View Full Version : How much have we been forgiven?

I have started this new thread because I did not want to derail the thread on OSAS.
Luke 7:41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
Luke 7:42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
Luke 7:43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
Luke 7:47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
It would seem that our depth of love for God, is measured by the amount of debt we have been forgiven.
A very quick testimony:
I was saved at a very young age (11 years old), in that I knew the presence of the Lord upon me. I knew and felt His love and His light experientially. I had no Christian background whatsoever, except we celebrated Christmas and Easter. None of my family, friends or neighbours were church goers.
I had a 'promising' start in that I was hungry and thirsty for God. I bought a bible, found a church and attended meetings, got involved in outreach. After a couple of years our house, and the area which I lived was demolished, and we moved to another area. It was a new development, and had very few shops and no Church. I was not allowed to travel on my own, so no Church = no food. For a number of years I became a smouldering wick.
In hindsight, I guess the thing I missed out on was, not knowing sin. I knew I had done a lot of wrongs, but I felt that in general, I was not too bad a person.
Two things that God reveals to us; Who He is, and who we are.
We very much need to know of His Love, Grace, Mercy etc:, but we also very much need to know His Holiness, Righteousness and Justice. The more we look into His Holiness the more we see His absolute abhorrence of sin. The more we see His absolute abhorrence of sin, (even the spot and stain) the more we see the depth of His Love, Grace, and Mercy towards us. The more we know we have been forgiven, the more we love. The more we love, the more we have been changed into His likeness.

There's a scripture~~ I don't know where it is off hand~~about forgiving your bro/sis 7 times 70 which is 490 times 'in a day.And that's alot of sinning & forgiving in a day!!!
I don't believe a number is given for the forgiveness of our sins toward our God.One reason when we are saved we become a new creature in Christ and we should have no desire to sin because we should be living in the spirit and not in the flesh.God says that all man will fall. But we repent for our sin even after we are saved.Sin cuts off our relationship with God,so we must always try and stay pure in Him,so when we meet our Lord He will finish His transformation in a twinkle of an eye.:ppI hope this will help.

Mat 18:21-22
(21) Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
(22) Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

In this scripture Luke7:41-43 in this parable from Jesus about the creditor who forgave both because neither had any money to pay~~~as with Jesus paying for our sins because we too could do nothing for our sins, only Jesus could through His blood.
He made no difference between our sins whether we had few or many.As with the two debtors--one owed 50 pence(money) or 500 pence (money). The creditor also forgave their debits.
Luke 7:47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

Your right......Personally, I was forgiven much and I love God "much"
But also, just one sin is much and much love comes from it.

In general....that is not uncommon to think "well I'm not that bad~ I seen worse.Yes, we all at one time or another let that thought go through our mind which is a thought of letting our mind control us, so that we wouldn't look at it as sinning.

In order for you to know that you are forgiven is having faith in Jesus Christ for what He did for you.
