I've only ever heard of it in a video game I played as a child called "Harvest Moon". You played a young man that inherits a run down farm from his Grandfather. Your task is to spend the next three years (in-game time) turning the place into a prosperous ranch while doing what you can to help out the local town and improve relations with the villagers. You also get the chance to marry your pick of the local girls and start a family with her. During the game you have the chance to collect recipes to hang on your kitchen wall. One of these recipes was always "Miso Soup" and it was fairly easy to obtain. "What is this stuff?" I've always wondered... well?
