Food for thought - the church.

Do you think that the church is too separatists ; arn't we just having our own party while we wait to board that space ship called "that great getting up morning" (the rapture) and hang the world (lost souls). I mean we are happy to hear of people added to the Kingdom, but we are too busy caught up fellowshipping and praising to go intermingle with filthy sinners. I am not pointing fingers, I am certainly guilty myself.

I have struggled with this idea for most of my Christian life. I'm not pre-trib rapture dispensationalist, but I guess my worldview is quite similar. We need to focus on the importance of the purity and joy of united fellowship with like-minded believers, avoiding both worldliness and false teaching - but at the same time we SHOULD be VERY concerned about the world around us, which is going to Hell unless they turn to Christ.

We are called to be separate from the godless world around us, but not to withdraw from it - we are to be salt and light - shining as stars in a wocked and perverse generation - in the world, but not of it. Most Christians, emphasise one part of that phrase to the exclusion of the other - as with most things, finding the balance is the challenge...

The fields are white unto harvest but I think that we Canadians have become too sensitive and soft. Speaking generally, we're hurt too easily when someone slams the door on us when we're out door-knocking or if someone calls us "Bible-thumpers" or "Jesus freaks." So rather than get our feelings hurt, we just stay home.

Or, very few people that we've invited actually come out to VBS or Friend Day so we figure, "what's the point" and give up.

Or we're just too busy to give our time to try to reach the perishing....

I know this isn't what you're saying, but from my perspective....

Not out in the world witnessing enough, and the church is accused of being insular and self centered. Not separated from the wold enough, and the church is accused of being a whore and "worldly". The Church never seems good enough for its own members... but luckily, for people like my lost and seeking landlord, it still shines like a beacon in the dark.

Why does it shine like a beacon in the dark?

Because there's people out there who are doing their best for the Kingdom. There's people who, while not being perfect, don't compromise on their sin. If they ain't clean, then they're busy cleaning. There's people out there who make folks like my landlord say "Gosh, I wonder what's different about that person". And then there's people who will go up to those, like my landlord, and tell them what they've been searching for, without fear of consequence.

The sum of these people is the Church. It is alive and well. The church is not dead, nor castrated, despite the number amongst its body who wish it were so.

I know quite a few people who are as you've described; very unfortunate. I also know quite a few people who are the opposite (myself included). Eh, what can you do; stay inside your fort of a church and you're holier than thou. Go out into the world and you're a drunkard.

I don't see it this way totally. What is the purpose of our local body of believers? Is it not to fellowship, worship, praise, be taught and equipped to go out into the world sharing the Gospel? If we never get past the fellowship point then we are not being obedient to what Jesus commissioned us to do.
Come unto me all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
