My camera does .mov files and then would not open them, after much frustration I downloaded something called VCL which will play the .mov format.
I have Window Media Player, dont ask what version, but it won't do .mov files. I found "Windows media player updates" (http://www.windows-media-player-updates.com/playingmovfilesviaWMP.html), free software, does anyone know if it is a good or bad thing to do.
Also, what can I do to make it where if I decided to upload the video, what can I do to get it into a format that will upload like on google or you tube and that is easily played by whoever?
And my final question, do any of the above questions make any sense.

.mov files are just quicktime movies. This is Apples proprietary format, similar to how wmv is windows.
you should be able to upload .mov directly into youtube. I am assuming Google is the same way. That is a very common format.
I'm not sure about upgrading WMP to play MOV. I haven't had much luck.

Ok, thank you. There was a link on the page I linked where Microsoft was selling an update, which sounded good but not being free was out of my price range.

For security reasons, don't download anything from that site you linked in your first post. Windows Media Players is made my Microsoft, so only Microsoft will provide free updates to their free player. The site you posted looks very suspicious.
Here is the official windows media player site - all legitimate upgrades/downloads will be here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx)

Thank you. I didn't down load from that site, I did download something called VLC, it was a media player. I hope it is ok and thus far is working as they said. I'll go check out microsoft's site. I did look there but I never found what I was hunting for. But I will go try again.

Yea, it seems to work ok, once I figured out what to click. And you can drag and drop the file and play it, just like it said. It also looks to have the ability to resave to other file types but I have not figured that out/tried yet. Do you want the VLC (http://files.uberdownloads.com/software/video-player/VLC.html)link? My computer scanned it and when you install, all the stuff it ask you about, like the Yahoo toolbar, just click cancel and then it goes to a window to just install the media player without any of the other stuff it ask about. I clicked cancel because I was not going to be forced into installing the other stuff, but it was not required, it was basically just asking, so click cancel and you should just get the VLC thingy. I hope.

I tried and tried to figure out how to save the .mov to another file type and all the codec, in and out put streaming whatever all that is, I never did figure it out, even if the software will do it.

Yup, VLC player is perfectly safe, and a very good player.
I'm still kinda confused as to what you want to do though...
You can upload .mov files to youtube, and you can play them on your computer with vlc player, or Apple's Quicktime player (also free), so are you trying to convert them to another format to be able to play them in windows media player? If yes, then there are programs that will convert, but I'm not sure if there are any that are free. Search download.com for "video converter" to get some examples.

I'm glad VLC is ok, whew.. It has been working fine. And yes, I wanted to convert to a WMP friendly format but I am managing ok. I will try searching that site you mentioned. I did actually upload one, or a couple really, to photobucket and then apparently photobucket changed the file type to .flv, or something like that. But they worked :pp
I can link the video if you want, all it is is 50 exciting seconds of my horse doing absolutely nothing at all. I tried to get them playing but they always stop when I walk outside and walk over to see what the camera is, (whats in my hand could be food ya know)

Yes, sites like youtube (and most video hosting sites nowadays) will automatically convert the video you upload into .flv (flash video format). This way, anyone with a decent enough computer and common web browser can view it. On the other hand, other (less universal) file formats such as .mov, .avi, .wmv, etc... can be issues if the person trying to view it doesn't have the right player.

Sure! :D

lol that's always the case. When my cat starts playing and running around the apartment, I grab my camera, and she stops playing right when she sees it in my hands. Guess animals are camera shy? ;)

Mostly they are eat machines that we really can't afford, but we love them.
