Hi guys. For the first time in my life I am growing a beard. My Mother would always complain about how slow it grows in, and nag me to shave. But now I can do it. I like it thus far. Any other bearded members here?

Yup, have had a full beard at all times for over two years now. It is just so much easier, I trim it every couple of weeks and that is about it.

I've had a beard since 1987.

To me there is something unnatural about regularly running a sharp metal blade across one's throat.

Also I'm to lazy to have to shave every day.

Had a goatee for the last 15-20 years, and grew a full beard back in June. Largely because I was away for nearly a month and couldn't be bothered to shave.

Jason, I think you've been reading my mind. I was just thinking of starting a beard thread on here as I was trimming mine this morning.

I've had my beard for a little over 2 years now, and am quite fond of it. I never did like shaving, plus I look like I'm about 16 when clean-shaven, so it's worked out pretty well for me. Plus, it makes a great bib while eating chili! :D

I would love to grow a beard my job doesn't permit beards. I really can't say if I'd like it since I am not allowed to have one. Once in a while, I grow a gotee when I'm on vacation or take a long weekend.

I've had a goatee for years. I didn't shave for a week in June while on a missions trip, and have kept the full beard since then. It's less work, and my wife likes it, so it's a pretty good deal all 'round.

It's funny to see other guys who made the goatee-to-beard transition for the same reason as me. I had actually grown a goatee out prior to the full beard and kept it for about 6 months. I got tired of shaving around it after a while, though, so didn't do anything for about a week. When I went into work the next week, several coworkers asked me if I was growing out the full beard. I figured, "why not?" so I just went with it. I gotta admit, shaving a neckline is a whole lot easier than trying to shave around a goatee!

Do you have kids? I don't. So being closer to "son" than I am to "father", let me just say THANKS!

I came home one time to my dad with his moustache shaved off. I had never seen him without one. So whenever he deigned to give me a lecture on something I couldn't help but think: "who the hec do you think you are? My dad?"

I have grown mine out and cut it off so many times…. How about the stages of growing the beard out. For me…

First you have the light itchy stage – slightly annoying

the sandpaper stage – great for itchy wrists

the Velcro stage - any and every long hair nearby gets caught in it

the second itchy stage when the hair is just long enough to curl back to the skin- extremely annoying

the stage the moustache is long enough to get in your mouth – great for leftovers

then when you can start twirling the ends of the moustache – more amusing than twirling your thumbs

I never made it to the next stage of being able to braid it….. :hmm:

I LIKE that! I've gotten to the second itchy stage and almost to the mustache to mouth stage. But then I shaved it because my whiskers were hooking my upper lip. It got really annoying.

I've had my beard for about 33 years now. Maybe more, depending on at what point peach fuzz crosses the line into whiskers. I shaved for a couple months during training for a ministry opportunity that never panned out. They thought I was "hiding behind it". I felt nekked, so I grew it right back. Used to be a nice reddish color, but now it's all grey, except for a couple of brownish streaks. I've always been two-toned. Red beard with brown hair, now grey with still (mostly) brown hair. It helps add substance to what is otherwise a bit of a weak chin.

Walstib, it's funny how critical of our own beards we can be, isn't it? I can grow a great set of sideburns, but I've never been too happy with my 'stache. It looks alright, but it's definitely my weakest point. Still, like the others have said, I know I wouldn't feel right without it now. :)

Yep.... I had two little patches on my cheeks that just in the last couple of years started to grow with the rest.

The biggest problem now is that it is getting closer to my eyes every year. 10 more years I might be able to dress up as the wolf man without a costume.... *Looking for a winking bearded smiley to post*

I currently sport the "goatee" thing that used to be called a van dyke. I think that's what most people are referring to these days when they say goatee. IOW, goatee plus mustache. Pretty much been sporting for 5 or 6 years now with a couple of breaks to let the skin air out I suppose. I've grown a couple of full blown beards in the distant past where I just didn't shave my face or neck at all with amazing results. Instead of bushing straight out like I expected it started to curl under and roll so that I wound up looking like a rather tall leprechaun. Guess it's me Irish blood!

Beards are a benefit in any weather. They insulate and warm in winter, and in summer, they protect the skin from sun and cool much like a radiator.

Perhaps that's why God blessed us men with beards.

Same here, 2.5 years and going strong. My boss went on a personal vendetta a while back against facial hair. To anyone willing to part with their beard, he offered to pay for a trip to the barber shop, as well as lunch afterward. I told him I'd do it for $100, but he never went for it. Probably just enough to make her say "You need to shave" when she gets back.

It usually takes 4-6 weeks to grow a full beard. After 10 days, you should be able to shave a neckline and have a pretty good "stubble beard," though.

I agree man...Last winter was my first with a beard, and I don't wanna spend another one without it.

After a year of having a full beard I got tired of the sides of it getting tufty so shaved back to a goatee.

That said, it was at the weekend and now I'm thinking of keeping a "stubble beard" but much shorter than before

Goatees are too much work, in my humble opinion. Besides, like Buck said, a good beard'll help keep your face from sunburning in the summertime. :D

Trouble with a beard is that it gets tufty and I end up pulling at it... a goatee is easier to maintain for me.

Just a look at my avatar will answer the question (yes that is me in the picture, though my hair is longer these days). If you look at the albums in my profile you will see that I also play Santa from time to time and do not need any fake beard, hair or stuffing. I used to have a set of mutton chops (big and bushy with just a bit of my chin shaved) but when I got my old job they wanted me to look a bit more "normal" so I grew it into a full beard (my mustach is waxed into a handlebar). My wife has never seen me clean shaven (in spite of the fact that my mom keeps nagging me to shave it off). My wife has seen pictures of me sans beard and hates them.

I had to shave my chin because of a ingrown hair or a blackhead of some kind. First time in 15 years since I have done this.I'm waiting impaitently for it to grow back.:B

I've seen brutha CW in person. He has quite an impressive set of facial hair-especially the mustache!

While both my dad and step-dad are able to grow full beards and have had them for many years, the best I am able to do is the mustache-goatee combination. For some reason, I'm not able to grow very much hair at all up on my cheeks. Maybe not enough testosterone in my system. Anyways, any time I do try to grow my facial hair out, my wife grimaces and says something to the effect of, "What the heck do you think you are doing?" She prefers me clean-shaven. It's not that I don't look bad with facial hair; she just doesn't like to kiss me when I have whiskers. She says they irritate her face too much, and it makes her not want to kiss me as much. Also, she says facial hair makes me look too old. The weird thing is (and I'm not tooting my own horn here) that I actually look younger than I am. Whenever people are first starting to get to know me, and either me or my wife (most likely my wife, since she is the more sociable one of the two of us) asks the person to guess how old I am, they consistently guess between 5 and 10 years younger than I actually am. Of course, it doesn't help that I've gained a lot more gray hairs than I used to have due to stress.

Anyways, I said all of that to say this: If anyone here has any tips/suggestions/comments/etc. for guys, like myself, who have trouble growing facial hair on their cheeks, please feel free to pass them on. I did just shave today, after going for three or four does without, but I'm thinking about trying to grow my beard out again. Of course, it is summer, so I have that working against me, but we'll see what happens. God bless, and I'll keep you guys posted.

Yours in Christ,

Benjamin

I'm afraid that if the beard won't grow there isn't much you can do. For quite a while all I wore was a gotee because there 2 spots that wouldn't grow (it grows there now but the hair there is dark while the rest of my beard is gray). I could grow sideburns and a gotee but there was a strip on eather side that was about 1/2 inch wide that was bare. Back then my hair was dark but my beard was bright red.

When my older brother used to court his girlfriends, he'd used my name, sometimes it was a good thing and sometimes bad but as soon as i was able, that was in 1982 i grew a beard so his girlfriends could distinguish between us two, only shaved it off twice since then and that was due for operation purposes.
Must say, never heard of so many different names for beards before.
The photo was taken 2 years ago, it is now totally white.

Some faces were not meant to be covered with beards. Others, like mine, don't look right without beards.

If I don't trim my beard, I look pretty ragged, where other guys get by with full volume beards.

I notice some fellars can grow just a spot below the bottom lip, above the chin, and look great. And partial, or full Van Dykes, and Manchus are in vogue these days.

Faces with sharp, angular features, such as unique chins etc, IMO, should not be hidden with beards.

Well, I did the best I could, but I just could not grow a full beard. I went for at least a couple of months without shaving, and while I did have a decent mustache and goatee, the hairs on my cheeks were pretty sparse. There were some there, and they did grow out while I wasn't shaving, but there was just too much space in between them to make for a full beard. I even scratched my face multiple times a day with the ends of my fingers (I chew my fingernails, so they don't stick out past the ends of my fingers), but nothing worked. So, for a while, I stuck with just the mustache and goatee combo. Then, I shaved it all off and am currently clean-shaven. Oh, well. Maybe I'll try again this fall when it gets colder.

I'm going to grow (not because I want one) but because I'm getting relocated from my job so I won't see the girl I am crazy about anymore. I just stopped caring about my personal appearance.

I have navigated to a beard recently, it used to be a goatee. I keep it relatively trimmed. I tried letting it all grow out but it is far to itchy and hard to get used to. Plus, the Charles Manson, Lincoln comments from friends...the Jesus ones are okay but I am FAR worthy to be called Him.

LOL, I'm the one dressed in red. The boy on my right is the son of one of my coworkers. He never goes to anyone but family but he came and sat on Santa's lap and it was his own idea. I don't think he speaks much english (or at least didnt' then, so I used the universal sign asking if he wanted to come sit on my lap and he came.

Hi guys. For the first time in my life I am growing a beard. My Mother would always complain about how slow it grows in, and nag me to shave. But now I can do it. I like it thus far. Any other bearded members here?

Yep! I don't plan on ever trimming my beard again. Been growing for almost 4 1/2 years. Check out my avatar, that's me last year. My signature pic was taken earlier this year, I think in either March or April?

:hmm:

Joe

I can almost braid my beard! Maybe a couple more years!

For a while, when my hair was still dark, I used that die that was specially made for beards. It wasn't bad but didn't last as long as I would like. It may have been my beard. I do trim mine from time to time, more to shape it than to shorten it.

Now that I don't have to wear a beard net,I'm going to see how long I can grow it. I don't have one of those super thick fast growing beards, but it should be plenty thick to keep the winter cold off my face.Who knows,I might like it long! I've never had a long one before.I'd like to let grow a year just to see what it looks like.

I sometimes think it's funny Because my hair is black but my beared is almost bright red. Especially in the sun.

I was at a St. Patrick's Day party last year, where they were giving away big green hats. My beard has a reddish tint as well, so combined with the green hat, I looked disturbingly similar to a leprechaun. A 6'2" leprechaun, that is....
