They call it Hell from the Old Norse 'hellir' meaning 'cliff cave.' It's not one of the towns in Norway that I've visited but I'd have no problem being there. I've seen towns with worse names, none of which I'll post here.
Our English word Hell probably comes the Old Norse 'hel,' which may mean to cover up or conceal. It's the concept of a shadowy underworld and ruled in Norse mythology by a female figure of the same name, featured in some of the poetic eddas.
