To spend eternity in heaven with Jesus, Jesus is Eternal Life.
John 4:16 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
"Jesus said unto her, I am the Resurrection, and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he Live"(John 11:25)
Eternal Life is a condition that exists only in God Himself, i.e., "For as the Father hath Life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have Life in Himself"(John 5:26)
It means you will live forever
But, not only that...it speaks of quality of life that gets better and better and better.
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
John 17: 1-3
The "essence" of eternal life is knowing God, in an intimate, personal and ever-increasing loving way.
We will never stop learning about Him and our Heavenly Father in Heaven because God is boundless.
My signature sums it up. The more we see, learn of and experience God, the more we cannot help but love Him as He is such a beautiful being.
~ My testimony~
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son that the Son may glorify thee, since thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. I glorified thee on earth, having accomplished the work which thou gavest me to do; and now, Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made. I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and thou gavest them to me, and they have kept thy word. Now they know that everything that thou hast given me is from thee; for I have given them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from thee; and they have believed that thou didst send me." (John 17:1-8)
The answer Jesus gave concerning eternal life is here in John 17...That they may KNOW thee only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent.
Jesus does not have living forever in view here in John 17......but rather He ties eternal life to a relationship with the only true God and Jesus Christ.
