I may be jumping the gun here a little early but given that many will be celebrating the goodness of the Lord on either Saturday or Sunday, I want to express to all my Canadian friends a Happy Thanksgiving Day on Monday Oct 12.
P.S....don't forget to watch the football game!

OK, just remember there are no dumb questions, but here it is anyway:
Is this football or soccer?
And which team has the prettiest colors....that's the one I'll cheer. ;)

Is this football or soccer?
Its a modified version of American Football, not soccer. Its distinct in the following ways....
- the field is 110 yards as opposed to 100
- Canadian end zones are deeper.
- 12 players per team instead of 11
- 3 downs instead of 4
- Canadian defenders must be a full yard from the line of scrimmage. (Americans can be 11 inches from the offensive line)
- No "fair catches" in CFL
- Canadian players can be in motion before the ball is snapped, so long as they don't pass the line of scrimmage
- 5 less seconds to play the ball from the last whistle (20 seconds)
- 1 time out per team per half.
- All plays stop the clock in the last 3 minutes of each half
(A more detailed explanation of these differences, and their tactical ramifications can be found at this wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Canadian_and_American_football))
The game is a little more open, and you'll see smaller more agile players, a lot more running, a wider variety of offensive and defensive options, and more late game come backs.

Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian brothers and sisters! :)
As one of my coworkers said tonight, "gobble gobble until you wobble!" in reference to how much food we ought to enjoy.
That aside, and football TOTALLY aside (although, a thank you goes to HisLeast for teaching me the differences between US/CAN football!)...
There's MUCH to be thankful for, every day. :D

What were the beginnings of Canadian Thanksgiving?
I think this is one of the few times when Wikipedia basically sums it up concisely: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_(Canada) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_%28Canada)
It started off as a thankful celebration of harvest, of safe travel, of return from illness.... and, honestly, Americans brought it over from the USA, too. :D

Yes, after I posted I thought....I could look that up and did...I found it interesting that there were several people in different time periods wanting to celebrate or to share in celebration.
It never ceases to amaze me that in every culture we find there is something innate in us that wants to praise and give thanks. :)
Thanks for sharing.

Amen, and exactly!
Our Creator placed a spirit of thanksgiving, of praise, in all of us... so that when we had hearts bursting with gratitude, we'd seek the One who gave us all we have. Isn't that amazing?
It's something I noticed most acutely when I was wrestling badly with faith years ago, and counted myself an agnostic.... when I felt joy, when I felt thankful, it was then that I honestly wished I knew Who to thank.

There is no Thanksgiving day in the Netherlands....... so I am glad that I know Who to thank...... on a daily basis......
I have often wondered who the atheists of America thank when they have thanksgiving day......
I hope your thanksgivingday was wonderful, that you had a nice filled belly and had a great time watching football!
Love you all lots,

Thanks Mieke, everyone!
I get to go out to my sister's farm for this one, go old school with a hay ride. Then with 8 brothers and sisters with kids you have enough people to fill the wagon. :)
Per CFL... at least we don't have two teams with the same name anymore.. whoever let that one slide for years. "Today it's the Roughriders vs the Roughriders!" I think I had some sort of great uncle on a Grey cup winning team back in 1910 something when they had a team in Sarnia.

I don't usually post about sermons I preach on this site but I thought that given the topic and that this is Thanksgiving Sunday I would at least post the following.
First, scripture from my morning message(s):
Psalm 100:4+5
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
5 For the LORD is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.
Then a powerful old hymn - second stanza:
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
The ideals and the reason for Canadian Thanksgiving may have been wrapped up in thankfulness for a harvest but for you and I as believers we are thankful for God's goodness, mercy and truth. So, for all my Canadian friends, as you sit around the table why not take a moment and go around the table and speak out loud what you are thankful for.
I am starting a thread called Happy Thanksgiving-What are you thankful for. Feel free to post at the link below.
