THis is a demonstration of the pentatonic moving thru 3 ovtaves. Likewise using this little lick here we can move
our starting point to the sixth string 3rd fret or second string 8th fret and use the same lick but one octave
higher or lower. Also it helped me to learn to move thru the octaves. Here is an example

That is pretty close to what is in this bok for guitar part 2. You have a book or did you find it online.

Do you have this part. 7h9p7 is a trill, you do several real quick hammer ons and pull offs before sliding towards the 1st fret and let it fade. It is done twice.

ok guys I just started with the guitar not long ago and haven't learned tab very well yet. Can you guys explain some of this stuff for me. Another thing is are these tabs for electric or can they be played on acustic as well, since I play acustic. Other than that what advice do you give to a beginner like me?

The best way to learn tab is to search Reading Guitar Tabs on any search engine. About.com is a good place to check out guitar help.... here's a start from the site, http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm?terms=Guitar

As for learning tabs or learning a song from tabs, ya have to know the song first. All tabs do is show you where to place fingers on the fretboard, what strings are involved but not any tempo, speed, or strumming pattern.

As for tips: Learn the main chords A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. There are a few other main ones but these are a good base. Once these are nearly mastered work on Barre Chords (I need to do this myself), then start scales to gain finger dexterity and speed. If you plan on playing just chords (rythym) then scales may not be as important. Picking scales is more toward the lead style of playing.

Any tab can be for both electric or acustic but when ya get into tapping, hammer on's and off's it's more an electric style of playing but can be done on an acustic with practice. Pulloff's are easy to play on both but not hammer on's and definately not tapping.

OK, now that I may have spoke in half a language that may have you scratching your head... I hope this helped :lol:

I am making this thread because I have noticed that their are numerous people on this board that play an instrument and I thought that it would be cool to have a place where musicians could share ideas and talk about music stuff.

Regular prodigy there!!!! Bet Hendrix would've felt threatened by this one. Considering I haven't heard much of Jimi's stuff, I'm gonna say this kid is better than Jimi Hendrix.

i saw that a year or so ago. turns out that was like a 15 year old kid. someone has since 'discovered' him and last i heard he's working on being developed and making some serious cash.

I loaded the main software and the sound kept popping and I thought it was a settings problem but I then immediately downloaded the updates and after that it was awesome.

I only have 1 nagging complaint but I can get around it... because it only works through headphones or an external set of speakers all those cables get in the way sometimes :lol:

Today I'm gonna check out the other 3 programs to see if I want to install them or not.

This is the major modal scales in the key of C. Pay attention to the form. The form or pattern will stay the same, the location will just change with the key. For example the Aolean scale pattern starts at the 5th fret for the key of C but if we change to the Key of G it start at the open or 12th fret.

I start at the bottom of the guitar and work thru each pattern 1 time, then move up to the next note on the 6th string and start the next patern. I continue up to the 17th fret (0=12, 1=13, 3=15, 5=17) and then work back down to the neck. I also do what I call "Double Dutching" the pattern. I will post that next chance I get.

Yes! The more familiar you are with those patterns the moment you decide to improvise then you won't even need to look, just let your fingers move across the fretboard and let your ears tell you if it sounds good.

Learning tabs to songs a good but to develop a "base" of guitar playing then you practice the basics as well. Scales, chords, theory etc.

I can play allot of guitar licks and a few songs due to tab practicing but can I pick up a guitar and make music... nope!

I want to make music so I practice the basics.

That is fine, I started that way. What I noticed is when I learned some scales and then went back to tab, I picked it up alot faster. Scales are like a road map to where all the notes are on the fretboard. A road map shows all the ways to get to a town, it is up to you how you get there.
It will also limber your fingers up and really build up some speed.

These are the 5 patterns of the pentatonic (5 note) scale. It is shown here in the A minor
position. I tabbed it out, then put a diagram to show what it loks like on the fretboard.
Almost all rock lead will use this pattern in some way. Concentrate on learning the pattern
more than the location. Take pattern 1for instance If we are playing a song in A minor or C major
we would play it as tabbed, but if we change to the key of G or E minor, we would play the same
pattern but starting at the open or 12th fret. likewise pattern 2 would follow at the 3rd or
15th fret in G major (E minor). In rock and blues it is very common to play a minor key against
a major key. For instance we would play our lead out of the scale as tabbed below (A minor) against
an A major (A, D, E major chords/power chords). Also at the 12th fret or open E minor would be
played against E Major (E, A, B major/power chords) as is done in Stevie Ray Vaughan's song Pride n' Joy

Stevie Ray's intro to "Pride N' Joy". An excersise in E minor Pentatonics. Note how he is moving thru the E minor pentatonics in the open opsition and yet he is playing in E major (E A B chords). This is extreemly common in Blues and Rock.

When we started on the G note everything went fine until we got to the E note. Here there is only a 1/2 step between E and F however we need a whole step. So we have to go one more to the F#. The next step is a 1/2 step and as it always will, it brings us back to the root note.

When musicians write sheet music in a key like this (G), instead of going thru and sharping every F note, they just sharp it at the beggining of the staff. This is called the Key Signature. Here are the 15 major and minor Key signatures. (Db-C#, Gb-F#, Cb-B, are enharmonic keys, meaning that they are written differently, but sound the same.)

Blues Scales extend the standard pentatonic scale with an extra 'note', the flat 5th or called the Blues note. See Jolly's post #97 for one of the standard scales. This is in the key of G. This note will be the '0' note.

I was just wondering what everybody plays for brand and such. A cupple years ago for my b-day my parents bought me an electric starter pack. It is a Behringer v-tone 2 pack with 15 watt amp. Also I like to use Jim Dunlop picks and Ernie ball regular slinkies.

For an acustic I bought a cheap $100 washburn from target eith a built in tunner. It has pretty good tone and sound to it though.

If we work thru every note in the C scale the way I showed in the previous thread we will find is that the 1st, 4th, and 5th note out of the "C" scale, will be major Chords. The C, F, and G chords are in the key of C. This is what is known as a 1, 4, 5 chord progression. This rule is true in all Keys

Lets go to the key of G for a second. Note that the 1st, 4th and 5th (G, C, D) These when worked out will also turn out to be all Major Triads. (Triads means 3 note chords)

Well what about the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th.
If you remember the previous post, The 6th will always be the relative minor for the key. Well the 2nd ans 3rd will turn out to be minor chords as well. Therefore when we look at the Key of C, we can automatically know that

The 1st (C), 4th(F) and 5th (G) will always resolve into major chords
The 2nd(Dm), 3rd(Em) and 6th(Am) will always resolve into minor chords
The 6th will always be the relative minor for that key.Therefore we could look at the pervious Major Scales\Keys like this.

I was trying to draw out what the pattern of that scale would look like on the keyboard. Work thru the scale before that pattern real slow and notice where your fingers land. It is important esp later to pay attention more to the pattern than the exact place on the fretboard. The patern will stay the same, but it will move on the fretboard as the Key changes.

Review


Chords are always named for the root note.
Unless specified, a chord always contains the 1st (root), 3rd and 5th notes out of the scale named by the root note
Major means nothing has been changed in the scale
Minor means some notes in the scale have been lowered 1/2 a step or 1 fret. If no number is after the Minor (m) then it is refering to the 3rd note (example Am, Em, Dm, Bm)
Chords may contain any number of the 1st, 3rd or 5th notes in them, but must contain at least 1 of each unless otherwise noted. (example Power Chords leave out the 3rd)Any chord deviating from the above will have numbers and letter abbreviations after it. A7,Gmaj7, Dm7, ect. This section will be going over what those numbers and abbreviations mean, Concentrating on the 7th note


The next most popular chord you are likely to see are Dominant 7th chords or just 7th chords. The formula for a Dominant 7th chord is the root, 3rd, 5th and a flatt 7th (7th lowered 1/2 step or 1 fret). In other words you adding a flattened 7th note to a major chord.

Here is the G major scale. A G major chord would consist of the G, B, And D notes. For a G7, we lower the 7th note 1/2 step and add it to the major Chord. the 7th lowered would be an F note. Once again anywhere you can Isolate a combination of G,B,D,F, you will have a G dominant 7th chord. Here is a diagram of a the G7 chord played open

You will only have 1 dominant 7th chord in a key. It will always be the chord formed with the 5th note of the key. Another way to put it is that on a 1, 4, 5 chord pattern song the 5 chord is usually the only one that can be played as a Dominant 7th chord. Because of this looking for this chord is a good way to determin the key of a piece of music. Try striking a G7 then a C and listen to the sound. It has a "The End" sound to it. It just seems to want to move to the Root Chord of the Key. Here are a few others to try.
D7, G
E7, A
C7, F
A7, D


Special exception to the Dominant 7th rule
Music is like the English language. For every rule there is an exception and for every exception there is another one. Here is a common one dealing with the Dominant 7th chord.
Sometimes music may want to build more tension, so it will move in 5ths of the 7th Chord. For an example Say we are playing in C but we want to play a D7. We could play a D7, which is the 5th to the Key of G. Then pregress to the G7 which is the 5th of C and to a C major chord. Here in essence we have pretended to be in the key of G to increase the tension and then partially resolved it with the G7, and brung full resolution with the C major Chord. We could even go further and play an A7, to D7 to G7 to C.;) Get the Idea


Minor 7th Chords
Minor 7th are like major 7th except we are taking a minor chord and adding the flat 7th to it. It works out to 1st (root), b 3rd, 5th, and b7th

Hopefully by now you got a basic Idea of how all this works out. So now I am just going to post the names, meanings and formulas


Add - ( A add 2, A add 9, C add 13) means to play the normal chord but add the numbered note out of the scale for that chord. Example G add 9th means to add the 9th note above the root, which would be the second A after the root G
Augmented - Root, 3rd, #5th (ex G aug G B D#)
Diminished - root, b 3rd, b 5th (Examples Bdim B, D, F)
Fifth (5th) - Open 5th chord Only the root and 5th played (Ex Powerchords, A5=A and E note only
minor 7th - 1, b3, 5, b7
minor major 7th - 1, b3, 5 7
Suspended 4th - 1, 4, 5
Suspended 2nd - 1, 2, 5
Seventh (7th) -1, 3, 5, b7

What dose it mean when you ask for a short scale guitar? I have heard people ask for them and also on the internet on manufactures sites they have the scale on their. The most common that I have seen has been a 24 3/4" scale. What is so special about that? All this time I thought that a guitar was a guitar (besides the obvious differences with sound and tone).

Short Scale Length has to do with the length of the neck on the guitar. The length of the neck effects the fret layout and how easy the strings react to the players input (bends, freting, slides, buzzing:mad: , ect.
The shorter the scale length, the closer the frets are. The shorter scale legnth also has less string tension when in tune. Less string tension makes for easier bending and fretting. Longer scale length allows for more space between frets. This helps for lead players, players with bigger hands, ect.

The best thing to do when buying a guitar is to go shopping and lok for one that the neck fits your hand like a glove (and that sounds great too):bounce:

I got it. Short scale=less tension and closer frets, easer bending and fretting. Sounds like I would like to try one and see for myself. Besides, who doesn't like a day looking at and playing different guitars. Also with short scales, is their less fret buzz?

With less string tension there is more of a tendency for the frets to buzz due to the string vibrating a wider spot. It can be adjusted some by raising the string highth though

Fret buzz makes me do some of these :B:B:B:B:B and maybe a little of this :mad::mad:. Now I know why rock stars smash their guitars at concerts.

Here is the tab I use for the song Swing. Ya have to use an alternate picking technique. Do it slow until you can get through it all and then as you speed it up you'll say to yourself, "That is that song!" :lol:

You can try "Night Moves" by Bob Seger

Bar chord G then a real quick progression to barr F and then to open C.
And reverse, open C, to a quick barr F to a Bar G:D

I use the open G though, if you know the song it will come to you real quick

I can do some too. I can switch between barre chords but not too fast between them and regular chords like the E and D. I just barre all the strings with my first finger and go up and down the neck at every fret to build strength. Don't cheat with helping 1st finger with 2nd finger. Then (this is where I am now) add in two more fingers on other frets. Keep the finger that is barreing, strait and make your other fingers change to that one;). It isn't too hard doing them this way to learn them.

Alot of the music today just uses power chords. I keep coming up with power chords instead of bar chords. If a regular Barr is hard you might try doing them Hendrix style. He used his thumb on the low E string


barr the 1st finger across only 2 strings and use the thumb to catch the 6th (numbers show what fingers go where, T = thumb)

Its in the Key of E major. The "d" only represents note placement, you will have to feel for the timing. The "*" means these nots are played real fast, kind of in a tripplet feel.

This is the same excersize, except it is moving from C to its relative minor "Am". WHen you get pretty proficient at this, try adding in the ones above. These will give you a little "Flair" when transitioning chords. I will post a few more after I have had sleep.

Hi Slug,

I saw you mention that you thought you sucked on the guitar.
I promise you that you don't. The guitar is something that takes some time and you are going about it correctly, but always have fun with it so it doesn't get stagnant. Maintain a solid practice routine. Barre chords are easy once you play around with them. The biggest thing is getting the natural shape of the cord down pat so you can switch into that chord on a dime. All tablature is written a bit differently, so bear with it. After a while you will simply "sight read" it and apply it.
What kind of gear are you playing through?
If you have any questions on "ANY" gear, please post or PM me. I know more than I want to....haha.

Alright, check this out... I showed up early at church last night and did a practice without the band. So here it is... No One Like You by David Crowder! With missed cues, buzzing strings and the way I play it which rocks a little more then the original :pp

Then again on Tuesday and Wednesday nights next week and the week after. Then the Vigil is on the 25th where we'll play the song. So that 23rd practice I'll see how the practice went with a recording and then the recording of when we play for the church.

I took up playing guitar again a few months ago, the last time I played was over 25 years ago. Needless to say I was very rusty but it seems once you learn you can pick it back up pretty quickly even many years later. I went to a christian fellowship meeting today and i was asked (along with 1 other) to play guitar during the sing along . I said yes but was hesitant about the idea. Its seems if you tell someone you can play guitar they immediately think you are a pro for some reason.:hmm:
Anyway things went very well, better than I had hoped, we had a great time in the Lord :pp
Some thanked me for playing and when I told them I had played once as a teen and had only bin playing for about 6 months, they didnt believe me :o . God is so good ! thank you Jesus for your blessings !:pp
