View Full Version : Please Help: Counting Hits

Sorry to bring up an old topic but browser issues are making me rethink...
If I have a web page that is just html or xml, is that only one hit when someone accesses that page? For example: http://grahamfriends.edoxy.com/Sermons/podcast.xml. I have 800+ hits to that page so far this month. Would that be construed as so many visits to that xml page?
I ask because there are no graphics or embedded mp3s. Yet that page loads differently in different browsers. With Chrome it's just text. Firefox adds an RSS graphic or two (though it's not in my xml coding). Does that throw off the count?

XML files display different in different browsers and if images are added to "prettify" the page, it's added by the browser and has nothing to do with your website. I'm pretty sure it's just 1 hit in all browsers.

That's what I thought. So, the Webalizer says the entire domain has 889 visits and that 834 of them are from that XML. Right?

Last month 2,200 of our 2,500 visits were to the audio sermons. Does this information also extrapolate for you that I should really be concentrating there. Does your spirit bear witness with my spirit? :D

Thank you, Brent. Once again.
The offer is still open. ;)

That xml file is also being accessed through iTunes. I assume that this would show as a hit but that whatever audio file is downloaded through iTunes would not show in Webalizer. Would my assumption be accurate?

The actual .mp3 (or whatever it is) would also show as a hit (if it was downloaded).

Okey-doke. Thx.
Then that means TONS (by my standards) are accessing the xml file but relatively few are actually downloading. Frankly, I had hoped all those podcast.xml hits indicated folks were listening via iTunes or some similar service. Sadly, evidently not the case.

Correct. Remember there are tons of automated services these days that find feeds and index them (hence the hits on the xml files) but very few actually download the actual content.
