I am getting this message: Invalid update control CTF file when I try to do an update on it. Its showing red with a exclamation point in it...usually when it does that I just right click and then click on update and that fixes it..now I am getting this message. I have no clue how to fix this and its not telling me how...
Thanks for any help!

I don't know what to tell you a bout it, but I was getting an error message with mine at one point. Somthing about unable to, or the update failed. I can't remember now.

Ok thanks..I might have to uninstall it then reinstall it again to fix the problem. It was doing fine so I don't know how this file could have gotten corrupted to start with....:hmm:

I am sorry, I wish I could help but I am computer illiterate most times.

I use AVG Free too. I think they are finally gunna stop supporting us with updates on the 18th. New free version is not real-time protection.

Oh they always say that..make it sound like they are stopping it but don't...I think they do that to pump up sales...all those having the free version panic and buy it... They have been doing that for years.
Don't mean to sound like I take them for granted though! Many of us just can't afford to buy this...

Don't mean to insult or anything like that.
But it sounds more like the only 'real time' protection that the new free version will have.
Is the 'real-time' that 7.5 (old) has.
What the new free will not have is new 'real-time' scans that the old did not have.
But the old scans will still be a part of the new, and be available in the free version.
And as far as I can tell that is the case ,as I have a computer at church that is running the new free version of AVG .

I'm running v7.5, and it has saved me several times - in real time.
The new v8.0 does real time if you get the paid version. The free one is good only for a scan of what already's on the drive.
I think that's what you are telling me - we are saying the same thing. I think. :)
When AVG gives out, I'll cough up $5 to upgrade my WebRoot SpySweeper to Virus protection.
OPPs I thought that was you, MoonGlow, but now it's too late to delete it. L.O.L.

lol...that was an AV a member made for all of us a couple of years ago so the whole board could be in prayer for miepie. Since she has gotten much worse lately I thought I better put it back on...so watch out for other members having the same AV too...especially the older members that all copied and saved this. I don't think this AV is on the general av for those that can't put their own on yet from their computers...not sure about that though...though I suppose someone could just right click on my av and save it to their computer then put it on as their own av...
Anyway...I am probably just going to have to uninstall it then reinstall it again..its an error in the file that does the daily updating so I can't get the latest protection for new viruses that come out...ugh...(probably a virus got in it to prevent it from doing that...lol) I did have it scan itself yesterday for a virus...but if its infected...could it find its own infection? :hmm:

Ok, hear is a clarification,
I use AVG 8.0 free daily.
It has all the real time virus abilities that 7.5 does.
What it doesn't have is the new spyware real time protection.
And several other scans that were just released with 8.0 .
But it has 90+% of what was in 7.5 free including the realtime that 7.5 free had.

Hello Everyone,
You will have to completely uninstall and reinstall or install 8.0. Also if you do any uninstall you should use something like cc cleaner to make sure all remnants of the previous programs are gone otherwise it can make the new installation not work properly.
You could also try another and in my opinion better free antivirus program that i switched to after similar problems with avg,the program is avast antivirus.
Hope this helps.

I installed 8 right over 7.5.
It uninstalled the old OK.
It DOES have a real-time shield, although my first scan went for over ten hours. (about 90gigs filled 60 free)
It found a few things lurking about - although nothing absolutely horrible.
It doesn't seem to update with addressing a prompt.
I'm real happy, though. :pp

AVG free 8 provides realtime anti virus and spyware protection.
To fix your error follow these steps:
1. Navigate to:
WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download
Vista: C:\ProgramData\avg8\update\download
2. Delete avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf.
Now try to update AVG again.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I finally just had to uninstall it and then reinstall it again...works fine now too. Since I did that other thread to adjust more memory for the virtual memory...it was taking hours ...many hours for it to run for some reason. I think the problem was it would start at one...my son comes home at 3:30 from school then gets on his online games which of course take alot of memory. Alot of time he would have to pause the antivirus because it would slow up his game...shoot I had to pause it alot cause it slows me up! ugh. Its just take too long to run! Trying to find two and half to three hours where no one is on here for it to run was impossible...I mean to set a certain time everyday. I would try to run it when I would leave to run errands or something, but I usually would just forget.
Even though it was doing better in not slowing us down on the net while running, once I transferred more memory to the virtual memory it was running five hours or more! That is just stupid for it to take so long.
So when I reinstalled it and set the time for it to run, I set it for midnight...I just don't shut it down when I go to bed. I almost always up in the middle of the night needing a snack for my low blood sugar, I just shut it down then. I checked to see how long its taking to run doing it this late and its doing much better...back to two hours and 45 minutes to get its scan done (which I still think it just way too long) but at least its not taking four or five hours now! I think with the internet off and no browsers or IM's running, those things aren't slowing it down like they were before.
God bless
