    Ruth study (part 2)

    Chapter Two
    The Loving Duty
    Ruth 1:6-15
Naomi was a devoted woman. She remained with a husband that didn't honor her faith, a man that consistently made lousy choices for their family. Elimelech in essence plunged his wife and sons into a life surrounded by depravity.

The Moabites were an idolatrous, superstitious, self satisfied and proud people. They were also wealthy, which is what drew Elimelech's full attention. (1 Kings 11:7, Jer. 27:3,9, Jer. 48:11, Jer. 48:29)

Yet Naomi did not forget God.

Naomi suffered the consequences of her husband's choices, just as others' sins affect us and our sins affect others. It is only with closed eyes and heart that we can believe our sins only affect ourselves.

In her deepest grief Naomi arose with a single hope: to return to the land of her people, to be near them again and to surround herself with those that loved God. Naomi had continued to live her faith while in Moab. She had taught her daughters-in-law about the living God of Israel. And her daughters-in-law held her in high esteem. They loved her.

When Naomi left Moab both of the young women went with her, as was the custom of the day. When a young woman married she became more a part of her husband's family than her own. They were bound to this woman in love and in duty. Naomi allowed the girls to travel out of the city with her, to feel some of the pinch of leaving what they held dear, what was familiar to them.

Then Naomi instructed them both to turn back. Naomi was returning to Judah with the hope of finding mercy but she offered no hope of an easy life to Ruth or Orpah.

Naomi 'freed' them from their duty to her, and prayed for them that the Lord would bless them with husbands and rest in Moab. Still they persisted.

'Surely we will return with you to your people!'
So Naomi turned up the heat. She told them in no uncertain terms what they could expect--laying it out loud and clear. Turn back or face living the rest of your lives alone, without the comforts and identities that the rest of the world enjoys. Without security, without hope, without companionship... you are Moabites! Go home to your families and your own gods!

Wow! Is Naomi actually encouraging them to go back? To turn away from the True and Living God?

In Luke 9:23 Jesus tells us:
"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me."Luke 9:57-62 says:
Now it happened as they journeyed on the road that someone said to Him, "Lord, I will follow You wherever You go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." Then He said to another. "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God."
And another also said, "Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house." But Jesus said to him, "No one having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
    In Luke 14:26-35 Jesus says:
"If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it...lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'
Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.
So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
Salt is good; but if the salt has lost it's flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"

Naomi was instructing these devoted young women to count the cost, just as the Lord instructs us. This isn't about following a good cause or knowing what's right and doing it from a sense of duty only. That sense of duty is not enough to carry us through.

Ruth 1:14 “Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.”

Orpah in the end was not willing to step out and leave the familiar. She counted the cost and it was too great. Her devotion to Naomi only went so far.

What is the Lord asking of you? Are there difficulties that He has brought into your life? All of us come face to face with obstacles that have the potential to make us want to shrink back from following Him. The big question is, will you kiss Him and turn away? Or will you cling to Him?

We must seek Him first with all our hearts. The more we know Him the more we love Him. Love alone has the power to keep us from turning back.

Love alone will keep us moving forward. Love alone will enable us to walk through the hard things and in the end to stand and say that God is good.

Daily I come to Him, to remember Him, to love Him. This is the One I love. The One that created me, that came to earth to show me the way. The One that took my sins to the cross for me and rose again calling my name. The One that suffered in my place and wrote my name in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Is there more He must do for us to win our love? Must He make our lives easy? Filled with creature comforts? Health? Money? Relationships of our choosing? Make our lives free of conflict; fulfill what we think is best?

Cinderella is a universally known story. We love it! The neglected, misused servant girl taking her rightful place as a princess. It's our story. This world is something like the mean stepmother's house after all. The problem is we all want Heaven on earth... NOW. We want to be princesses instead of servants. Of course, we picture ourselves as kindly princesses that would bestow kind words and deeds upon the poor lost souls that got near enough to get our attention. But to actually serve? And not only serve, but to be ridiculed and belittled while we do so?

Sounds a lot like Jesus doesn't it? He served, while they mocked him. He loved while they ripped His body with a cat-o-nine-tails. He prayed for them while His heart was breaking.

Count the cost. We are not of this world and God is not a fairy godmother, waiting at our beck and call to fix all our woes.

Cling to Him. He understands our sorrows. Cling to Him. He walked the same road. Cling to Him and He will refine you as you go through the fire. He is trustworthy and faithful.

Orpah turned back. She has a few verses with her name and is a lasting example to us of what self-love looks like. Ruth clung to Naomi; left all that was familiar and ended up with a whole book written about her. Not only that, God grafted her into the lineage of Christ! And it was all for love.

Lord, we thank You that You have loved us with an everlasting love. A love that we cannot comprehend. Make us strong. Show us Yourself and stir our hearts up in love. Help each one of us to lay aside all and follow You. Help us to never shrink back from the things You call us to, but to persevere daily. Make us like You Lord.
    In Jesus name we come.
    Amen #

Wow, Kayte. Talk about self-examination! I am going to meditate on this and pray on this and then I might have a response or the response may be my personal growth.
Come unto me all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

You should have warned us that this is a "deep" study.

    1) What is the Lord asking of you? Are there difficulties that He has brought into your life?
I actualy answered this question this morning when I posted my testimony. http://bibleforums.org/showthread.php?t=17560

    2) What obstacles have the potential to make you want to shrink back from following Him? My past, when people judge me without knowing me, people in the church being hurtful
How have you overcome them? Prayer, Prayer, Prayer. We have to want to have a heart of God and we have to want to change. I struggle with overcoming my fear of rejection from Christians. This is one of my major battles.

    3) What cost is there for you as the Lord's disciple? Cost of harmony with my spouse (He is a future Christian.) is only one I can think of at this momen.

    4) We must seek Him first. How do you do this in your daily life? Prayer. I need to be discipline in reading and praying. This is my weakest link.

    5) As Ruth had Naomi to guide and help her, do you have someone to whom you are accountable? Yes!

    6) In what ways do you serve the Lord? Have you found joy in this service? Yet another area where I am struggling. I don't know where I should serve right now. I am waiting for an answer on this one.

    Study Questions:

    1) What is the Lord asking of you? Are there difficulties that He has brought into your life?
I have met many difficulties on my way. One of the greatest has been my health. I have never been healthy and it led to being disabled and bedridden for the last 6 years. I had some trouble overcoming that....... but God has been very good to me since I accepted and realised I still could use my life to serve Him. Another difficulties was to come out of my abusive marriage with a man that would leave no opportunity to offend God. I was afraid to end it, afraid to be alone. In my case it would mean a nursinghome and I was really scared that would happen...... and again God blessed me by sending Chal my way. That gave me courage enough to go through with the divorce and to finally start to share my life with a Christian man.

    2) What obstacles have the potential to make you want to shrink back from following Him? How have you overcome them?
Again that would be my health. I have overcome them with lots of prayer and I learned to submit to God in every way.

    3) What cost is there for you as the Lord's disciple?
I am the only one in my family that believes in God. My parents left their belief cause they cannot understand that God would not heal His Child when that child wants to do everything to please Him. I have tried to explain it to them time and time again and it still grieves me they don't understand...... Also the loss of more and more health is not easy..... but I try to be an example of encouragement, who keeps on glorifying God no matter how ill I am becoming.....

    4) We must seek Him first. How do you do this in your daily life?My life is in service of God. I want to please Him more than anything. I told Chal that I loved him, but that I loved God before him.... and I feel very blessed knowing that Chal feels the same about me. We pray before any decision and God answers me and gives me answers how He wants me to live and I try with everything I have to obey Him. Not too long ago I wanted to go to a doctor that might take away some pain and in a dream God told me not to do that. It took some stride, but in the end I did not go.... even though a little painrelief would be really very welcome. After this God started to lift me from pain from time to time.... so I do not need that doctor anymore now. But I had to obey Him first before He started to do that.

    5) As Ruth had Naomi to guide and help her, do you have someone to whom you are accountable?
Yes, I am accountable to Chal. He is very wise, a bit older than me and I learn a lot from him. He teaches me about the Bible and teaches me how to live a better life, how to dedicate myself better to God and how to become a better person.

    6) In what ways do you serve the Lord? Have you found joy in this serviceBeing bedridden there are not many ways I can serve God. There are two ways though. The first one is witnessing and I do that with great pleasure. I feel God's Presence clearly whenever I do that.
The second way is being a moderator here. It gives meaning to my life and I feel very blessed that I can serve God this way. I try to encourage my brothers and sisters here, and show them that even in bad situations there is still a reason to be grateful. Even though my health goes downhill I will never stop glorifying God, and the day I will die I will do that praising God on my way to Heaven. I feel very blessed with fellowship here, since I cannot go to church, maybe twice a year if I am lucky. This site gave meaning back to my life.

    Love you,
    Mieke
I would rather be dead than spend one second without Daddy!

Glory to the Lord our God
Glory to the Lamb on the throne
We open wide the gates of our hearts
With our lips we rise up and pray
as we worship the Ancient of Days

Momof5.. your response brought tears to my eyes (okay, tears are coming easily for me right now) but that God might use me in some way for anothers personal growth.. it's a major hearts desire of mine. Thank you.

HGV: 6) In what ways do you serve the Lord? Have you found joy in this service? Yet another area where I am struggling. I don't know where I should serve right now. I am waiting for an answer on this one.
You my dear one are serving Him more than you know. You serve Him here on this message board. I've seen you enourage and comfort others many times. And from posts you've made, I know you are serving Him in your love and devotion to your family. Am I remembering correctly that you serve Him by helping with clean up at church, too?
Just because these seem 'day to day' regular things that we should all be doing doesn't mean that they aren't of great import to the Lord.

We can read about Ruth going out to glean in the fields to help Naomi.. this was ministry! Our fields have just been redefined.. the grocery store.

    Study Questions:

    1) What is the Lord asking of you? Are there difficulties that He has brought into your life?

There have been so many struggles in my life, that I can't just pin point one. But I think the culmination, the thing that brought me back to God, was when I was in the deepest pit of sin. When I finally cried out to God, He rescued me. I believe what the Lord is asking of me at this point in my life is just focus on Him, love Him with all my heart and soul, and be His faithful child. I have so much to be thankful for that I just want to serve Him in any way that He chooses.

    2) What obstacles have the potential to make you want to shrink back from following Him? How have you overcome them?

I am still working on this one, I have a real hard time talking to people I don't know. But I can't be a true witness for Him unless I do. It's amazing, I can (and do) have a really big mouth when I am around people who I know well, but when I am around strangers I clam up and shrink against the wall. I need to use my big mouth for God.
    3) What cost is there for you as the Lord's disciple?

Well, since I came back to God 2 years ago, I haven't seen any cost, I have shed the evil things that once ruled my life, (still working on some things), but I have gained so much by being a disciple of the Lord. I have gained peace, strength to face things that I could not face on my own, assurance of God's love for me, assurace that He will never abandon or forsake me. There are so many things I have gained that it is an impossibility to list them all.

    4) We must seek Him first. How do you do this in your daily life?

I do pray every day consitently, but as HGV said, I too need more discipline in the area of bible reading and studying, sometimes the business in my life overtakes me. I definately need to place God as first priority in my life.

    5) As Ruth had Naomi to guide and help her, do you have someone to whom you are accountable?

Only my husband, but even though He is too a Christian, He is still not a strong spiritual leader in my home. We do however talk together about things we are both struggling with. We do not pray together, as I wish we would, but we do pray for each other.

    6) In what ways do you serve the Lord? Have you found joy in this service

I try to help people when I can, whether to give them comfort, encouragement or advice. I also help at the church when I can. I have made hoagies, served food, greeted, and I will be weeding the flower beds at church. I haven't found my niche quite yet, but I show my love the best by acts of service.
I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I want to be. I am not what I hope to be. But still, I am not what I used to be. And by the grace of God, I am what I am.

    Study Questions:

    1) What is the Lord asking of you? Are there difficulties that He has brought into your life?
The Lord is asking me to trust Him.. deeper and deeper. This last week has been nothing but difficulties.. *weak laugh* My son being injured was/is the worst. The rest just pain in the rear financial stuff. So much of my heart trusts in the Lord.. but there are indeed little pieces that fly up and declare Him unsafe. (God refuses to live in any box I've yet to design.) I want so desparately to twist His arm sometimes and have Him do things my way. (Esspecially things like keeping my kids safe.) But, even this, I must bow down, let go and trust Him.

    2) What obstacles have the potential to make you want to shrink back from following Him? How have you overcome them?
I don't have anything that's causing me to want to shrink back at this point. If I didn't follow Him.. where would go?

    3) What cost is there for you as the Lord's disciple?
All has been gain. Those things I lost were but rubbish. Being a slave to sin is nothing I'd ever want back!
I did lose friends when I gave my life to Jesus.. but they didn't lose me as a friend.. I still pray for them.

    4) We must seek Him first. How do you do this in your daily life?
Spending time in prayer and in studying His word, seeking to apply it and live it.

    5) As Ruth had Naomi to guide and help her, do you have someone to whom you are accountable?
I have a few people that I'm accountable to. Mainly my husband.. he knows me better than anyone else. He knows my struggles and my strengths.. my weaknesses and my joys... and he shares them with me and encourages me. And if I'm slipping into dangerous ground.. he gently reminds me of where I need to be.

    6) In what ways do you serve the Lord? Have you found joy in this service?
Prayer has been the primary way He's used me over the years. Generally it has been a joy.. but there have been times that it did cause me to want to shrink back. (Intercession can really take a lot out of you.. and sometimes, the way the Lord has one pray, isn't how we would chose to pray.)
My ministry to my family would be next. Then I guess sharing the things He's taught me with others. (like this study... doing bible studies is a great joy to me.)
We also had a family (a mom and her 2 girls) living with us last year.. it was supposed to be for 6 months, but turned into just over a year. It was a joy in many ways.. but it sure pointed out the spots where I'm selfish! We live in a fairly small house and our family never yells or argues. It was difficult to have 6 people living in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath house.. 3 of whom did fight and yell.
I'm a person that needs space and enjoys alone time. I found myself getting angry because I was denied that for so long. Anger can sure zap ones joy in service! And when I'm serving angrily and selfishly... it's not really service.

Just stick an under construction sign on my head.

I thought I'd just add on a bit about Naomi in this section.
The story states that naomi 'heard that the Lord had visited His people and that there was food in the land'.. so it's entirely concievable to think that she was still 'earthly' minded and only returned to Bethlehem for material gain.

It's hard to tell exactly where her mind and heart were at that point. I see that if that was the case, the Lord's mercy is just soooo evident.

Did He 'send Naomi word that the famine was over' in order to draw her back to Bethlehem.. so that Ruth would be transplanted to the right place so she could be grafted in?

I just think it's a neat illustration of how God will use the ordinary to draw us and change us.

I think Naomi may have been testing the two women's dedication.

What is the Lord asking of me?

He is asking me to submit fully, loving Him and trusting Him completely to provide in good times and rough times.

What obstacles have the potential to make me want to shrink back from following Him. How have I overcome them?

I sometimes get totally physically exhausted but He always gives me rest! One obstacle has been my situation with one of my children. Also, there have been occasional squabbles within some church members or comments made to me, but I remember we are a FAMILY and like any family, there will be squabbles. We overcome them by focusing back on Jesus and not on each other.

What cost is there for me as the Lord's disciple?

Sometimes we are so busy that I feel exhaustion, but I can never repay the debt I owe!!!

Seeking Him first. How do I do this in my daily life?

I pray and study daily. I try to live according to what the Bible teaches. I am always using life situations to teach my children about God and that usually teaches me as well.

Do you have someone to whom you are accountable?

I am accountable to God (even more so, I feel, since I am a teacher), to my husband and my children, to the children I teach, to my Sunday School director, to my pastor and deacons, to our ladies mission group, to our prayer cell.

In what ways do I serve the Lord? Have I found joy in this service?

The Lord called me to teach 3rd & 4th grade Sunday School and every year I teach 3rd & 4th grade Vacation Bible School. He also called me to direct the Youth & Children's Choir, to teach them music and singing and doing it as an offering to the Lord (He even calls me to sing an occasional special song in our church services although I prefer not to be up in front of people). Our choir has expanded to include drama as well. I have found such joy in this service and I just cry tears of joy when any of our children or youth come to the Lord in repentance and salvation! I have a special mission to work in our food pantry and clothing closet to meet special needs that people may have in the community.
Come unto me all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

I think it is very possible that Naomi was testing Ruth and Orpah.. maybe testing is the wrong word.
When I have led others to Jesus, I did 'warn' them to count the cost. That this isn't a decision to be made lightly or purely emotionally.. but is a decision that will indeed change their lives. Of course we can't know in advance what all those changes will be.. but the one thing we should know is that we're no longer 'captian of our own ship'. That we now have a Savior AND Lord.

As I prayed about the study of Ruth, the Lord began showing me how the entire gospel is laid out in Ruth. From the fall (Elimelech), to the Law given to Israel (Naomi representing Israel), to the kinsman redeemer (Boaz), to the church (Ruth). (I'm giving away future studies! hehehehe) So in that sense, yes, I see Naomi not trying to get rid of them or shooing them away because her own heart was wicked.. but pointing out that this isn't a decision to be made lightly.

I think the context supports this view because when Ruth makes her choice, Naomi is silent. She doesn't refuse to let Ruth continue on with her.. which she could have done if she really didn't want her.

I'm don't argue against the view that Naomi was actually trying to get rid of them.. that IS possible as well. That's just not where I was led in doing this study when I saw the gospel being laid out.

Another view on the book of Ruth http://www.ariel.org/ffruit.html
Fenris: "There are two ways to shoot an arrow into a bulls-eye You can shoot the arrow into the bulls-eye or you can shoot the arrow and paint the bulls-eye wherever it hits"

Romans 12:19 Don't seek revenge ... give place to God's wrath. For it is written "Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord"

    Isa. 30:32
And every blow of the rod of punishment, which the Lord will lay on him, will be with the music of tambourines and lyres; And in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight them

G_d was gracious He has shown favor

I agree with you, but I wasn't asking if she was trying to get rid of them, because I don't beleive that is the case.

I think she was testing their dedication, testing to see where their heart's actually were, testing their sincerity. Obviously Ruth's heart was in the right place, she was devoted to God and to Ruth, which I don't think we can say about Orphah, who turned away and went back to her home. I think Naomi wanted see where their longings truly laid and that is why she urged them so strongly to go home.
I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I want to be. I am not what I hope to be. But still, I am not what I used to be. And by the grace of God, I am what I am.

I sure meant to get back to this sooner! It's been a long month this week...

Thank you for continuing the Ruth stidy, I really enjoyed part one.

    1) What is the Lord asking of you? Are there difficulties that He has brought into your life? To be a mother and extend that out to a foster child as needed. To seek Him out more closely, to do spiritual warfare, to be a prayer warrior. Yes, the difficulties are, the devil sneaking his way into my husband heart, who no longer allows us to go to church. I pray everyday for God to let us go back to church, but I'm also seeing that in the abscense of fellowship, I've grown much closer to God and my prayer time/bible reading and studying time as quadrupled. maybe God wanted this to happen.

    2) What obstacles have the potential to make you want to shrink back from following Him? How have you overcome them? Fear of not having enough money to keep the house well stocked in food, fear of how spiritual warfare will backlash on my family, basicly fear, which is a sin. Overcame with prayer, growing to trust in the Lord, my faith has grown tremendously, God always provides when we do what He asks.

    3) What cost is there for you as the Lord's disciple? My marriage, everything.

    4) We must seek Him first. How do you do this in your daily life? Wake up and have time with God, listen to God when He gives messages, be aware for any time God is offering a way to serve, pray before making decisions about anything.

    5) As Ruth had Naomi to guide and help her, do you have someone to whom you are accountable? The children, and my husband.

    6) In what ways do you serve the Lord? Have you found joy in this service? I was in the church choir for two years, my husband asked me to quit. I taught Sunday School for two years, my husband asked me to quit. I taught VBS, same scenario. Now he refuses to even take us to church. In what ways do I serve the lord now? Homeschool my kids, teach them their bible studies, clean the house as if I was doing it for God, foster mom to a child when needed, cook for people who are healing up from a surgery or in mourning, pray for people, and spiritual warfare, dream interpretation. You just have to be ready for opputunities to serve God, so you don't miss them. Yes, there is a great reward in serving God, nothing like money or fame, its deep in the heart.
