Thread: do you believe in supernatural events outside of the bible?

do you believe in supernatural events outside of the bible?

my question to believers is, "the bible features a TON of supernatural events. to be a christian you have to believe the bible, so you have to believe that those supernatural events occurred. that being said, do you believe in any other supernatural events outside of the bible?"

by "supernatural event" i mean pretty much anything not explained by the laws of science as we know. so that would include:

    1) events in other religions (the angel on the winged horse talking to mohammed for 12 years in islam, the "seer stones" founds by joseph smith, founder of the mormon faith, reincarnation from life to life believed by most hindus, etc.)

    2) events involving aliens

    3) events involving monsters (bigfoot, yeti, loch ness monster)

    4) supernatural people (people with mental powers, ESP, precognition, etc.)

so do you believe in these things? dismiss them? either way, why?

    1) no.
    2) no.
    3) while humorus, no.
    4) i love watching the shows on TV about it, but i don't really believe in it. it kinda freaks me out sometimes though

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Out of your list I believe that many people do operate in a spiritual, unseen realm . . . many without truthful knowledge of it.

    Yes.

by "supernatural event" i mean pretty much anything not explained by the laws of science as we know. so that would include:

I haven't heard of anything supernatural with the hindus....you would have to give an example. As far as this other stuff....I don't know enough to comment. Reincarnation cannot be proven either by the way.

    2) events involving aliens
I wouldn't consider that supernatural...if aliens did exist, which I don't believe they do, but if they did what does it prove exactly? Its only something unknown...which doesn't make it super natural.

    3) events involving monsters (bigfoot, yeti, loch ness monster)
    Still not supernatural.

    4) supernatural people (people with mental powers, ESP, precognition, etc.)
Isn't their some guy offering a ton of money for anyone that can prove they have these powers? Many have tried but he always catches on to their sneaky ways and disproves their so called powers...

so do you believe in these things? dismiss them? either way, why?
Most of those I would dismiss as being supernatural yes...not my idea of what supernatural is. The bible gives better examples of that.

We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; We drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; We drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated?" - D A Carson

Well, perhaps not, but I don't know, I don't know much about most of those other than reincarnation (which I don't believe happens, so if it doesn't exist it can't be supernatural)
    2) events involving aliens
Well, I don't know whether aliens exist or not, but either way, even if they did, they would've been created by God, just as we were, so it would be an example of God's power, but I don't know that I'd describe it as supernatural.
    3) events involving monsters (bigfoot, yeti, loch ness monster)
I don't know whether this would really be classified as supernatural either, but I don't think I believe in bigfoot or yeti, although I believe the loch ness monster(s) could be real and if so there wouldn't be anything miraculous about it, they would just be dinosaurs that didn't die off.
    4) supernatural people (people with mental powers, ESP, precognition, etc.)
I have always strongly doubted whether these people actual have the powers they claim to.

    how about these supernatural events?

muhammad traveling with the angel gabriel to jerusalem?
muhammad traveling to heaven to speak with moses and jesus?
the angel gabriel arriving on a flying horse and dictating the koran to muhammad?

    muslims believe those!

an angel, in 1830, showing joseph smith special plates that proved jesus traveled to the new world centuries after his 'death'

smith was able to interpret 116 pages the book of mormon from looking at two stones in his hat

mormons believe these! i'm serious. really

i could talk about hindus (who are all over the place), etc., but i think you see the point.

so do these things strike you as ridiculous?

Do I believe those things are truthful? No, I do not. Do I believe things like that are possible. Yes, I do. I believe angels can appear to people, and I also believe that if God willed it then someone could go to heaven.

First off, having been involved in the occult for some time before turning to God, yes I do believe that supernatural events can and do take place that are not recorded in the Bible. The Bible is also clear that such things can and do happen, and they are an abomination to God:

Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,
Deu 18:11 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
Deu 18:12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you.

In terms of whether any one specific event is real or imagined, I'd have to say I'd typically be skeptical at first until I could confirm the source as being reliable. While I don't doubt supernatural events do occur (I've seen several first-hand) I also know there are an awful lot of things out there that can be explained through trickery rather than supernature.
1Jn 4:1 NKJV Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1Th 5:21-22 NKJV Test all things; hold fast what is good. (22) Abstain from every form of evil.

It is like asking - do i believe God can express his eternal power outside of biblical writings? - the answer is of course yes.

However anything that adds or takes away - contradicts scripture - does not come from God. There are NO inspired writings outside of the 66 books of the bible.

So that leaves anything that is contradictary to God's stated Will, which comes from the ruler of this world/ Satan and his followers both in the visable and invisable world. This obviously involves all other religions, and so called christian groups who have any writings they consider from God directly.

Can and does God break the rules of science which he put in place? - yes often. SofTy.

Since I know two men that have died and when prayed for they both now live and one of them, living nearby, was certified dead for an hour and a half, I would, of necessity, be very dense not to believe, would I not?

Now, your opening a can of worms, filled to overflow by men.
    1) events in other religions (the angel on the winged horse talking to mohammed for 12 years in islam, the "seer stones" founds by joseph smith, founder of the mormon faith, reincarnation from life to life believed by most hindus, etc.)
Any one of these events, if they were true, would make the Holy Scriptures a lie.
    2) events involving aliens
Some stories are nice fiction but there is no concrete evidence. For one to believe in flying saucers and aliens one must remove and dispose of their powers to reason in the delivery room.
    3) events involving monsters (bigfoot, yeti, loch ness monster)
Each reported incident has brought the much coveted 15 minutes of fame but nothing more.
    4) supernatural people (people with mental powers, ESP, precognition, etc.)
Magic is fun to observe but it is all done (tongue in cheek) with smoke and mirrors.

    1) Yes, I do believe in them. Mainly because I am of the opinion that God would not approach just a certain group of people. Also we have in the Bible the beginning of the Muslim Faith etc (Ishmeal and Isaac- which would then tranfer later on because God promised both groups to make them as numerous as the nations would eventually become the Jewish and Islamic Faith)...but ok back on track- sure, why not? If God can communicate to us, surely he can communicate to other people, BUT I do believe that a lot of it can be misinterpreted by people the messeges per se. I mean, heck, the Bible itself is misinterpreted by Christians everyday and if we misinterpret the letter to us by God, then other religions are also allowed to misinterpret their leaders and messages etc.

Now the reincarnation of the hindu's etc- I can't necessarily say I believe in it because I do think there are times that people go to extreams with what messages say. For all we know the eastern religions, seeking enlightenment may have very well misinterpreted the message from God to them that when you die you will live again- well...they probably thought, hey we'll come back until we reach Nirvana etc etc

With Joseph Smith, we have no idea if he was hallucinating with some peyote (very common where he was) or if he really did see some talking rocks.

So that is a very complex question but a very good one. Because it all comes down to which mindset you want to follow and then the histories behind them. However, as a scientist I will always transfer my thoughts to science and say: Well since I wasn't there to give a medical diagnosis, nor was I there to give a scientific evaluation myself--then I truely do not know the answer to it.

BUT my educated guess would be that Jesus was the savior but the message got across through people by a divine means and it was misinterpreted etc by the person recieving the message OR it could have been lost in the translation by the person who did recieve the message to the masses. Again, we don't know we weren't there. But, I would not be so quick to dismiss that capability ONLY because we are watching the Universe itself to continue to expand- and that in itself is a miracle. So, if we can observe the universe expand, surely it could happen.

    2) I am almost certain there is life beyond ours out there in space. I do think however that many claims of UFO's and aliens are made up, hoaxes, mind playing tricks on them, someone just got drunk or high, or just aircraft they can't readily identify. However, I do believe there is life out there. The universe is too big and its still growing to NOT contain another planet out there that is just like ours. SO, my response is, I won't entirely discount the ability of aliens to come and visit our planet, but I personally have never seen one.

    3) Again, as a scientist I have to give my approach to this as very cautious. Do I believe they are there? Well, I can't be certain and here is why. If as a scientist I say for certain there is no yeti, yet a week later we find a yeti, my credibility is tarnished. SO I am a scientist that will say well, we haven't found it yet, and until we have found it I will not discount it's existance. We cannot be everywhere at one time, and there are still many parts of the jungle being explored, the sea is still too deep in places to explore etc etc so we don't know.

    4) Super natural people. Well the brain can do incredibly certain things, can't they? I do believe people have gifts, but those gifts, I will have to say end at this moot point. These people with ESP etc happen to be very accutely aware of the subtleties of people in general even if they do not realize it. They are very observent people and people who can go through a series of deductions rather quickly in order to get some psychic ability etc and ability to see in the future. Some people say it's a god given talent and really it is-being aware of your surroundings IS a talent.

But at the same time again, I will not dismiss it but I will say- without going into the cause and effect of neurons and receptors- that 99% gives a pretty hard logical case against it.

I hope I helped answer your questions.

    Hi QA,

I believe in supernatural events but not for example, that the angel Gabriel actually flew down on a winged horse to dictate the Koran to Mohammed. The message of the Koran is contrary to the message of the Bible, and cannot have the same source. So either Mohammed lied about the source of the Koran, or he was hallucinating, or a demonic spirit "inspired" him.

Muslims in remote places sometimes do receive visions and dreams of Christ, and when that happens, they come to faith in Christ as He is presented in Scriptre. But God doesn't speak to mankind with conflicting messages.

    Gal 1:6-9
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
    NKJV

No matter what the source, if an event or phenomenon leads one away from the true gospel of Jesus Christ, it is false and to be rejected.

    Deut 13:1-4
"If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, 2 and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods' — which you have not known — 'and let us serve them,' 3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.
    NKJV

The Bible does prophesy that the Antichrist will do great signs and wonders and that people will be deceived and will worship him. For this reason it is important to test everything against the message that is being communicated through the "supernatural event." Mohammed, Joseph Smith, and in some cases the 'aliens' are all promoting belief systems that are contrary or even outright hostile to the Biblical faith.
    Love In Christ,
    Tanya

regarding my subquestion about supernatural events believed by other religions, I have to say its nice to see such a nice spread of opinions, ranging from "if those things are true, the bible would be wrong," to "sure they could have happened, but may have been misinterrupted." i apologize if my prior posts inferred that there were some sort of 'marching orders' on this board. its a great board, indeed!

personally i think the possibility of aliens makes a lot more sense than anything in the bible, but that's just me. i mean, the sheer math of billions and billions of stars just is too overwhelming for me to think that little old earth, which is not the center of anything, not even the solar system, is totally unique

and speaking of aliens, i researched scientology this weekend and basically they believe that we are all immortal aliens confined to our human shells on this crappy planet. they even have a name for us but i forget what it is. i guess my point is just that all sorts of people believe in all sorts of crazy things.

Wow, someone said if those events were true, that means the bible might wrong? I don't see why a supernatural event in another religion would cancel out our bible... especially since more and more of the bible is being proven true through outside sources...probably 80% of the bible has been proven true so far and they are finding new things all the time...the events, the places and people in it have been proven to be true through historical and archeological evidence...

There is far more proof for the bible then there is for aliens actually. I always find it odd that people would be more willing to believe in aliens then in God actually...especially with more proof of God then aliens...

Anyway yes people believe all sorts of things for sure...most of the time its for very selfish reasons too.
