John Chapter 17 :)

Wow, its taken us a long time to get this far. I think maybe a few years. Momof5, how long has it been? I know you looked it up once but I can't remember now. For those who don't know, we've been going through the book of John chapter by chapter. Just sharing how the verses speak to us, sometimes posting commentaries, things we have learned, just sharing what we see. Ladies you are welcome to join in at anytime.

I love this chapter. This is the prayer of our Savior for us.

Here are the first set of verses......

(NASB) John 17:1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

3 "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

I was thinking on this... "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

I was thinking on how God is glorified. I looked up these verses......

(NKJ) John 12:27) "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28) Father, glorify Your name."
Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again."

Even when we are troubled, our hearts are heavy, things didn't go as we planned, even in our darkest hour we can still glorify God. God gets glory when we trust Him, when we are obedient to Him, when we rely on Him.

John 13:31) So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.

1 Peter 4:16) Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

Psalm 50:14) Offer to God thanksgiving,
And pay your vows to the Most High.
15) Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me."

Psalm 86:8) Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord;
Nor are there any works like Your works.
9) All nations whom You have made
Shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And shall glorify Your name.

Psalm 86:12) I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And I will glorify Your name forevermore.
13) For great is Your mercy toward me,
And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

All praises to our Lord God! :)

Jesus knew his time to die had come now.Jesus asked God to glorify Him;by His dying on the cross, all would see His mission finished and show all the nations how great the Fathers love is for His people,[Jesus would be glorified.] Because of God's plan to save His people,all the nations would see God's love and just ways,therefore God would be glorified.He had already prepared His disiples to go spread the good news.

God gave Jesus authority over all people God elected who He knew would come to Christ and receive eternal life.

Eternal life comes when we believe that God is the only true God and He sent Jesus to die for our sins.

That verse confuses me b/c I know there is more we need to do. Help!

Be kind!;) Laura

:hug: That is great Laura!

No greater love could there be than God's love for us. All nations will see God's love and just ways. He is the one true God. Great and awesome is He!

Thats what I was thinking about verse 3 that there was a lot to that verse. We'll have to dig in the bible and find it. :)

I was thinking on this verse - how to know the only true God, to grow in knowledge of Him.

3 "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Jeremiah 9

23) Thus says the Lord: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the might man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

24) But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the Lord.

When we grow in His knowledge through our relationship with Him, our character is to show these attributes.

Micah 7

18) Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquityAnd passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.

How could we have ever come to Him, to approach Him, without Him sending Jesus to die on the cross in our place and to rise from the grave - overcoming death?

I thought I would post the next verses. I also looked up several cross references. I am trying to keep my mind busy to help ease the hurt of Caleb's death. :cry:

(NASB) John 17:4 "I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.

Luke 22:37 "For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment."

Isaiah 53:12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.

John 17:5 "Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

John 1:11 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

Philippians 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

John 5:18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

John 10:33 The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God."

John 17: 6 "I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.

John 6:37 "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.

John 6:39 "This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.

John 8:51 "Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death."

John 17: 7 "Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You;

There wasn't a crossreference for verse 7. But thinking about it they came to know God by following Jesus, walking closely with Him, hearing and learning from Him. They came to know that Jesus did come from God. They came to know that Jesus is who He claimed to be. Jesus is God who loves us. Who came to earth in human form to be with His creation. To teach us of Himself. That we may know Him the only true God. That Jesus came to bridge the gap between God and man that we be reconciled to God.

John 17: 8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.

John 6:68 Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.

John 12:49 "For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.

John 15:15 "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

John 8:42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.

John 16:27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.

John 3:17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

Jesus came that we may have eternal life with God, that death does not defeat us. All praise to our great God and Savior, Jesus our King. :pp

a few more verses........

(NASB) John 17:9" I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours;

10 and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them.

11 "I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.

12 "While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

9" I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours;

In this passage, Jesus prayed for believers, not the whole world.

I thought I would post a few more verses.....

John 17:13 "But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.

14 "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 "I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.

16 "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.

[quote=Debra R;985072]a few more verses........

(NASB) John 17:9" I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours;

Before believing in Jesus the disciples belonged to God who He chose.
[election still confuses me]

10 and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them.

Jesus wanted the disciples to see Him as an equal with His Father..equal to give praise to.

14 "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 "I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.

16 "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

We know the world is going to hate us because we are Christians. We are not to isolate ourselves from the world, but to serve the Lord and be a light and witness in the world, but not give in and become like the world.

17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.

We are set apart to be holy and for service to the Lord. God's Word is truth.

I am going to add a couple verses....:)

18) As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

19) And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
Jesus gave the disciples (and us) a mission - to spread the Gospel. By His work on the cross, He set us apart - provided our way to God.

:hug: Sorry it's been so long since I've posted here. I've been struggling. But our Lord keeps me from falling.

19) And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

I read Adam Clarkes commentary for this.....
Verse 19. I sanctify myself
I consecrate and devote myself to death-that I may thereby purchase eternal salvation for them. There seems to be here an allusion to the entering of the high priest into the holy of holies, when, having offered the sacrifice, he sprinkled the blood before the ark of the covenant. So Jesus entered into the holiest of all by his own blood, in order to obtain everlasting redemption for men: see Hebrews 9:11-13. The word, αγιαζω, to consecrate or sanctify, is used in the sense of devoting to death, in Jeremiah 12:3, both in the Hebrew and in the Septuagint: the Hebrew signifies also to sacrifice.
III. Our Lord's prayer for his Church, and for all who would believe on his name, through the preaching of the apostles and their successors:

a few more verses......

John 17:20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;

This from Adam Clarkes commentary.....

Verse 20. Neither pray I for these alone
This prayer extends itself through all ages, and takes in every soul that believes in the Lord Jesus.
And what is it that Christ asks in behalf of his followers? The greatest of blessings: unity, peace, love, and eternal glory.

Verse 21. That they all may be one
This prayer was literally answered to the first believers, who were all of one heart and of one soul: Acts 4:32. And why is it that believers are not in the same spirit now? Because they neither attend to the example nor to the truth of Christ.

That the world may believe
are have already seen that the word, κοσμος, world, is used in several parts of this last discourse of our Lord to signify the Jewish people only.
Christ will have all his members to be one in spirit-one in rights and privileges, and one in the blessedness of the future world.

Verse 22. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them
That is, the power to work miracles, and to preach unadulterated truth, say some; but as our Lord is not here praying for the disciples, but for all those who should believe on him through their word, John 17:20, it is more natural to understand the passage thus. As Christ, according to his human nature, is termed the Son of God, he may be understood as saying: "I have communicated to all those who believe, or shall believe in me, the glorious privilege of becoming sons of God; that, being all adopted children of the same Father, they may abide in peace, love, and unity." For this reason it is said, Hebrews 2:11, Christ is not ashamed to call them brethren. However, our Lord may here, as in several other places, be using the past for the future; and the words may therefore be understood of the glory which they were to share with him in heaven.

And what a glorious privilege it is to be the children of the Most High God.
To be able to call God, our Father. That we should be called the sons and daughters of God.

Oh, how much He loves us. I am thankful.

Blessings :hug:

22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;

How awesome that our Savior prayer for us!! The way we will be one is by doing His commandment to love one another as He loves us! That love shows Jesus to the world!

I will post the last verses in the chapter....

23) I in them, and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24) Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

25) O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me.

26) And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

Thank you Brenda :hug:

23) I in them, and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24) Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Jesus prayed that we would be with Him. Isn't that awesome. He loves us and desires that we be with Him.
That we may behold His glory. To behold all His glory to know Him even more is the desire of our hearts.

25) O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me.

26) And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

That we would have His love in us.
I confess sometimes I don't feel that love. This past week I have felt anger. It was a struggle dealing with that anger. But God's love does override the anger and for that I am thankful.
