Can someone explain the difference to this granny. I thought iPod just denoted it's relation to Apple computer technology, aren't they both (iPod vs MP3) the same thing.

iPod is a trade name of a product [that plays MP3 files]

Thanks for the replies. :)
Seems they are the same thing basically. I was looking at an MP3 player for a Christmas present, which is why I asked. If iPod is a trade name, then likely the chargers and speakers associated with that name only work with iPods. I was wondered if they'd work with any MP3 player as well.
Forerunner, I saw a Sylvania 4 GB MP3 player that has video as well as games, calendar and scheduler with it. Looked like a good product with bonus'.

iPod's are a type of mp3 player that is specific to the apple corporation.
They play mp3's but they also have their own proprietary file format that only iPod's can run, known as AAC. Some iPod's can also play videos, usually in mpeg format. Some non-apple mp3 players can also play videos, also these are more often in .wmv format.
I have a Samsung Blackjack II, which is comparable to the iPhone but it is not a Apple product. It plays music and videos, as well as doing the calls and GPS stuff. However, it uses windows media player to play files, which is sometimes annoying. It also doesn't have as much space as the iPhone.

Once upon a time some sites that sold music for regular MP3 players made it so it couldn't be converted into the format for iPods. Of course, burning the song to a cd and reloading it worked, but it was a pain. I don't know if that's still the case.

then there's third party software that can change the default firmware of you particular mp3 player and this allows more features. such as the ability to play any music format including aac.

Apparently one needs to be somewhat tech savvy to operate these MP3 players as they do not give any info on downloading to the apparatus or in depth info on how the things work. Just a booklet with features and a small disk with a AVI converter program.
I'm beginning to wonder if their worth the trouble of having.
Does anyone know of a site where they give some basic operating instructions on these devices? Some 'schooling' would seem to be necessary for someone who's never used one before. :)

...but a little bird has told me I might be getting an iPod for my birthday...and the intent is that I use it while running.
Any recommendations on earphones?
(Again, apologies to Teke...)

I recommend you get earphones that work for you. IOW fit and comfort.
Hope you get the iPod (their like 80 GB's versus the popular 4GB's), that'd be so coool. :D
I finally did figure out how to download MP3's. The easiest app. was Musicmatch Jukebox, mainly because they have an external device button to click which then opens your device's window (there is even a tool button for the device itself). All you do from there is pull the music from your library of stored music (which is displayed in the library window) onto the device's window which then loads it onto the player.
I hope jpeg's are as easy as this to load.
Next I'm going to try and figure out the video feature. I wanted to put a slide show of pics with music on the player. Not sure if that will be a workable file for the player. The daughter this gift is for took some pics of a hot air balloon show here, which we then took and made a slide show with and added music, which we did with an online program. It's beautiful to see all those pics of colorful balloons with over the rainbow playing in the background. Aahhh....excellent indeed.
And a nifty gift too. :)

I got the 4th generation Nano (8Gb), with that odd but somehow appealing "coverflow" feature.
I don't know what the current youthful expression for "cool" is...but that's the general feeling I have about this little critter. I have about six hours worth of tuneage loaded thus far, and I've barely scratched the surface, in regards to memory.
Me like!

I've got a 3rd gen 8GB that also has the coverflow, and it is cool. That's still a word. Right? :P

I bought the SanDisk View and love the flexability of the product not being tied to bloated software like Zune Marketplace or iTunes.
I use my own mp3 tag software, and Windows explorer to drag and drop my mp3's into the player.

MP3 is a "media". Much like "record", "tape", and "8track", "CD". But instead of storing the music as grooves on a disc (record), or magnetic impressions on film (tape), its stored as data on a computer or mobile hard drive. Unlike previous storage medias, "an MP3" usually indicates one song, where "a record" or "a tape" usually means a whole collection.
An I-pod is a specific brand of player. Just like Whirlitzer was a specific brand of Juke-Box to play records, the iPod is a specific brand of MP3 Player to play MP3s.

The Zune is a very nice player. I loved it better than the iPod
I had actually decided to purchase the Zune (had the coupon in my hand to retrieve it) until I found out that you had to have Windows Marketplace to work the device (which was the same concept of iTunes that kept me away from iPod) where with my Sansa View, I can use any mpe ripper/encoder/tagger and use standard Windows Explorer to drag/drip - delete mp3's.
In fact, it is the more 'mechanically solid' feeling of all the mp3 players (even more mechanically solid feeling than my Sansa View) and the navigation and neat tactile switch that you drag your finger across was brilliant.
