View Full Version : Need Advice: What should I do with my life?

I've been going through a lot lately and you can read about it in the Breaking Chains forum below, but I also struggle with knowing what to do with my life.

Please pray that I get guidance in this issue. I have no idea what to major in and I am in college.

I love to sing and worship God so much and i have since I was 6, (22 now) and I know God wants me to keep music at the forefront of my life, but above all to grow closer to Him and to help others when I can. But that doesn't tell me what to major in.

The problem is I hate school. I cannot find an ounce of motivation for school right now. I hate classes and I've started skipping them. When I do go I can barely stand it.

I had a full time job I actually enjoyed and when it was over I got to go home and relax or do whatever. But school requires hours spent in and outside of class, and since I am not sure what I should major in, it makes it feel like I am stuck in school forever. I know what I want to do for my life (worship God) but not major in.

It does not help that that rapture seems to be imminent and that I feel Jesus could return literally at any time. When I compare life to eternity most everything fades away and just seems pointless. What should I do??

My heart goes out to you, but one thing you must realize - God has given you something - music. Do you think maybe He's trying to make you realize that music might be your ministry? It could be teaching music, playing music, writing music .... the possibilities are pretty endless. God certainly desires that we grow closer to Him during our lifetime. He also desires to see us take the talent/gift He has given us and using it for good. You mention in your post that you want to keep worship and music in the forefront and also help others when you can. Have you given any thought to Christian counseling or youth ministry? You seem to have a heart for service. Just go with it. Is is absolutely necessary that you choose a major right now? Maybe a season of general study would help clear your head and allow you to see what direction God is leading you. Sometime when stress is overwhelming, a season of "rest" is the best thing.

I teach a Sunday School class of 8-12 yr. old kids. We've been studying about the different "pictures" of God. A couple weeks ago we were talking about using the talents that God gives us. It doesn't always mean that we are doing something that is exclusively Christian, but something that serves good for people. For example: A design engineer creates a plan for a skyscraper. Is this a Christian project? Maybe not. But it will serve to help people. I guess what I'm getting at is that our talents may serve a need that isn't necessarily Christian, but doing good, not evil. But no matter what you do, do it as unto the Lord.

Pray about all this - I believe that God will show you what direction you should take. And one way to know - try it! If it's not right for you, then you'll see that and you can change your major to something else.

Wouldn't it just be easy if God would just "SHOUT" to us: "Do this or Do that!" Unfortunately, He doesn't work that way. He gives us talents and abilities, and then allows us to experiment and find the thing that pleases God and sometimes even us.

I'll be praying for you - that you'll make your choices with confidence that God will show you exactly what He wants you to do.

Remember: God's will never leads us where His grace cannot keep us.

God Bless.

I would recommended taking a break from school right now if you don't know what you want to major in. Continue working and researching differnt careers that appeal to you. Prehaps a career in a music ministry would suit you. Speak with people already in that job and ask them for advice. Ask what type of degree or degrees you would need for that position, how much time it takes up, responsibilities for that position extra.
College is an expensive undertaking, and if you are floundering it's time to figure out what you want to do before taking anymore classes.
Make sure you pray to God before making any serious decisions. He will lead the way.

Have you considered a major in music? There are lots of Christian universities that offer this.
