    Do other Gods exist?

    When I read in the Bible things like
    For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. { psalms 135}

    Does this mean other Gods do exist and that God is more powerful than them? Or as I thought no other Gods exist.

    This is not the only line in the bible which hints that other Gods do exist.
    So are there other Gods or is he the only God?
    Thought I had this crack now I'm confused again.

    Thanks.

    Well they are not gods in the sense that they exist, see the lower case g, but that people put them up as gods. God is more powerful than anything we can put in front of Him.

    They exists purely in the minds of unbelievers. Objectively no other gods exist in the Cosmos, but obviously many people believe that they do. So, when you read a passage like this it is largely pointing to that idea, "The other gods which you think exist and which you worship rather than the one true God..." This is the idea.

    Now, one little note also, Satan and his demons - I would suggest - are the source for many false gods. If a worshiper of Baal for example in the Old Testament was actually able to make some kind of small scale "miracle" occur, this is not proof of a pantheon of Gods (many gods) this may be evidence of the work of Satan in the world; the father of lies!

    Good question. Blessings!

    Other Gods do not exist, but other gods do exist. Other gods can be numerous. Most any god historically worshipped by any group of people is indirectly worshiping "the god of this earth" who is Satan. Money, family, sports, our job etc. etc. can all be "gods."

    They most definitely exist. Satan is "the god of this earth."

    Here is a good story from the Bible about the "difference" in the One True "Living"God and a god that people choose to serve. There is but One! I hope this helps...

    1 Kings 18-
    23Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
    24And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
    25And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
    26And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
    27And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
    28And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
    29And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
    30And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.
    31And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
    32And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
    33And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
    34And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
    35And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
    36And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
    37Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
    38Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
    39And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, He is the God.
    .................The message of the cross divides the human race." ~MW~

    ........ ... " LORD, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant..."
    .................................................. .................................................. ...Nehemiah 1:11a

    If other gods existed, then God would be a liar, because He already stated that He didn't know of any and there were none above Him or like Him:

    Deuteronomy 4:35
    To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.

    Isaiah 45:5-6
    5 I am the LORD, and there is no other;
    There is no God besides Me.
    I will gird you, though you have not known Me,
    6 That they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting
    That there is none besides Me.
    I am the LORD, and there is no other;
    7 I form the light and create darkness,
    I make peace and create calamity;
    I, the LORD, do all these things.

    What that Psalm means is that God is God and that He is high above what people commonly worship as "gods" (which we know aren't gods, but demons and wicked principalities).

    I love the previous chapter in Isaiah: Chapter 44:

    6 "This is what the LORD says—
    Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty:
    I am the first and I am the last;
    apart from me there is no God.
    7 Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it.
    Let him declare and lay out before me

    what has happened since I established my ancient people,
    and what is yet to come—
    yes, let him foretell what will come.

    8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid.
    Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago?
    You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me?
    No, there is no other Rock; I know not one."

    9 All who make idols are nothing,
    and the things they treasure are worthless.
    Those who would speak up for them are blind;
    they are ignorant, to their own shame.

    10 Who shapes a god and casts an idol,
    which can profit him nothing?

    Good post. This is a great passage to clarify this issue, indeed. There is no other god but GOD, though this reality does little to keep so many from the worship of all manner of false gods!

    The LORD said

    In Isaiah 45:5a "I am the LORD, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me."

    Now there are plenty of false gods set up by Satan.

    He is a god because he fits the definiton of a "god" and the scripture calls him "..god.."

    I totally get the point. I addressed it in my first post.
