What exactly is intercessory prayer? Does it involve praying with others? I'm trying to decide if this is something that I want to get involved in at my church, but I still struggle greatly in my own prayer life.

To intercede is to pray on behalf of someone else. Intercessory prayer in your church is most likely a prayer meeting where the people gather together to pray for needs that are made known to the group, and they probably pray for the church as a whole, the pastor, that sort of thing. To find out for certain you should call them and ask. Let them know you're new to the church and a new Christian, they won't mind explaining it to you.
Unless it is specifically billed as training for intercession, the time there would be in actual intercession. A great way to learn though, is just to attend and observe, and join in as you feel led to do so by the Spirit. Maybe you can ask them to pray for you, your dad, your whole family.

I belong to our intercessory prayer group at church. Ours is built on about 6 women and we pray about things that the Lord has brought to our attention during the week and whatever else the Holy Spirit brings to our spirits to pray for during the time we are together. We each take turns praying out loud what is placed on our hearts and spirit to pray for.
An intercessor intercedes on behalf of others, standing between Christ/God and man. It's having an intimate relationship with God and trusting wholeheartedly that He hears your prayers and will act according to His will. Many times an intercessor will feel an urge to pray for someone out of the blue and will stop whatever they are doing to pray. They pray for whatever the Holy Spirit brings to them...a person, a problem, the Church, the Pastor, the Nation, a war, a sickness, etc. Sometimes the prayer request may not be what God wants to happen at that time and that's why we always ask "if it be your will". It's trusting that God will handle a situation according to what is best. Many in the bible were intercessors...Moses, Daniel, David, Jeremiah, etc.
If you are having problems with your own prayer life, I would advise you to take care of that first. If it is difficult to motivate yourself to pray, then maybe intercessory prayer is not for you at this time only because the Holy Spirit calls intercessors to pray at a moments notice at times. This doesn't mean you should never become an intercessor, but you must have a strong person relationship with God and that includes having a good prayer life. Go to God and ask Him to help you in your personal prayer life.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my calling of being an intercessor :).

I don't think this class/meeting is for me right now after hearing what it's like. Especially considering that I don't have a good prayer life myself. But they have an intercessory prayer devotion that I may look into joining. It's for women only so that'd give me a chance to get to know some women in the church better.

May the HOLY SPIRIT lead you in all that you do!!!! Amen...just listen for HIS prompting, or feel that quickening in your spirit, and be obedient...
God love you.
