I was curious what John the Baptist meant when he said we will be baptised by fire? Our sins must burn away first before we are acceptable is what many sources say this means.
Luke 3:16, "John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I cometh, the latchet of Whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire."
The prophet Isaiah told God he had an unclean tounge so an angel cleansed him by burning his tounge with a hot coal. Again here God is cleansing by fire.
Isaiah 6:6,7, "Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged."
I am a non-denominational christian and am not supporting the catholic church, I am just curious what a protestant explaination is for being cleansed by fire. If this doesn't mean purgatory what does it mean?
