Don't you really enjoy those old photos? I have some like that and many of them have no idea who they are, beyond ancestors, but the photos are so interesting with the clothes and homes. I do have a 1927 of Daytona Beach FL thats kinda cool, with all the old cars everywhere, all over the beach. There fun.

Yeah, I'm crazy about the antique photos. Those above are circa 1854, and I have a bunch more. It amazes me how the quality comes through,
over 100 yrs old!
Something about the strength of people in those days fascinates me.
I'll be watching for your 1927 shots:)

I am having some trouble getting a good scan, they kinda look ghostly, I figured it was the material the photos were made of?
I also tried scanning some tin photos ...., they looked awful, got any suggestions?
I think I have the paper material figured out by changing the settings on my scanner, but at a loss for the tin ones, reflection issue I guess.
The oldest I have dated, that I can recall, is 1863. It is possible some are older, but though my family apparently loved to have photos, we are notoriously unreliable at dating them and noting who is in the photo.

Cool pictures! Especially the one of you
How come in the thumbnail one, there is only one man? The rest are females? That is a great picture!

The other men-folk are working in the mines. The women & kids played criquet & he probably helped out. He may in fact have been the sheriff.
The best way to reproduce the older photos & tyntypes is to re-photograph them & save the best ones, unless you've got some mega-bucks equipment:)
If you have a digital camera with a media type card that will dowload to your computer, that's the best and easiest way. Then you can edit your pics with windows.

I never thought about taking a picture of a picture. :hmm:

Not the easiest thing in the world to do, but if you have digital, then you can experiment. The shops charge an arm and a leg for that stuff.
I've had some pictures repaired & copied (like pics of my mother) but its too expensive usually.
Sometimes a scanner can do amazing things, but as you already know, its a toss-up.
The reason you would photograph a photo is to get it into the computer.
Then you have the advantage of editing, somewhat.

I enjoy playing with the photos and have learned some about repairing them. I have a couple now that someone wants me to work on, one probably wont be a problem, the other is stuck to the glass of the frame it was in. It isnt an old photos, but stuck to the glass, any ideas on getting it off. Most of it is loose except one corner.

I don't know right off how to unstick a photo from glass but I do have a friend I can ask...if I can hunt him down. That's really quite an art you've got going!

Yeah, Hecla, Montana. A mining camp. Sometimes called Lion. Lion is actually the name of the hill.

I wish. I will put some together that I have worked on. I am being rather slow at getting the mounds and mounds of photos I had reloaded. I bet I had way in excess of a thousand photos easy.
But if I could get that photo off the glass and fix the two I have, would get me some brownie points.

Interesting. Thanks!
Those pictures look like pictures of the way it used to be around here.
I wonder if they might want to publish those pictures and the pictures of your ancestors in a book about Montana? Just a thought. That is a great picture of your ancestors.
I did notice the women all looked mad, tho. Maybe because they were having too much fun and then the sheriff showed up :)

I think its because they had to stand still for so long in order to get a good picture in those days. After awhile, one starts to ache.
Or it could be the sheriff might be in need of a little Irish Spring?
There have been many good publications which include these shots. I like these because my family has history there.

I'll do a little snoopin around about removing an old pic from glass. I know there is a chemical, just don't know what it is. Tomorrow, Lord willing, I'll stop in at one of the shops and ask them. I have to go by there any way.

Ok, but dont go to any extra trouble or making stops on my account because if it requires making a purchase, I'll just have to give the one back. Between the time and ink to reprint them plus buying a chemical, I'll be to deep in the hole and simply can't swing doing it.

Gotcha! I will ask though, because there is always a chance that a simple household chemical will do it. Just curious. Lord Bless!
