Chapter Four
Another aspect of knowing God in prayer is that we become able to work along side Him.
When my daughter was small I began giving her jobs in the kitchen as I prepared meals. At four years old she worked along side me, stirring, sprinkling cheese on top or setting the table. At six she knew which side to put the forks on and could grate the cheese herself. Her knack for stirring had become a wonder to behold.
Regularly she was thanked and praised for the meals ‘she’ prepared.
At times when we pray we are apt to feel that we are making great accomplishments. We feel in control of things, we receive a few pats on the back and many thank-yous when we pray.
Yet if we’re honest we know there’s a more capable ‘cook’ in the kitchen and all we’ve been doing is stirring and setting tables.
God allows us ‘in the kitchen’ as a loving Father that desires we spend time with Him, learning of Him, from Him and about Him.
Genesis 18:17-19 reads:
And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I
am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great
and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth
shall be blessed by him?
For I have known him, in order that he may command
his children and his household after him, that they
keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and
justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what
He has spoken to him.”
God wanted to tell Abraham what business He was about. He has a plan for Abraham’s life and for Abraham to know God and His ways was vital to that plan. Just as we seek to live in His ways, it is vital for us to know His ways. To be like Him we have to know what He is like.
The Lord tells Abraham that He is going to Sodom and Gomorrah because the outcry against them is great and their sin is very grievous. In verse 22 it says: “Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.”
The others continued on but the Lord stood with Abraham and waited for him to speak. Why?
Because it was imperative that Abraham know God. That he see the Lord’s heart. That he comprehend the Lord’s mercy and justice.
And because the Lord was letting Abraham be a part of His work. He was handing Abraham a spoon and saying ‘stir’ this. The Lord made Himself approachable, He revealed His plan and Abraham prayed.
Genesis 18:23-33
And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also
destroy the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there
were fifty righteous within the city; would You also
destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty
righteous that were in it?
Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay
the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous
should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall
not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
And the Lord said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous
within the city, then I will spare all the place for
their sakes.”
Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am
but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak
to the Lord: “Suppose there were five less than the
fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for
lack of five?” And He said, “If I find there forty-
five, I will not destroy it.”
Then he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose
there should be forty found there?” And He said, “I
will not do it for the sake of forty.”
And he said, “Let not the Lord be angry and I will
speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?” And He
said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
Then he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself
to speak to the Lord; Suppose twenty should be found
there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the
sake of twenty.”
And he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will
speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found
there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the
sake of ten.”
So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished
speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his
place.
Abraham has made a false assumption about God. His emotion has flared up and caused him to wonder if what God is planning is truly a ‘Godly’ thing to do. Did Abraham momentarily see his own sense of justice as greater than God’s?
Lest we be too harsh with Abraham… haven’t we all done the same? Haven’t we all questioned the Lord’s justice and ‘rightness’ when we see hard things in life?
But after Abraham has prayed and seen God’s heart, he is able to return home, knowing that God is merciful and kind. Knowing that He is just. Knowing that he could approach Him and not be afraid.
This wasn’t a matter of Abraham twisting God’s arm. The Lord in His mercy wouldn’t have destroyed the righteous with the wicked whether Abraham had asked or not. It was fully a matter of God helping Abraham to know Him by letting him take part in His plan.
Genesis 19:27-28
And Abraham went early in the morning to the place
where he had stood before the Lord. Then he looked
toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of
the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the
land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.
So many today read this story and declare God cruel and unreasonable. It is a story that speaks of the justice of God. Many can’t tie this God of justice together with the God of love. Yet Abraham had no such trouble. Abraham loved God, spoke with God, worked with God.
When Abraham stood that morning, looking out over the plain and seeing the smoke, his heart was already settled. He knew God had done rightly. How did he know? Because he had seen the heart of the Lord… he had spent time in His presence… he had searched His ways and knew His compassion. Abraham didn’t shrink back from the Lord here, he grew towards Him. Because he knew Him intimately, he walked with God all of his days.
Matthew 9:36-38
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with
compassion for them, because they were weary and
scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He
said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is
plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray
the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His
harvest.”
The disciples obeyed. Moved by their Lord’s compassion, they prayed. They knew Him and saw what He saw. A people weary and scattered. A people that needed to know Him too. They prayed that the Lord of the harvest would send out laborers.
In Matthew 28:18-20 their prayer is answered.
Then Jesus came and spoke to them saying, “All
authority has been given to Me in heaven and on
earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am
with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
As they prayed, God worked in their hearts. He filled them with His love and compassion. He prepared them and taught them His ways as they spent time with Him. And He used them to work along side.
They didn’t go out teaching others about Jesus simply because it was the ‘work’ they were given. They went out with hearts filled by God’s love. Overflowing with compassion.
Why pray? To be changed. To see and know the heart of our Father. To be made able to work along side Him.
#
Heavenly Father, we seek Your face. Teach us Your compassion and fill us with Your love. Lord, show us where we have false assumptions about You, and then show us the truth. Change us and use us according to Your plan. Lead us in the way everlasting.
In Jesus name we come to You
Amen
