    Suggestions on bible dictionaries

I'm looking for suggestions on bible dictionaries that would be good to have on hand for my studies.

I'm also looking for book suggestions to have for my studies that may have maps and charts?

These are all top notch and worth every penny:

    For starters:

    General one volume dictionaries:

New Bible Dictionary (3rd Edition), ed. I. Howard Marshall, A. R. Millard, J. I. Packer and Donald J. Wiseman

Baker Illustrated Bible Dictionary, editors Tremper Longman III, Peter Enns, and Mark Strauss; Baker, forthcoming 2009 (Since you want maps, pictures, etc.)

Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament by G. K. Beale and D. A. Carson **** (This belongs in every Christian's library. The best single-volume reference work produced over the last 15 years, hands down. It will greatly enhance your study of both testaments.)

As finances permit, I suggest that you invest in these (the OT series lacks 2 more volumes). They're specialized dictionaries focused on each of the major groups of books in Scripture:

Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentateuch, ed. T. Desmond Alexander and David W. Baker

Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books, ed. Bill T. Arnold and H. G. M. Williamson

Dictionary of the Old Testament: Wisdom, Poetry & Writings, ed. Tremper Longman III and Peter Enns

Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, ed. Joel B. Green, Scot McKnight and I. Howard Marshall

Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, ed. Gerald F. Hawthorne, Ralph P. Martin and Daniel G. Reid

Dictionary of the Later New Testament & Its Developments, ed. Ralph P. Martin and Peter H. Davids

Dictionary of New Testament Background, ed. Craig A. Evans and Stanley E. Porter

If you can find it the Strong's dictionary is a good one.
    I use it a lot.

    I am very anti-abortion, anti-murder, and Pro-Love.

Many Bible Dictionaries are really more like mini-encyclopedias, with articles on Bible topics, more than a simple definiton of words.

Many of the major Christian publishers offer one or more excellent choices.

A few of my favourite are Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary (also with product info here, and here), the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (also with product information here, and here), and Eerdman's Dictionary of the Bible (also with product information here and here). Any or each would make a fine addition to a basic Christian library.

If it's word studies you're interested in, you might consider Mounce's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old & New Testament Words from Zondervan Publishers (they have a few good Bible dictionaries too).

And for maps and charts I'd go with the Holman Bible Atlas (also here and here), and Rose Publishing's Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps & Time Lines (aslo here and here), and Rose Book of Bible Charts 2 (also here and here).
