Gun tests mag did a test on personal defense ammo. They take no advertising so they have no conflict. They stated #1 load was federals 124 or 130 gr hollow points. Penetrated the best, expanded the best & was their top choice by far over all the rest. Speed + wt is the key. You need a good balance of both to be effective & the 357 has the best of both worlds.

...There was once a book written by a deputy sheriff and a SWAT team leader called, Handgun Stopping Power, that used a combination of anecdotal and lab data to formulate the best combat loads. Because if the lab data cannot produce predictable results in the field then the lab was useless.

Interestingly, the 357mag ranked highest in one shot stops with the 125 grain bullet at 97 percent.

You still can (as long as you are careful how short you cut the barrel) but it may get stolen....

Come to think of it there may be a reason theft started being a problem when folks quick having the guns visible

You got that right. & like I said before load it #5 or 6 bird shot & it is one safe but effective load not matter if aiming for the head or chest & won't go through most avg walls) I use 3.5 inch magnums in mine. Course like I said I conceal carry a 2" 357 Taurus Titanium 7 shot revolver, and for night I also have a 45acp with a Burris laser & light attached to rail so I can ID my target before firing.

Ha but I also keep a 40 S&W in my office.

#4 buck is the "preferred" load for using when you want maximum destruction with minimum penetration.

Black Hills and Cor Bon are top dog for defensive rounds. Federal is not bad, but its not Cor Bon.

If I remember correctly, the 10mm auto and the 41 mag have the best stopping numbers of any round ever somehwat commonly used in law enforcement. Unfortunately their "high recoil" led to both having a very short life in L.E. work. The 40 is no replacemet for the 10mm. The velocity loss needed for the recoil reduction dramatically affected the penetration of the bullet.

i wish L.E. would go to the .45. I love the round and if you get the right gun you'll have a comparable number or rounds in the chamber. My dept recently switched over to the Glock 22 about a year ago and I love the gun but wish we could have went to a .45. All in all I don't get to make the decision so I'm just happy they give us a gun...
