And, while I'm sure this will be considered irrelevant, take into note...

... "hydrometeorological" data-collecting devices have only increased in accuracy in the last hundred years. Not to mention the amount of industrialization resulting in mass amounts of smog. I have noticed that Christians (speaking in generalities) seem to be, unfortunately, less likely to be "environmental" because of an excuse that "God is in charge". God being in charge doesn't excuse us from knowingly polluting his creation, both land, sea, and air.

... "geological" data-collecting devices, against, have only increased in their ability to sense "natural disasters" over the last century.

... "biological", once again, depends both on the sextupling of the world population in the last hundred years, the fact that more and more people live in more localized places (dense cities/communities as opposed to spread far and wide).

There is a perfectly "reasonable" explanation for all of the data in the chart... though I doubt that will convince anyone from leaping to the conclusion that "We must be in the end-times because of this data!"

My understanding this is not counting recordings of events on some instrument but of natural disasters resulting in the loss of life and property.

Number of people reported killed by type of disaster and level of development 1991 - 2005

Well, look what I found... Really brings Matthew 24 home, seeing it happening live like this.
This map shows natural disasters and emergencies as they transpire.

This map shows where there are outbreaks of disease and threats of pandemics.

This map shows us "wars and rumours of wars."

Wow, we've got the world into a bit of a mess, haven't we?
Please could everyone pray for Mieke and Charles.

The declaration of disasters tends to be a political issue as well. I am not really familiar with the details US matters, but it seems that if a disaster is declared, it opens up federal/state funding for those affected. With higher populations, adverse meteorological, geological and biological-related events will impact on greater amounts of people. This isn't the end-all, be-all but I believe it needs to be considered when throwing out data to support an increase in "disasters".

What is really needed is the actual event data.
It is only the cynic who claims “to speak the truth” at all times and in all places to all men in the same way, but who, in fact, displays nothing but a lifeless image of the truth… He dons the halo of the fanatical devotee of truth who can make no allowance for human weaknesses; but, in fact, he is destroying the living truth between men. He wounds shame, desecrates mystery, breaks confidence, betrays the community in which he lives, and laughs arrogantly at the devastation he has wrought and at the human weakness which “cannot bear the truth”. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in Ethics.
