 Our last chapter ladies!
This is a short chapter, there are only 25 verses. :(
It's amazing that we've gotten to the last chapter after all this time. :)
(NASB) John 21:1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way.
2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.
3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will also come with you." They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
5 So Jesus said to them, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" They answered Him, "No."
6 And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch." So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
I hope you are blessed as you read.

Just wanted to post something I heard earlier, worth sharing.
"Fish are taken OUT of a beautiful life into death...When we fish for Souls, they come OUT of death into a beautiful life." Adrian Rodgers
After typing that it just occurred to me, when Peter and the others went fishing all night and didn't catch anything, that was their effort in the flesh which produced no results. But it wasn't until Jesus told them to try again, casting their nets in a specific place, that they finally made a catch..a hugh catch! Where God guides, God provides. Praise GOD! WE can rest in Him!

Absolutely! That thought occurred to me too...
I also think of the account in Luke 5 when they had fished all night and caught nothing and Jesus told them where to fish. When they caught so much the boats began to sink and Peter fell at Jesus' feet and said "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" (v.8); and in v. 10 ......And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men." That was when they left all to follow him in His ministry. This time, they will leave all to spread the Gospel and grow the church!
4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
Why do you think they didn't know it was Him?

III. After what manner Christ made himself known to them. It is said (v. 1), He showed himself. His body, though a true and real body, was raised, as ours will be, a spiritual body, and so was visible only when he himself was pleased to make it so; or, rather, came and removed so quickly that it was here or there in an instant, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. Four things are observable in the appearance of Christ to them:—
1. He showed himself to them seasonably (v. 4): When the morning was now come, after a fruitless night’s toil, Jesus stood on the shore.
Christ’s time of making himself known to his people is when they are most at a loss. When they think they have lost themselves, he will let them know that they have not lost him. Weeping may endure for a night; but joy comes, if Christ comes, in the morning. Christ appeared to them, not walking upon the water, because, being risen from the dead, he was not to be with them as he had been; but
standing upon the shore, because now they were to make towards him.
right on Brenda!!
Some of the ancients put this significancy upon it, that
Christ, having finished his work, was got through a stormy sea, a sea of blood, to a safe and quiet shore, where he stood in triumph
but the disciples, having their work before them, were yet at sea, in toil and peril. It is a comfort to us, when our passage is rough and stormy, that our Master is at shore, and we are hastening to him
I really like those thoughts....Matthew Henry
I could only come up with ...it was to dark
they couldn't recognize His new body

Hello My Dear friends!
This is the very question I've been mulling over for what seems like weeks, so I'm happy we get to discuss this.
Reading the text, I think they probably weren't looking for Jesus anymore...they stopped 'looking' and didn't recognize Him at all. They were fishing in their own flesh and had their eyes on their current situation = empty nets.
I had something copied from a commentary, but it was just too long and too difficult to edit...maybe tomorrow I will get a chance to copy a few lines. If it is the Lord's will, I should say. This cold has moved into my chest....it's been years since I've had to deal with something like this. Mixed blessings. The blessing? I get to lay back and focus on Jesus, draw closer to Him...

Well, time for a few more verses....I have been behind!:)
7) Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea.
8) But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish.
9) Then as soon as they had come to land they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it and bread.
10) Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught."
11) Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.
12) Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?"-knowing that it was the Lord.
13) Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.
14) This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Why do you think they didn't know it was Him?
You would think they would have known Jesus. It seems there had to be a reason they didn't recognize Him. Maybe they were prevented from recognizing Him. I thought of these verses.........
Luke 24:15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.
16 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.
31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.

I have been way behind. :(
I thought I would post this from Adam Clarke's Commentary for verse 14...........
Verse 14. This is now the third time
That is, this was the third time he appeared unto the apostles, when all or most of them were together. He appeared to ten of them, John 20:19; again to eleven of them, John 20:26; and at this time to seven of them, John 21:2. But, when the other evangelists are collated, we shall find that this was the seventh time in which he had manifested himself after he arose from the dead.
1st. He appeared to Mary of Magdala, Mark 16:9; ; John 20:15,16.
2ndly, To the holy women who came from the tomb. Matthew 28:9.
3dly, To the two disciples who went to Emmaus, Luke 24:13, alone, Luke 24:34. 5thly, To the ten, in the absence of Thomas, John 20:19. 6thly, Eight days after to the eleven, Thomas being present; John 20:26. 7thly, To the seven, mentioned in John 21:2; which was between the eighth and fortieth day after his resurrection.
Besides these seven appearances, he showed himself, 8thly, To the disciples on a certain mountain in Galilee, Matthew 28:16. If the appearance mentioned by St. Paul, 1 Corinthians 15:6, to upwards of 500 brethren at once-if this be not the same with his appearance on a mountain in Galilee, it must be considered the ninth.
According to the same apostle, he was seen of James, 1 Corinthians 15:7, which may have been the tenth appearance. And, after this, to all the apostles, when, at Bethany, he ascended to heaven in their presence. See Mark 16:19,20; ; Luke 24:50-53; ; Acts 1:3-12; ; 1 Corinthians 15:7. This appears to have been the eleventh time in which he distinctly manifested himself after his resurrection. But there might have been many other manifestations, which the evangelists have not thought proper to enumerate, as not being connected with any thing of singular weight or importance.

A few more verses........
John 21:15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You " He said to him, "Tend My lambs."
16 He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep."
17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You " Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep.

Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord." So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.
He was still 'immature' in his actions
John 18:10
10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus.
:hmm: Peter is interesting to me and I've been 'looking' at him. He wanted to follow Jesus, he was eager in his faith and excited. I think he went more by feelings than 'mature faith' and that was his 'downfall'. [ mine also] After Jesus' resurrection Peter 'felt' horrible and sorrowful. Upon hearing Jesus was 'back' his first thought wasn't about Jesus not forgiving him, but instead he chose to 'run back to Him'. In meekness and sorrow he had a strong desire to return to Him.

I could only come up with ...it was to dark
they couldn't recognize His new body
I suggest that Jesus may not have looked any different at all.
When I was a child, in the pig market with my elder brother, a woman the other side of the pens kept smiling at me - strange, as she was just like my Aunt Meg who, I knew for a fact was at least 50 miles away. Eventuallly I pointed her out to my brother, his reply? "It is Aunt Meg you idiot"
The disciples knew Jesus was dead. He couldn't be on the beach - could He? . . . which goes to show they didn't believe He, and their hopes, would really Rise from the dead.

It seems to me that Jesus asked Peter three times because Peter denied Jesus three times. What a restoration!
In verse 15, when Jesus says "tend my lambs" I see that as talking about the newly born-again believers, to feed them, teach them and take care of them. Frances knows all about animals; what can you teach us here, Frances?

 Thank you sis, I hadn't thought about Jesus asking Peter three times because of his denial.
yes Frances , what can you share with us?
I was reading this earlier from Burton Coffman commentaries..............
John 21 Verse 17
He saith unto him the third time, Simon son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Grievous as this was for Peter, it wiped out all guilt of his denials; and the Saviour's total forgiveness is implicit in the threefold charge to care for the church Jesus came to establish. The external situation associated with this triple confession of love inevitably called to mind the denials.
There were three of each; the charcoal fire was at both events; the day was breaking on both occasions; and there had to have been another cockcrow, although the latter is not mentioned.
The Gospel is infinitely richer for this triple confession of Peter's love of Jesus. It explains why Peter was at his usual place in the lead on Pentecost; and it also makes it impossible to assert (intelligently) that this Gospel was written to downgrade Peter, as some have affirmed. The image of Peter that emerges in John is even higher than that in the synoptics.
I have always liked Peter, I can relate to him. He seemed very impetuous. Acting before thinking. Thats me a lot of times. Peter wanted to follow Jesus. As Laura said, "He wanted to follow Jesus, he was eager in his faith and excited." He was very emotional. And seemed to be ruled by his emotions. But he had a heart for Jesus. He did love our Savior. I can almost imagine how he felt when he denied Jesus.......................
Matthew 26:74 Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.
75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.
I can imagine his remorse. I like this though............
Mark 16:6 And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
7 "But go, tell His disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'"
"Go tell His disciples and Peter." I think it was very special that Peter was named. I think that was to let Peter know that he was forgiven. I can also imagine his joy!
Thank you my sisters  for all your thoughts and contributions to this study.

Here are the last verses...........
(NASB) John 21:18 "Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go."
19 Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!"
20 Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?"
21 So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?"
22 Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!"
23 Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"
24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

Matthew16:18
Jesus wanted Peter to lead the apostles
18 "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
:hmm: Jesus renamed Simon... Peter to mean rock and wanted Him to be the leader when He knew Peter would deny Him 3 times.
God used Peter's character to teach us many lessons.
Three times the Lord asked Peter if Peter loved Him. The first two times, Christ used the word agapa, signifying a love of commitment, a love of the will. Peter responded with the word phile, indicating his strong emotion for the Lord. The word suggests warmth, fondness, and friendship.
The third time Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him He used the word phileō, indicating strong friendship. Christ had taught that a friend who loves will lay down his life for a friend. Peter, instead, had denied Christ three times. With Peter’s final response, “You know that I love You,” Christ had drawn a commitment from Peter

19 Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!"
Tradition has it that Peter was crucified - upside down.
20 Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?"
21 So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?"

23 Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?"
This passage has always stuck with me..... How many times have I asked God, "what about this person, why aren't they doing this or that?" and I know that He tells me that it doesn't concern me, to mind my own business, and be obedient to what He leads me to do!!
24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
John identifies himself as that disciple and we know that he was the only disciple who was not martyred.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.
Ladies, I am kind of sad to see this finish.....I have been so blessed! Thank you!
