Him. Every good thing in my life is a Gift from God. My anger will never produce God’s Righteousness; swift wrathful repartee does not Glorify Him. Have I rejected all the Lord regards as filth and evil in my life? Do I act on the Word of God with humility? The attitude of my heart will be revealed by what I say. Do I visit those in trouble? I will only be Blessed by the Word of God when I act on it. Do I transform temptations into triumphs by choosing to please God?
What did I praise God for? – His Grace.
What did I pray for? – that He will control my tongue and give me His Wisdom.
What does this say in one sentence? – profit from difficulties, have the right perspectives and act on God’s Word.
