Eating a Cookie: Gluttonous? and Other Hard Topics

My friend was being difficult the other day when talking to me about various topics that related to Christianity. We were discussing gluttony and he considered eating a cookie to be gluttonous. How do I explain to them how this isn't so, if it isn't? Also, he was talking about sex for pleasure. I told him it was all right to have sex with your wife, even if you are not procreating because this is the gift that God gave us. He still wanted an explanation and I did not know how to explain. Can someone help me out with these two topics? Thanks.

is this friend christian as well?

also, i'm pretty sure, let me check, yeah, eating one single cookie isn't gluttony. by definition it means taking something in an over-indulgance. i think it can pertain to many things, not just food, and certainly not a cookie. man i live for cookies! those soft yummy ones! i eat about 10 at once.

    Galatians 5:13
You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature ; rather, serve one another in love.

as for sex, someone else can open that can. hope tha might of helped a little.

I agree with what he said. And on the subject of sex, have your friend read Song of Solomon and then try to say sex isn't to be enjoyed

Gluttony is eating so much that it is harmful for your body, and being "overweight" is harmful, binge eating can be harmful, even seemingly innocent white processed flours can spike your blood sugar and be harmful. We avoid these to the extent that we can, but it's tricky. As for the direct cookie example, one cookie is fine. It's not bad for you. Eating ten in a row might show a need for more self control

Your friend, I think, does not understand the principle that God created pleasure, and that pleasure is good. God created all sorts of amazing food, and beauty in the world, and closeness with other people that is all meant to be enjoyed!! Satan twists some of these into something destructive, and we need to avoid the destructive twisted versions of these different things, but nowhere does it say that we should avoid all pleasure!

That reminds me, Satan is always trying to get people to think that God wants them not to have pleasure. The first thing out of his mouth, to Eve, was "Has God really said you cannot eat of ANY tree in the garden?" Trying to make God sound restrictive, when actually, God had created all that enjoyable fruit specifically for them and to be enjoyed! (except the one that would bring them death)

I do not believe being overweighted is sinful...... there can be circumstances where it's not somebody's fault to be overweighted, like in my case, not being able to move much....... and being bedridden....... but if it comes from constantly overeating, then I agree....... that is a sin......

As far as s3x is concerned, we would love to have a child, but God has wisely prevented that we have one...... should that mean that we can't enjoy marital relations? I think that's wrong..... God has also intended this to be pleasurable for both sides, and not only for procreating......

Does your friend, by chance, have some issues with food?

I don't think that eating a cookie is really considered gluttony. I mean, carnal perhaps, but even that is stretching it. I mean, God created us with taste buds and stomachs, and He created these pleasure centers in our brains to enjoy eating....if eating wasn't pleasurable, then we'd probably starve to death.

The same with sex...I mean, if we didn't have a sex drive, we wouldn't carry out His commandment to be frutiful, and multiply.

Our bodies need food, and who doesn't enjoy eating? I think it's silly to say that indulging in foods you like is gluttony.

LOL...I think it's drunkenness. Remember, when Jesus said that the Pharisees were accusing Him of gluttony and winebibbing?!

11 cookies gluttony? That must make me a super-glutton then. I can polish off a whole bag of soft batch chocolate chips in one sitting.

I don't believe that is gluttony....... overeating is that you eat so much that your belly hurts from eating....... with all the lovely consequences of that (gaining weight and nausea for instance).......

Really? Because I'm thinking about it, and it seems to me like eating a whole bag in one sitting might just be gluttony. That would be like my eating a whole bag of Chips Ahoy...You know how they come in those bags with the 2-sided trays?

Isn't gluttony pretty much eating too much of something at one sitting...like at Thanksgiving, when you've already eaten 2 platefuls, but you go for that piece of pecan pie anyhow?

Is occasional gluttony okay, or are we talking habitual?

According to my dictionary gluttony is excessive desire for or consumption of food or drink....... I do not believe if you overeat once or twice a month that's gluttony...... you have to do it at least once or twice a week........

I have seen those programs on tv about that dietician that came to a house of someone and helped them to lose weight and eat more healthy...... forgot the name of that program....... and they would put out on a table what they would eat in a day or a week..... now THAT was an example of gluttony......

"do not eat more than ten, or thou shalt get pain deep within" i think it's near the midlle of the OT.

haha naw, it's not. but i do love eating cookies, not to the point of gluttony though. i save those times for burgers.

seriously though, i don't think it's good to eat till the point of pain. i think romans 12 implies more than it says....living sacrifice, to me, says everything i do is for God. <---that period is there to say-i mean it!

eating, talking, working, tv, reading, drawing etc....

    yupers!
