So when I shave with a razor, it feels like the hair is being ripped out. It really hurts. Do electric ravors stop the pain? I asked my brother but he said you cant get a clean shave using an electric razor. I need to be completely clean shaven for work. Ideas?:)

That usually only happens to me when I put off shaving longer than I should and my facial hair ends up growing out too much... If I shave sooner I end up not pulling out hair. So, shave sooner?

Try one of the battery operated razors. I use the Gillette M3Power razor, and it does make a very big difference.

And, you are using shaving cream, yes?

What razor are your using? The only time I get that is if my blade is getting dull.

Then again, even though I'm only 30, I do shave with an old school Safety Razor. It took me a while to find a blade/handle combo that worked for me... However, since I found that "magic combo," I don't think I could EVER go back to the blade of the day offering from Gillette for my face...

My head... The safety razor again is king, but that takes too long for daily maintenance, so i go with the Headblade / Sensor Excel combo.

I only have a painful experience when shaving if the blade is old and dull.

I have not bought new blades in over 3 years.
I still use the same 3 blades.

I don't shave every day. Every other, at most.
And I rotate them every time.

Granted, new blades would be a bit smoother. But a light touch will reduce nicks to almost nill.

So the trick is not to use a blade until it is 'worn out'.
The trick is to let the blades regain their sharpness.

In case you don't know, they are somewhat elastic. They will revert to their original state if left to rest for a time.
As long as the sharp edge is only bent, and not broken, it will straighten itself out by its own elastic properties.

In other words, the blades will revert to a sharp state from a dull - if you don't use them.

So, I shave every 2-3 days. And I use the next blade in the que.
And I still have a clean shave, using the same 3 blades, after 3 years.

How much money have I saved?

An electric razor may help you - although you won't get a shave that's quite as close as you will with a blade I'd defy anyone to tell the difference by looking at you. If your job involves having your face caressed people may tell the difference by the end of the day.

Another advantage of a half-decent electric razor is that at least some of them come with attachments for trimming longer hair. If you haven't shaved for a few days and your hair is a bit longer then using a razor is going to either hurt, or be very very slow (or maybe both). If you use the attachment it cuts the hair right back to being very short, so you can shave it without tugging.

You also need to lubricate your face. Most men will tell you to use shaving foam, personally I normally only use regular soap and warm water and it works fine for me. If you get a razor with a built-in aloe strip you should find it irritates your skin less.

Use a fresh razor and use a good gel shaving cream.
Preferably an aloe type of gel.

It's threads like this that remind me why I keep a full beard. Trimming is so much easier than shaving. :pp

For many years (decades really) I used an electric razor (norelco) then I got one of those sample 4 bladed razors in the mail. I have sensitive skin and a tough beard, a bad combination for sure, so I was skeptical. No more, I love the 4 blade system.

I shave in the morning with a straight razor and shave in the evening with my electric.

Should I invest in an expensive popular blade like a Mac or something?

The more expensive blades do shave better, and last longer...

Indeed. You usually get what you pay for when it comes to razors.

I have learned there are a few things in lfe that one should NEVER skimp on.

Toilet paper and razors top the list.

The Mach 3 is great!!!! Get it, it is worth it. I have facial hair that no electric razor can touch. I will look like I have a 5oclock shadow in minutes after using an electric. I only use the turbo mach 3

So I was going to get a non-disposable razor, but replacement blades cost 4 for 17.99! So I got Gillette Mac 3 disposable razors with Gillette sensitive skin gel.

Shave immediately after a shower -- keeping the beard wet with warm water is important -- shaving cream only serves to keep the beard wet -- if you run some warm/hot water in the basin, and keep splashing it on your face as you shave, it will work as well as shaving cream -- cream lets you know where your razor has been, without it, you must feel.

Whatever you get used to . . .

When I was in the army, there was an older, sleepy-eyed Mexican in our outfit who shaved dry every morning, and you could hear the rasp of his razor for 300 yards . . .

Back many years ago when my wife would bemoan the tribulations of "being a woman" that befell her (and other women) with some degree of regularity, I would often bravely (foolishly?) reply, "Yeah, well, what if you had to shave every day like we men do ?"

Totally agree, beards are just so much easier. Just trim every week or week and a half, and shave the neck with the trimmer every other day or so.

my hair grows so fast, I am constantly shaving, and it is to the point that it is annoying, I swear I grow an inch of hair a day, lol. they are a bit pricey but I might try a good electric razor, since standard disposable ones always leave me raw (I like a close, freakishly smooth shave).

In my experience, an electric never gets as close and smooth and a good straight razor.

I use the cheapest disposables I can find, and am OK shaving every other day usually. Not much to worry about here.

I'm 45 years old and i still haven't got this shaving lark right yet

When in my teens i suffered badly with acne and even now, i still have acne although nowhere near as bad. But where shaving is concerned, my skin still gives me problems and i go days without shaving. My wife hates this but i just get too sore if i try and shave daily.

Up until around 10 years ago, i would only shave with an electric razor but after rubbing my hand across my face, it felt like i hadn't shaved. I now use a mach 3 and gillete sensetive shaving gel, which seems a good combination. But i still cannot shave every day :(

I've been using a Braun rechargeable shaver for many years after using practically every other method of shaving known to man.
I now use the Braun Syncro system which will run you about $125.00 but for me I get the closest shave with it than any other shaver/razor offered.

I must be doing something wrong. The electric razor that i have is also the Braun Syncro system but when i use it never feels like a real close shave. Maybe i should persevere with it more and see how it goes.

I used to have the same problem till I started shaving in the shower. Walmart has a fog free mirror which I use in the shower. That made a huge difference.

I prefer to use the Daisy razors. They're pink so you have to be pretty secure in your manhood to use them. But I have hardly ever cut myself or had any painful results even after going a week or so without shaving. One of the things I've noticed is the lighter the stroke the less it pulls.

Of course I've been thinking of going old school and getting a straight razor. :hmm:

Once I was lighting the BBQ grill and got the closest shave of my life.

Not recommended unless you don't mind having your eye brows, eye lashes, internal nose hairs, mustache and a haircut all at the same time.

I have a braun electric shaver. Will only use it only when I have to use it. It is not a close shave at all.

I use the safety razor with the butterfly trap doors, the personna safety razor blades, along with edge tough beard or sensitive skin shaving cream. (a ten pack of double sided / double end blades are $1.69 at Wal-Mart) compared to those other blades that cost 3-4 dollars apiece.

With both my sensitive skin (I break out everytime I shave) and tough beard that comes out of my skin hard and 'porcupinish', I shave only once a week and I actually like the five day beard look Kurt Warner made so popular many years ago.

Because of my sensitive skin and tough beard that comes out hard and 'porcupinish', I have to beforehand wash my face and before applying the lather, get a washcloth really hot and put it on my beard and moustache and let it sit for a couple of minutes. This opens the skin pores up to take the shaving cream.

My sensitive skin and 'porcupinish' tough beard can dull a razor blade (both ends) quick to where I have to literally shave twice in one setting. I completely shave once, then open up the safety razor to flip the blade over to the other side, re-lather, and then shave again to get the close shave.

I was also taught by my father that most men get a closer shave early in the morning. For some reason with me, I get a better and closer shave in the early evening.
