Thread: who here keeps the Sabbath Day?

  1. #16
THERE IS NO "Sabbath day" for the Christian.

The "Sabbath rest was a "type" of the rest from our works that we have in Jesus. Since he rose from the grave, JESUS is the "Christian Sabbath" and we rest CONTINUALLY in Him from our own filthy "works of righteousness".

The weekly "Sabbath day" (there were other "Sabbath days") starts at sundown Friday, and continues till sundown saturday. That was NEVER changed. SUnday was NEVER the "Sabbath" in any way whatsoever (although church traditions often did attach all sorts of silly superstitious restrictions to it).

Messianic groups and other "Sabbatarian" denominations make a big deal about it (there are even "Seventh day Baptists" that meet on Saturday - go figure).

But the answer is really quite simple - then the "gentile dogs" were included into the Church (house of Cornelius) the question became - do we make THESE folks (shudder) ascribe to Jewish customs, or not????
    [b]
    The answer was: Acts 15:

23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:
24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.
    28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

The Gentiles never did keep the "Sabbath", and this specifically absolves them from bothering with it.

And that just about covers it.

    When Is It?

Since our calendar has been changed in the last several thousand years we have no idea which day is the Sabbath. So one has no idea if he is really "keeping the Sabbath".

While we don't use the same calendar as in the OT for our dates now, the Jews have been keeping the Sabbath since the command, so we know which is the 7th day.

happy Sabbath everyone! my mission today is to absorb the book of proverbs, and maybe have some watermelon on the porch. its awesome outside...and from the feedback i read, it should not be some rule, held to us like the other laws like dont kill, dont steal, etc. im going to take it and celebrate the sabbath as often as i could, but the key is not to make it seem like it keeps one in bondage, because God doesnt want vain worship. nor would i offend our Father in that way.

as for tomorrow, i go into indiana (im in illinois) to bring home fireworks.

Christ fulfilled the law, so we don't need to observe it. But think about how much time we spend doing everything but worshipping Christ. Should we not devote some time to God?

Have a great celebration Sabbath CB!

I still don't understand how we don't have to observe the sabbath when Jesus said to obey the commanments.

The Sabbath is a day of rest, but what do you call R&R. Wether your doing the gardening, reading a book, cross stitching. If it relaxes you are you obey the Sabbath? I have always believed it to be more of a day of from you normal week of work. Wasn't it Moses who stood up and said that slaves need a day off for rest anyway? I also believe this is needed simply because no man woman or child could possibly work 7 days a week for there entire life. Madness will take its course.

Acts 13:42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.

    Yep, I keep the Sabbath.
It's the best day of the week. Has 6000 years of history behind it, just like marriage. Instituted before sin, it therefore has no taint of the fall upon it. It's God's day. Not mine, not anyone else's, but His. And just like marriage, it's best the way it was designed in it's original form. A day that is holy, sanctified, and a day of appointment with your Maker. A day to remember, a day for blessing.

And like you say, not a day of bondage, but of freedom. Freedom from the constraints of menial labour and worldly pursuits. Freedom from man's traditions and mores. Just like a good marriage, a reminder of Eden.

A day of thanksgiving not just for creation, but for recreation in redemption. For He Who created also redeemed.

Re 14:6 ¶ And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Worshiping our Creator is an integral part of the everlasting gospel. What better day than to do this than on the day He set aside for that very purpose? The day He said we should never forget.

    God bless.
Jeremiah 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and
rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

Unimportant. It's NOT a "Day" anymore, but a person IN WHOM we rest from our "works".

Oh - and it's RIGHT NOW!!!!! - and tomorrow, and it was yesterday. SInce Jesus rose from the dead, it's always the "Sabbath".

I think that all depends on whether you view Christianity as an extension of Judaism or as its own animal.

I tend to think that the New Covenant is a better covenant, a new thing, built on a Person, whose name is Jesus, and not a bunch of "dos and don'ts" and "let's keep this law but not that law and I really can't tell you which exactly, or why."

Jesus is my Sabbath rest. I have ceased from my own works to obtain righteousness with, because He is my righteousness. I've entered into His rest and it is good, good, good.

You will find varying opinions here, obviously, but here is mine, enjoy.

I don't think i'll ever understand this Sabbath thing, Jesus said to obey the commandments and we are not suppose to work on the 7th day of the week. Then I hear that it is ok to work.

Its nice taking a break which is part of the reason we are commanded to follow the sabbath and to make it a day of fellowship with the Lord. It looks like you figured it out, that it is not to be held like a law, but for your sake and for the honor of the Lord because you love him. You said on your first post is it just for Isreal to follow and yes it is, but not how we understand it. We see Isreal as a people overseas, but if you look at what Isreal means it is anyone who wrestles with the Lord or is given power by the Lord. So, by its true meaning we are Isreal. See the law was fulfilled, but as Yeshua said its not abolished. So, we follow in honor and respect of the Lord because we want to and love him and no longer out of the curse of the law (if we dont he kills us). the word became flesh and tabernacled with us, in this way showing us how to observe and be a child of the Lord.

    Every day is my Sabbath

I agree with others who have stated that everyday is my Sabbath, since Jesus is my Sabbath, He is my rest. Hebrews 4.
