Thirst
Dec 3rd 2008, 08:21 AM
Okay, so I know we are not to store up treasures for ourselves on earth. That's not what this thread is about. This is a man's forum, which involves manly things. I'm talking about our stuff here. Hobbies, collections, the things we own.

I'll start.

Living Situation

I live in a one-bedroom apartment with my wife. We have been married for nearly 15 months now. We're just starting out and we will look into buying a house soon if the Lord permits. Our apartment is cozy and nice, yet kind of small - but then again, it's just the two of us here. No kids yet!

Car(s)

I have a 1997 Toyota Camry that is in great mechanical shape, though things on the outside are starting to fall apart. I absolutely love that car though. Great gas mileage, which you can't beat.

I also have a 2003 Chevy Silverado (1500 LS) pick-up. I absolutely love that as well. It is in immaculate condition and only has 50K miles on it. To me, it looks way better than the new models that GM is currently putting out.

Computer(s)

Right now, we have an HP Pavilion. Very nice computer. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor - 2.5 GHz, 3 GB of memory, 22-inch flat-screen monitor. It does the job for us nicely.

Other Stuff

X-Box 360
iPod
The new Motorola Razr phone
George Foreman grill

...and lots of other nonsequential stuff.

Although I don't think anyone would disagree with Buckshot, the OP title did say stuff and I wouldn't consider Buckshot's list to just be stuff.:)

In the spirit of the thread.
I have piles of HO model railroad equipment currently boxed with nowhere to set up (currently anyway).

52" HDTV + xbox 360 = Orendorf getting nothing productive accomplished.

I agree with Teddy on the legos, when I was a kid I could get lost with those for hours.

I currently live in a fairly OK-sized dorm quad with three roommates. Not all of the following things are here:

*Upright piano of a brand I cannot remember
*Pearl drum set (with sticks, etc.)
*Toshiba laptop (on which I am typing this)
*Approximately 350 CDs (although I haven't counted for a while; it could be more)
*Maybe...100 books?
*A chaotic and random assortment of music books, photocopied music, and sheet music from the Internet (some of it in binders, some not)
*15 or so DVDs
*Stereo (don't remember what brand)
*IPod for which I do not remember the model designation, but which I think is the first kind ever made (it used to be my girlfriend's)
*Digital camera (ibid)
*Verizon cell phone (I actually did not have a proper phone until this summer)
*Multiple pairs of headphones, because they ALWAYS STOP WORKING after three to six months (does anyone else have this problem?)

Yeah, generally my headphones don't last all that long. I've gone through 4 or 5 sets in the past couple years.

Mad props for use of the term "ibid"

Good list*. :)

(That was really all I wanted to say, but I got an error saying "The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 15 characters." So, here are the words i wrote so that I would have 15 more... thanks for reading this....)

Material possessions? Hm...

About 50 films on DVD. (DVDs in boxed-cases are kept separate from the regular plastic cases. They look upon them in pity.)
Laptop.
Digital drawing tablet.
Black fedora.
Zune MP3 player.
A wrist-watch with the numbers as words (i.e., "twelveonetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineteneleve n") rather than as numbers (i.e., "12, 1, 2, etc.")
Two silver rings that I designed and crafted of my own hand.

Mad props for use of the term "ibid"I don't understand why no one uses it in casual writing. It's so useful.

No, you see, that would make too much sense.

I am actually trying to get rid of stuff. I've spent my whole life accumulating it, and now that I am saved, I have no use for it.
It's amazingly freeing, to sell electronics as bargain basement prices and make somebodies Christmas wishes
come true.

I have a dead Alienware desktop computer which is waiting for a mount so I can attach a fan to cool the CPU.

I have an old HP laptop that has been all around the world and fought in 2 wars and is still struggling through life.

I recently purchased a new ASUS laptop for my wife on sale from Best Buy for an extremely good price. The laptop is very very very good, but came with Vista installed, and I haven't found the motivation necessazry to exorcise that demon yet.

I have a large collection of DVDs and videogames.

We are blessed with a large family: 4 dogs and 4 cats, the most recent being a 2 month oldfullbred English bulldog and a little stray cat that we adopted a couple of months ago.

We own our home and two vehicles.

I am pretty big into miniature wargaming and my models are scattered all over my computer room/office in various stages of assembly, priming, and painting.

What is the deal with Windows Vista? Everyone hates it, but I don't understand why. I mean, I know nothing about computers and I've never used a non-Windows operating system, so I could obviously be wrong, and probably am. So what's wrong with Vista?

markedward
Dec 13th 2008, 07:00 AM
I've used Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, and Vista, along with varying versions of Mac OS (including their newest one) and Unix.

Macs
My dad is a huge Windows fan, so I never had much experience with Mac until college. Up till then, people have always demonized Mac, and although I do find some of its mannerisms counter-intuitive (i.e., I think some of the Windows mannerisms are just plain better ideas), but having made extensive usage of Mac in college via art classes (especially the top-of-the-line Macs), it's not as bad as Windows-users often claim. Basically, their hatred boils down to stupid rivalries found in everything (Pepsi v. Coke, East v. West, McDonald's v. Burger King, etc.). It might not have as many options for games if you're into that sort of thing, but (the latest) Mac OS is actually a very good OS. The only real thing I just plain hate about Mac is their stupid marketing campaign. (You know... "Hello, I'm a Mac"?) Those commercials are so pompous and arrogant.

Windows
I'm a heavy user of both XP and Vista. I've used both for as long as they've each been out. Vista does things different than XP. Not worse. Just different. People become so engrained in their usage of a certain OS that any deviation is considered bad. (Hence, people engrained with Windows so-hate Mac and vice-versa.) Honestly. I'm a huge computer-user, both because my dad is a professional programmer and my brother is schooling in it. My design major requires intense computer-usage. But I'm not a programmer, nor am I a "power-user". So having used XP since it was released, switching to Vista when it was released, and using Vista and XP (and Mac) simultaneously during schooling, yet still being part of the non-computer-elite, I am, without any doubts, very qualified to give an objective opinion on the matter. XP made improvements upon Windows 2000, which had improved 98, and so on. Vista, on the other hand, continues the familiar OS of Windows, but instead of improving everything via upgrading, Vista improves some things by upgrade and improves other things by trying new methods. And it works just fine. Vista has a few problems, yes, but XP did too. Again, trying to improve things by being different isn't bad, it's just different. I like Vista, but I also like XP. (I like Linux, too, but I'm not "advanced" enough to understand how to use it beyond what stuff comes pre-installed with it.)

If we were to apply the same logic used on Vista on cell phones instead, the person would have to cell phones that rely on touch-screens. A touch screen, as opposed to tactile buttons, isn't a bad method to operate a cell phone. They're just different methods.

My laptop has Vista. After a year, I've had zero problems. Yeah, it is a RAM hog compared to XP, but I've got 3 gigs so it's all good.

I have a Dell notebook that is pretty much a paperweight, so I bought a MacBook and got a free iPod touch with it (teacher discount, I guess).

Two Yamaha keyboards, only one of which gets used, a Nintendo Wii (probably a mistake on my part), some assorted games, DVDs and player and a new 19 inch TV. A Selmer Paris series II alto saxophone. Various CD's and books of sorts... Oh, and an '07 Honda Civic, plus a nice diamond ring for the lady.

I actually got kinda sad making this list. Is that supposed to happen? I have too much stuff.

A drum set. 14"Snare,12" small tom, 13" large tom, 16"floor tom and 22"bass drum. Zildjian cymbals, 18" fast crash, 16"crash, 14" Hi Hat, 20" ride. DW 7000 double bass pedal. Remo pin strip heads on the batter side and Remo ambassadors on the resonant side. I use Evans heads on the bass drum.

It gets better because the Lord gave me the ability to keep time well enough to play along with the worship team at church on Sundays. It is what He wants me to do.

I also have a Black Lab named Bella, a house that I own, a Ford F150, and a Dodge Neon with 135,000 miles on the clock. Boring.....
