Thread: who here keeps the Sabbath Day?

  1. #1

who here keeps the Sabbath Day?

i've done it a few of the saturdays since january, but am VERY uneducated as to whether i should, and if so, what the restrictions are in order to keep it properly.

does anyone here sit on the fence as well? im not sure if its required of me, or if when i dont rest that day, am i sinning and not keeping a commandment?

some say its a covenant between God and israel and others say its for all people.

conflictions occur (to me) when i refer to doctrine because the verses suggest BOTH.

opinion AND personal feedback is much welcomed

Read Romans 14. I think this may give you some good insight.

"5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord."

    Hope this helps.

hmm...somewhat. i generally study the Bible, pray, and keep my thoughts Holy on the Sabbath, but theres lots of shades of grey, like if someone goes out of their way to bring home subway for you unexpectedly, or if pops is trying to move a couch and you are clearly the only person there to help...or a test on monday, and sunday you work, so saturday is the only day to catch up on material..etc.

what does one do in these situations? im more than thrilled to keep that as a bonding day, but i dont know whether situations like that spoil the entire purpose?

number 1 problem is if virtually everyone around you see's this as extreme and make it very difficult to prosper with it consistently. know what im saying?

I hear you. I guess the best example we have is Jesus himself. Think of the times he would heal someone on a Sabbath and the Pharisees would go nuts. They observed it for the shear religiousness of it. He told them clearly the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So I guess if Jesus worked on the Sabbath, we should be ok too.

Each and every day is my Sabbath day as I rest in the completed and finished work of Jesus. Each and every day I give thanks to Him for the sacrifice He made and the love He so graphically displayed.
    Hebrews 4
10 - For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

Sunday is the Lords Day as that is the day He rose, the first day of the week. It isn't so much a day of rest for me as a day of celebration.

Rest for the body and mind? Whatever day I can get it. And that's usually when I spend time dwelling on all the wonderful things the Lord has done - not just for me but generally.

I'm sure you'll get a variety of answers with your question, just thought I would offer mine as well.

This is something that I would recommend that you do some indepth study in. Keeping the sabbath is an important issue to dwell on. Especially if you have not in the past. Christians differ here on this issue. But if you notice when the Lord talks about the ten commandments it is one of those commands that He goes indepth on as opposed to something obvious like "thou shall not murder".

I find that interesting considering how many people violate this or are confused about this commandment

exactly. its important to me that i do the right thing as a born-again christian. just when i think ive figured out the sabbath confusion, im ready to pounce and take action, but then i step back and scratch my head haha. its a big deal to me.

wasnt it john who said that if we keep all commandments, except for one that we have erred in all, and are liars...and the truth is not in us?

maybe im getting ahead of myself, but thats that quote i always go back to, and then i begin to feel guilty of the issue...

Well i think as we grow closer to christ, are sanctified and more conformed to his image we desire to keep his commandments. At that point its not out of obligation. As if we say "Ok which of these do i have to watch out for and where can my Christian liberty allow me some freedom?"

Joh 14:15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
I think thats what makes this verse possible in our life. Out of love for God we seek to please Him. Not based on the idea that the works merit us anything but because we say "Hey this is what Our Father expects." and even though we may fall short or fail in certain areas we keep trying because we love Him.

Well i was going to comment on the 10 commandments but as i was searching I came across another section on the sabbath which could be worth reading.

    Exodus 31:12
    Exodus 35:1

Deuteronomy 5:12-15 covers the sabbath in the 10 commandments. Take an overview of the 10 and take notice of what i was mentioning before. Two of the most common commandments that are looked over or broken are the ones He goes most indepth on.... images(8-10) and the Sabbath.

Basically when i was approaching this topic I had to acknowledge that there are two sides to the discussion. The threads i encountered were many. Infact this is a topic where you will find people commonly opposed and that seems to differ based on background/upbringing and denomination.

At that point I studied both sides and came to my conclusion. So take your time. Its a subject that comes up every so often in the bible and the Lord seemingly puts some importance on it. So with some study and much prayer I think you should find your answer

Being a Christian is not about "doing the right things." Being a Christian is about being the right kind of person. Doing right things naturally follows.

I try to rest in Christ every day. I don't specifically observe a "Day off" Each day, I start with prayer and Thanksgiving. On Sunday, I worship the Lord. I sometimes listen to worship music, while I'm cutting grass.
There are some days where I try to do absolutely nothing but reflect on God. I spend my day watching my faovrite Youtube sermons or reading and studying God's word.

    Blessings

My husband and I rest on the sabbath. What we do since we don't go to church is listen to a sermon or so, read from the scriptures, etc. We spend the day together sometimes with others sometimes not. We don't make it some legalistic day that must be observed just this way or that way. We have taken drives out into the desert to enjoy God's beauty. Or gone to visit friends and perhaps try and share God's word with others but we never make any hard and fast rules regarding what we do as long as we do things together and we are keeping the focus of the day on God, His Son and all the many blessings we have been given.

I take Saturdays usually as my rest day where I do as little as possible, no washing, cleaning, cooking, shopping.

Matthew 12: 1-14 talks about the disciples in the fields picking grain on the Sabbath and then Jesus healing a man on the Sabbath. The Pharisees accused the disciples of doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath and then asked Jesus if it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath. There you see His response to both. He does say that it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath, as in healing the man with the crippled hand.
I've never really studied this, so I can't say for sure. But, I do know that the commandments say to observe the Sabbath by keeping it holy and to not do any work. It says that the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord. So, I would say that we should observe the Sabbath.
