I cannot stress this enough..if you find yourself suddenly having any changes in your mood or physical problems; check your medication!! Even if you have been on it awhile.

Last week I posted this on here: http://www.bibleforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=137372

I was having major anxiety ...sure from time to time I have anxiety attacks...almost always they can be traced to some medication I took..usually allergy medication (over the counter) like sudafed, or sudafed PE. Both will also mess up my blood sugar (I have low blood sugar problems). I can't take RX allergy meds as they tear up my stomach badly. Terrible stomach aches.

In the past I had terrible anxiety (now I wonder how much was caused by some meds I might have been taking). This past week it was like I had gone back in time 15 years ago and I just couldn't understand why. Yes I had tons to do and yes I felt overwhelmed but these things happen and I shouldn't have been freaking out like I was. Thank the Lord this didn't hit until after I had that job interview Monday!!

I have had nearly constant knots in my stomach from this anxiety...I have never had it just go on and on and on like this..usually if it happens its a one day thing then its gone. My thoughts have been racing...plus I got sick and though I had a stomach bug...apparently this medication can cause flu like symptoms...including fever, diarrhea, and nausea. So I could have been this medication that literally made me sick!

I had gone to the doctor a month ago to see about getting on a nasal spray for my allergies since I can't take pills. He rx Fluticasone...which has a steriod in it...I cannot handle steroids! They make me physically sick! I didn't know until a short while ago when I looked it up on the net.

http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/flu1182_2.htm

Fluticasone drug information

More common side effects may include:
Abdominal pain, aches and pains, agitation, aggression, anaphylactic reaction, back problems, bad taste in mouth, brittle bones, bronchitis, bruising, cataracts, congestion, cough, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, dry nose, eye problems, facial changes, fever, flu, headache, hives, hoarseness, indigestion, itching, loss of speech, mouth infection or swelling, nasal congestion, nasal irritation or burning, nasal sores, nausea, nosebleeds, rash, respiratory tract infection, runny nose, shortness of breath, sinus problems, sneezing, sore or irritated throat, stunted growth, swelling of the face and tongue, vomiting, weight gain, wheezing, worsening of asthma

Why should Fluticasone not be prescribed?

If you have ever had an allergic reaction to Flonase or similar steroid inhalants such as Flovent, you should not take this medication.

Flovent is not to be used to treat status asthmaticus or acute asthma attacks.

Under very rare circumstances Flovent Rotadisk may cause an anaphylactic reaction in people with a severe milk protein allergy.

What side effects can this medication cause? Return to top

Fluticasone may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

* headache
* stuffy or runny nose
* difficulty speaking
* sore or irritated throat
* painful white patches in the mouth or throat

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

* new or increased acne (pimples)
* easy bruising
* enlarged face and neck
* growth of hair on the face
* depression
* anxiety
* extreme tiredness
* muscle weakness
* irregular menstruation (periods)
* pink or purple stretch marks on the skin
* hives
* rash
* itching
* swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
* hoarseness
* difficulty breathing or swallowing
* chest pain or tightness
* cough
* shortness of breath
* red or fluid filled bumps on skin
* burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in arms or legs

Fluticasone may cause children to grow more slowly. There is not enough information to tell whether using fluticasone decreases the final height that children will reach when they stop growing. Your child's doctor will watch your child's growth carefully while your child is using fluticasone. Talk to your child's doctor about the risks of giving this medication to your child.

In rare cases, people who used fluticasone for a long time developed glaucoma or cataracts. Talk to your doctor about the risks of using fluticasone and how often you should have your eyes examined during your treatment.

Fluticasone may increase your risk of developing osteoporosis (a condition in which the bones become thin and weak and break easily). Talk to your doctor about the risks of using this medication.

Fluticasone may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while using this medication.

I was starting to have some pretty weird thinking going on too...like I felt like I lost myself...it was very strange! I almost did a post on here saying that too...that I lost myself! I have handled much more stressful situation then happened last week and are coming up again this week and I didn't freak out like this so I just couldn't figure out what was going on! I prayed and prayed and prayed for the Lord to help me and He finally showed me I needed to look into the nasal spray. I had originally printed out the list on it but got side tracked and never got around to read it. You would think by now with my senitive to medication (and Nate's) that would be the first thing I would check!! :B Now I have to wait for this to get out of my system...blah. I know you aren't suppose to suddenly stop medication, but this is one or twice a day...its not like I can slowly cut back on it. :rolleyes: Please pray this gets out of my system fast! So I can be myself again!!

thanks.

God bless

Funny, I am taking this for allergies AND being treated with Paxil for anxiety. I wonder if my doc thought about how it would affect my anxiety? Now, I will have to call and make an appointment........

Thanks! :hug:

Yes thank God! He has shown me other times when Nate or I are being affected by some medication. You would think I would learn by now to always check it!

The diarrhea is back...ugh! My stomach was doing better except for some slight nausea...then when I couldn't get to sleep last night ..I got up to eat a snack cause my blood sugar had gone low..I used that nasal spray because I forgot to use it before I went to bed...:B Then during the night twice I woke up sweating like crazy. I thought maybe I was sweating out this sickness I had and be fine today...ugh. I did a search and this can also mess up diabetics blood sugar. While I am not diabetic, I do get low blood sugar. I also got a cortisone shot in my hand a couple of weeks ago which put more of this into my system! I had forgotten the name of the nasal spray so this doctor had no idea I was already getting a steroid in my system. :( I didn't know it was a steroid! These sites say to be very careful about getting more of this into your system too! :(

I had put Nate on Claritin two years ago (its over the counter now...loratab I think is the genetic name) hoping that would help his allergies. It can also increase anxiety and cause other problems. During Christmas break last year he freaked out over something and his anxiety triggered some aggressive behavior I hadn't seen in years. It was pretty bad. That summer he had also had alot of problems with his anxiety and his dr had to increase his buspar several times! Then the Lord put it in my head to check this medication...I did a search and sure enough..it also increases anxiety and can cause aggressive behavior in children. :B He was also gaining alot of weight. While I did find that can also be a side effect, its not a common one. Since stopping it his anxiety calmed down and he has steadily been losing weight. He was up to 127 last March I think his doctor said and he is down to 118 now. He is five foot two and a half. (a half an inch taller then me! lol).

I just couldn't figure out why he was gaining so much weight! He used to be skinny as a stick. He still needs to lose some more...or grow taller but at least he is losing naturally. I was cutting out alot of things I thought he was eating that was causing this. Even switched his kolaide from using sugar to sweeten (a safe kind) but nothing seemed to help. I think it was last spring sometime the Lord helped me think this all through and I sat down and went back in time of when I started him on that allergy medication and was able to track his increase in anxiety and weight gain to a few months after he started that medication! So you bet I got him off of it!

Lo-Lo Funny, I am taking this for allergies AND being treated with Paxil for anxiety. I wonder if my doc thought about how it would affect my anxiety? Now, I will have to call and make an appointment........

Thanks!

Yes do! You might need to stop the nasal spray and see if you even still need to take Paxil...or at least it can work without having to work against this. Also read the side affects of Paxil. All of these anti-anxiety/anti-depressants can cause anxiety and depression...though usually they helped..but they can cause what they are suppose to be helping! its crazy...

God bless

moonglow,
I'm glad you found out the cause of your symptoms. Medications can be so dangerous. Everyone responds differently to them.

Take good care,
Jeanne:hug:

Thanks. Yea my son and I tend to always have the side effects with little of the benefits it seems...:rolleyes: I saw this also says not to use if you are allergic to milk...which I am! :B Its no wonder my poor stomach is such a mess..:( The last time I had a bowl of ice cream many years ago..it didn't stay down very long...:cool:

moonglow,
A few years ago the dr. gave me some muscle relaxers to take for the sciatica I was experiencing. She warned me that they would "knock me out". Do you know that they had the opposite affect? I was hyper and barely slept for 2 days!
OTOH, my sister was prescribed the same med and took only half a pill, yet walked around in a fog.
You just never know how your body will handle meds.

wow...bet you stopped that medication! I have taken muscle relaxants before ...I took them at bedtime and it took half the next day to 'wake up' ...didn't like that affect at all! :rolleyes: My mom is like you..takes something that should make her sleepy but has the opposite effect for some reason..

I have to take a specific medicine to replace hormones that are absent in my body due to an encrocrine disorder, and I've noticed that I can react very strangely even to different brands of the same stuff. Recently, I had a prescription filled and they switched it for the store's brand, which I guess is common practise. They didn't even ask me if that would be acceptable. I took it, and got really foggy feeling "out of it" as well as lethargic and unfocussed. After a few days of assuming I was coming down with a cold, I asked my mom about it and she suggested checking the label on the meds. Turns out, I need the specific brand or else I get really hazy and such. Strange how much of an effect some of these drugs have! On rare occasions when I'm taken Benadryl I've practically passed out. Once I slept for twenty hours straight. No one could get me to say anything or get up. Luckily it was over a weekend and I didn't have to be anyplace, I could never have functioned. Scary!

Wow that is scary! Good thing your mom thought to have you check that out! I wish we didn't have to take medications at all....but I realize for many its life saving!

Moonglow, I'm glad you found out what was making you feel so rotten! Yikes. Get better soon! :)

I'm that way with one pill I take. There are several varieties of it on the market, but I can only take this one specific one, or else my stomach'll act up so badly, and the nausea will hit so badly, that I won't be able to leave home during the day. Weird. Ever since I started taking the 'right brand', I've been just fine.

Glad you found out what was wrong!

I had a similar revelation with a food additive (Nutrasweet). My memory was shot, when I had a near-photographic memory in high school. I thought I was getting early onset Alzheimer's in my 20's. I was scared to death.

After praying for help, I did some research on the internet and found that some people were having memory problems from Diet Coke. I decided to test it out myself, and my memory came back in a weekend. I'm fine now.

It's horrible to think that you're going to go crazy or losing your memory, but a great feeling knowing what is causing it and that you can fix it. :-)

moonglow, your discovery of what the problem was is surely an answer to prayer. Have thought of you since your note in my reps and did pray. I sure can relate to how some med's can affect us..have that problem myself with some. :help:

Hope the allergy is better too. :pray:

hugs for you and Nate, :hug:

All sweetens tear up my stomach and cause similar problems that I have been having...I try to check anything new I eat or drink just to avoid those sweetens!

The doctor doesn't think it was the nasal spray...he thinks I had a virus or even food poisoning...I don't know..I still stopped it and the aleve I take for back pain (can cause all sorts of stomach problems) and the other nasal spray I was using...all of these can also cause anxiety too! ugh! I thought gee...if I didn't have all this junk in my system all the time I might be normal! :lol: Other then my eyes bothering me some (allergies) I haven't had too many allergy problems...I need to vaccum but no energy for that right now!
My stomach is doing better...just still so run down and tired mostly.

Thanks wiseoldowl...:) and coffeecat (I stopped the coffee too until my stomach settles down and gets back to normal).

God bless

It's encouraging to hear that I'm not the only one who has severe reactions to medications like this. I've had so many problems over the last couple of years (emotionally) and found that alot of it has been due to various medications. The problem now is that I don't know what to take for my allergies that won't make me irritable, anxious or depressed. For the last 2-3 years my family and friends all wondered why every fall I don't act like myself. From September to October or November I suddenly turn into a raving lunatic it seems. But as it turns out, that's ALWAYS when I start taking allergy medication. It's really frustrating. Even sudafed causes extreme anxiety for me and that is one of the mildest, non-prescription allergy drugs there is. GRRRR!

You need to get Dr. Doris Rapp's books...the one I have is called , "Is this your child?" but she also covers cases that include teenagers and adults and there is this one story about a person that gets seriously depressed every spring..even suicidal. It turned out it was due to allergies! (not the medication that I can recall but just the allergies.)

There are natural treatments for allergies too that you might check into...but one of the best is the nasal rinse...yes it sounds gross and disgusting and is no fun at all but it cleans out the sinuses and gets rid of all the junk (pollen, dirt, dust, etc) you have been breathing in and flushes it out. Helps prevent sinuses infections too. You can just get the salt water nasal spray but that doesn't really rinse out the sinuses. They sell these in the stores now where they first aide stuff (I think that is where I have seen it in the Dillion stores)

here is one article on it:http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7108546

One thing because of this I rarely get a sinus infection or head cold anymore....maybe once a year...if I did it more often I am sure I would benefit from it more but I hate doing it....:rolleyes: Even it if really helps...I just hate doing it...blech.

God bless
