View Full Version : Here's a dumb question, why call it coffee cake when their is no coffee in it?

I am trying to figure out if any caffeine is in coffee cake or not...from what I found on the net it doesn't appear to be...so why call it coffee cake? :confused
The reason I am trying to find out is last night Nate just could not get to sleep. I finally asked him if he ate or drank anything when he was at a friend's house and he said yea this one boy had given him some coffee cake he made himself but said their was no caffeine in it. Well something sure was keeping him from getting to sleep! He didn't get to sleep until about 10;30 I think...his bedtime is 9 on school nights...though by the time he brushes his teeth and talks for awhile its closer to 9:30. So anyway I am just trying to figure out if this coffee cake kept him awake or not...does anyone know?
Thanks.
God bless

For a start, there's no such thing as a dumb question. ;)
My...guess....to the answer is that maybe it's the 'colour' of coffee rather than actual coffee content...but that's just my guess.

You eat it with coffee:P

I think it's called coffee cake because it's usually eaten with coffee.
No caffeine, but plenty of sugar. That may be his problem, depending on what time he ate it. If I have a lot of sugar too late, I have problems sleeping too.

I don't know about where you live moonglow but in New Zealand coffee cake does have coffee in it. I have made it plenty of times when I bake. It has 1 tablespoon of coffee in the recipe then you have another teaspoon or two of coffee in the icing - depending on how strong a coffee taste you want in the icing.
If Nate had some coffee cake at a friends house it is probably what kept him awake.

When in doubt, check Wikipedia!
The term coffee cake can refer to either of the following:
* A cake, often sponge cake, which is made with coffee or has a coffee flavour.
* A cake served with coffee or eaten at breakfast. Under this definition, a coffee cake does not necessarily contain coffee. Coffee cakes are typically flavored with cinnamon, nuts, and fruits. Blueberries are also a common fruit to add as an ingredient to this dessert, and one might hear the phrase "blueberry coffee cake". These cakes sometimes have a crumbly or crumb topping called Streusel.
So, apparently they're both out there, but in my experience, I've never eaten or heard of a recipe with coffee. I'm going with Nebula on this one. I'd blame the sugar. ;)

I agree!!! That's always been the burning question in my mind since the very first time I heard of and tried "coffee" cake. I sure was looking forward to that coffee flavor and it wasn't there, so I asked my mom the very same question. Of course I was just a kid, but the question is still there. I mean, who says you HAVE to have it with coffee, it isn't even cake really....more like a....a....pastry.:hmm:

You ladies are funny sometimes...;) I enjoyed just reading the comments on here..lol. Well I read probably a dozen receipts and found not one with coffee in it! That is why I asked! Plus this boy said he made it himself. Surprising some of the boys around here actually know how to make some things... (they must have good moms!).. :pp
I didn't think of the sugar... I bet that was it since this boy promised Nate there was no coffee in it. That happened one other time...Nate has some sugar before bedtime and had problems sleeping but I can't remember what it was.
This is kind of a long story but I will shorten it...when Nate was little he was dx with food allergies and even juice had dyes in it he couldn't tolerant and he choked on water! ugh. He couldn't even drink milk...allergies. Anyway the only thing I found he could handle ok was koliade lemonade...and that is what he drinks the most of even now he isn't as bothered by these food allergies. Well the problem with this of course is the sugar in it (though milk and even soy milk which is what I use has sugar in it). Nate doesn't sit around drinking even soy milk though...anyway...quite some time ago I started getting a substitute sugar for it to cut down on his sugar intake since still trying to get him to drink plain water is difficult. Since then I notice if he has anything with sugar in it he can have problems sleeping...
I also notice he isn't nearly as hyper and he used to be with so much less sugar...! :hmm:
His preschool teacher once gave me a paper on research done by the sugar company saying studies show sugar does not make children hyper..that its just the parents imagination...yea right.
I had just totally forgotten about the other time he couldn't sleep until later after having a sugary snack...he must of forgotten too! Guess this will help us both remember! Thanks all!
(stupid name for a cake with no coffee in it if you ask me...lol).
God bless

This must be a Northern Hemisphere/Southern Hemisphere difference, because in Australia if it says Coffee Cake you can guarantee the recipe will have coffee in it i.e. - Ingredients
1 x 400g packet Traditional English Tea Cake mix
3/4 cup ground hazelnuts
3 eggs
80g softened butter, chopped
1/3 cup (80ml) milk
1/4 cup (60ml) strong black coffee
300ml thickened cream
So, for someone like me who does not drink coffee and hates the flavour of coffee, I do not ever touch any slice, cake or whatever that has the word coffee attached to it in our country because of this. So, really this is a handy thing for us all to remember in our worldly travels.......

This is very interesting, because my South African chef at work just made a coffee cake yesterday, and an Australian customer was in and asked what was in it, and she'd made it with coffee, which she was glad to hear. I'd never heard of a coffee cake actually having coffee in it before, which always confused me because of the name.

And so my question to all this is, when did we here in the North American drop the coffee? Or is it just us? Is anyone from the UK on here to tell us how it is over there? (And if you've already posted, please forgive my laziness. :))

Two reasons I never got into the coffee is one, I started drinking tea as a young kid because of course all of us basically have english background, and two when I became a teenager and saw everyone get addicted to caffeine, drinking copious quantities of it to stay awake to study for exams AND in order to get to like the stuff they had to begin by puttting in say six teaspoons of sugar!! I figured it wasn't worth it!!! Sometimes when my husband is making his coffee with his real coffee machine and the aroma is just divine I wish I had gotten to like coffee, but nah, I can live without the addiction, besides, now you all want my share I couldn't deprive you could I???????:spin::spin::spin::lol::lol:

Oh man, CoffeeCat...your cat is adorable.
So, I just googled "tea cake." Guess what I found...
It seems that every country has a different food that has been labeled "tea cake." Apparently, in North America, tea cake is basically a sugar cookie! What a wacky country we live in! Our coffee cake has no coffee in it and our tea cakes are really cookies!

And our culture here in North America IS weird....
- our coffeecake sometimes has coffee in it and sometimes doesn't (I do put coffee in)
- in Ontario we call them "sugar cookies", NOT teacakes... I've never actually used the word "teacake"..
- people in workplaces rarely get coffee on a coffee break because they're ALREADY sipping it through the day ;)

Yea we are weird...and the things we say don't mean what others think they mean! One time I bought an American slang dictionary...back when I was writing alot...just to double check the spelling on the slang words I used that were common words here but not listed in a regular dictionary! These slang dictionaries put out a new one every six months I think it is and still couldn't keep up! The other day I had to look up a word for my son that he is hearing alot ...I won't list the word because the real meaning is...well...its not a bad thing but not appropriate for a public message board....but anyway the NEW meaning of the word is something completely different now...means a stupid, airhead, jerk, type of thing...
So glad I have the internet now to keep up with these lovely word changing! I could never buy enough books to keep up...by the time they are in print they are outdated..
